I've got some spare cash to blow and I've been wanting a Turbo Duo for the longest time. I was going to start shopping around for one until I found a Pioneer Laseractive with the Sega module at a thrift store last week. Now I'm thinking about getting the Turbo Grafx PAC-N1 module for the Laseractive instead of a Duo.

I don't know much about Duos or Laseractive systems, so I'm not sure of the advantages/disadvantages of each. I know the Laseractive has digital optical out, but I wouldn't be able to use that on my set-up anyway. They seem to be about the same price too, so I'm torn between which one to get. Any opinions?

BTW, does anyone here have a PAC-N1 or Duo they want to sell me? ;)

Not that you souldn't pick up the laseractive or anything, but I'd personally go with some form of Duo myself. It would be easier to mod if you were into getting imports hu-cards (or domestic if you get a Duo-r) and look nicer. Though now that I think of it, if you already have a TG and can find a cheap PAC-N1 then that would probably be your best bet.

I have both personally duo system is very nice to have. but yea true the N1 package is very RARE ! I had to pay $300 for mine BOXED and complete ... so I'd really say buy both if you can or buy em on at a different time...

Wait...you FOUND a Laseractive with the Sega module? Good thing I keep checking Goodwill for them, then! Great find.

I have no idea how well the Laseractive add-on works (or doesn't work as the case may or may not be), so I can't comment on that... but I have a Duo and I loooooove it. One of my favorite systems. Worth every penny if you ask me.

Well, I only wanted to get one or the other. Don't have the space in my gaming set-up to accommodate a Duo *and* a Laseractive. Seems kind of pointless to get both too since they basically do the same thing anyway.

I'm leaning more towards getting the PAC-N1. Does anyone know if you still need those System CD hu-cards when playing Duo games on the Laseractive, or are those just used with the Duo?

You do not need the Hu-Card for the Laseractive..it works like the Duo. I have a laseractive with all 3 pacs, and the 3D glasses (which own btw). The other big advantage to getting the Pac, is that you can play LaserActive Only games that use it.

BTW, I need a copy of 3D Museum for the LAseractive if anyone is selling one.

If the Laseractive add-on has 100% (or close) compatibility, I'd go with that. Actually, I don't know how the controller is... but the Laseractive is definitely rarer.

If there are games you can't play on it, then I'd get the Duo.

Duo R>LaserActive

That is all.

Modded Duo R > Laseractive

It costs less and the only thing you can't play is the small handful of the LaserDisc games.

If you do go the LaserActive route, make sure you are getting what you want:

PAC-N1 = Japanese Unit, can only play Jap Hu cards
PAC-N10 = US unit, can only play US Hu Cards

@twitami - there are actually 4 PACs

n1/n10 - pce/tg16
s1/s10 - md/genesis
k1 - karaoke
pc1 - PC interface

I have a nice Laseractive, the Sega module, and a boxed TG module that I'm about to sell off... hint hint... has the remote, too, which is also quite rare.

Im in da sema boat,, been looking for hte NEC pak but they are too expensive. I might just have to buy a Duo R, I didnt want another system, since I have the laseractive hooked up to the TV already. BTW where do I find modded Duos or who does the mods?,,

The Duo outputs native composite out. Why would you need it modded?

Perhaps he meant region mods.

Hit up D-Lite either here or on neo-geo. He probably has several modded units he can sell you.

Ahh, thanks for clearing that up Sisko. Wasn't sure about the compatibility issues of the different pac's. Think I'm going to go the Laseractive route instead of a Duo though. It's gonna cost more for both TurboGrafx packs but I'm going to save allot of space in my gaming set-up. The digital out is also nice to have in case I ever decide to upgrade my TV.

chadtower, I sent you a PM about your PAC-N10. ;)

Just remember that the CDs (and I'm pretty sure LDs) are region free. No sense shelling out that much more cash for something you may not need.
