What are some good 2D or pseudo-3D PS1 games in the line of shooters, beat em ups, stategy and platformers?

The original Tomba game is an exciting 2D platformer with beautiful sprite-based graphics. Not to mention it's alot of fun to play.
It's easy to spot when it's around. All you gotta do is look for the caveman-like dude with the pink hair.

Definitely, Tomba's a kick to play. You can also add Skullmonkeys and Klonoa to that list.

Klonoa Door to Phantomile, Medevil 1 and 2 are great adventure type games that you might wanna checkout. I also second the notion about the Tomba series. As for shooters, get Einhander, Raiden Project. Both are hard to find but they are worth it.

Medievil is great (I believe both 2 and 3 are on the original PSX; SCEA Cambridge, the developer, made a Ghost Hunter PS2 game recently that looks to be worth a shot), but it's very much a standard third person, early-ish 3D action game. Like Zelda: OoT, except without the connected world and it doesn't take many of its interesting ideas far enough, instead dropping them in favor of introducing twists and often uninteresting additions. Still a favorite game, but not one I've picked up since I beat it. The US release got screwed in terms of cheat codes, by the way - those were toally removed. :(

If you decide to import, then definitely go with Gradius Gaiden.

Just went through my small collection and pulled these games out as great titles.
Tenchu was and still is the best in the series. The AI is twice as better than the ones for the next gen.
Jersey Devil was also one of those great titles that was punished with a somewhat bad camera angles but still pretty decent.

I think Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the best 2d game on PS1.
Strider 2 is good but I prefer the original which is included in the package anyway.
For a neat shooter check out the import Kyuiin which has kids riding flying vacuum cleaners.

:/ I forgot about Strider.......that game is awesome.

Strider is really easy.... A little to easy.
Pretty much all the shooters are 2D so its not really a bad thing if you ask me.
Raiden Project is awesome. Tomba! and Tomba!2 are great. Klonoa makes you think and Medievil (there are only 2 here in the states) are full on 3D so no to that...
Alundra is good stuff just hard as hell and doesnt really give you much of a place to start (or where to go once in there). I'll see what else I can come up with.

Megaman X4, 5 and 6 are no brainers, as is Wildarms (3d battles), Valkyrie Profile and Legend of Mana if you're looking for RPGs. For shooters you could always try any of the R-type games or Gekioh. :)

You may want to check out this list (http://www.geocities.com/opcfg2/2dpsx.html) I have posted on the OPCFG too. It should give you plenty of ideas.
The point blank games are fantastic gun games!
SOTN has, of course, already been mentioned. 8-)

Wild 9 is an interesting and unique platformer. Zap your enemies, throw them into meatgrinders, or toss them in water and use their heads as stepping stones. Great fun and you can usually find it dirt cheap (~$5).

I am suprised no one mentioned the best strategic game of all time....................Front Mission 3. I haven't come across one flaw with this game and i have beaten it like 6 times on both stories. The customization is amazing (especially if you have a gameshark and can add the no weight cheat, done it after i beaten it twice of course) There are so many paths that you can take on each story and it all plays out on who you fight and who joins you. Fitting out your Wanzers (pronounced Vanzers) is a key too every battle. You learn different technics with different weapon grades, there is a online simulator and even a hidden wanzer that is more powerful than any on the game. I simply love and cherrish this game, i guess you can call me a Front Mission Whore....If you don't own it, you owe yourself to go out and find a copy because its a must have for anyone.

Hmm...I've never played this version, but there's a Salamander Deluxe Pack for Saturn/PSX (according to the rarity guide) with Salamander, Life Force (the US Salamander), and Salamander 2 (originally released in 1996, 10 years after the original Salamander).

That's my favorite deluxe pack of all time. Absolutely worth picking up, if you can find it.

Strikers 1945 is also a great 2D shooter. It's an import, but not too exspensive.
Also both Lunar games are 2D

Silhouette Mirage, from Treasure (brought to the US by Working Designs), is a really fun 2D sidescrolling Action shooter. Graphics are a bit on the simple side.

Heart of darkness!!!!!!!!
I featured this in a special topic, just search for it.
But it is a godly 2d platformer, easily one of my favorite psx games of all time. If you like platformers without all of that mindless item collecting, and want flatout action is a fantasy world with puzzle elements this game is for you.

Check out Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and its sequel, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus. Both are excellent puzzle/platformers.

I just picked it up for really cheap brand new! but so far it sucks 6/10 I think abe is a much better game, this game is crazy one 12 year old kid up against 50 zillion demons?
I just bought brand new hercules the action game Disney it's kinda fun actually, pretty damn spanky 7/10 so far reminds me of the golden age of disney games aladin and lion king types (great all round) not maui mallard or mickey quest (really nice graphics but sucky gameplay imo)
I'd recommend Panzer Bandit it's purdy nifty.... 7/10
umikware sara something (spelling is also good for a puzzle game) 7/10
OT how good is tarzan? I think I want it, if it's as good as Hercules?

Dire 51 wins the grand prize for that list. Exactly what I needed to get my ass in gear on psx collecting.
From the personal pile. reccomendations:
Viewpoint - if you like games that are so hard, you want to commit suicide ninja style.
Gekioh
Raiden Project(although, raiden 1 sucks on this. Play raiden on jaguar, then use this for raiden 2.)
Qix neo - if you wish to lose a lot of sleep.
Metal Slug X - konami fucked up contra for psx hardcore. thankfully we have metal slug.
Mobile light force is good ,and cheap!
Philosoma. Damn......this is GOOD.
Being the nut i am...I will reccomend the original GTAs, having found enjoyment in them recently..and now run and hide *ducks*

so I bought tarzan it's really nice one of the better disney games (they're dead cheap now brand new if you look around, some sort of special or wharehouse cleaning) wish it was longer though, still good at least a 7/10
hercules started well but quickly degenerated into a crapfest 5/10

I'm gonna list some imports that are just plain AWESOME, but hard to find.
Captain commando - basically just like the arcade version.
Harmful Park - One of the best CUTE shooters on the platform
Adventures of Little Ralph - superb platformer
