View Full Version : Best Master System Games/Shmups
Hey guys I'm wondering what everyones favourite Master System games are and also what good Shmups are available for the console.
My personal favourite games include:
R-Type: I guess because this is the first version of the game I played. The original R-type is a great simplistic to the point shooter that I still love to plug in and play from time to time.
Lemmings: Again I like the SMS version because of nostelgia. I remember many weekends with friends trying to work out the puzzles - loved the SEGA level!
Alex Kidd in Miracle World: Best platformer I have played on SMS. For some reason I never quite 'got' the WOnderboy titles. What other platformers should I check out?

My favorite Shmups on the console are Fantasy Zone 1 and 2, R-type, Global Defense, and Thunder Blade.
My other favorites include Zillion (my favorite by far), Phantasy Star, Spellcaster, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and Wonderboy III: the Dragon's Trap.
If you're looking for platformers, definitely try Zillion (Zillion 2 is a bit different, but still good). Have you tried some of the other Alex Kidd games? People trash-talk them, but I think AK and the Lost Stars is really pretty good. It looks great, if nothing else. The first Wonderboy is totally identical to Hudson's Adventure Island on the NES. Cyborg Hunter is another interesting platformer, but it's not wonderful.

Power Strike II is a really good shooter, and a really good looking game as well.
I also like the Zillion series and Rocky.

I dont own many SMS games, but shooting gallery is so much fun! I like it more than duck hunt. (that pipe level is a bitch!) I also like space harrier.
And is it just me, or is playing miracle warriors without a map damn near impossible? I cant get anywhere in the start of the game without encountering a monster that kills me instantly!

Power Strike II DOES look really, really good... I'd like to see the NES throw around that many sprites! And no, I am not dogging the NES.

Power Strike II, from what I've played, isn't as nice as the original in some ways (i.e. the way the gold bars fall)...but in any case there's a little game for the Famicom called Crisis Force that I like best of all! ;D

You've never played Recca, have you?

I was gonna say that, but Crisis Force looks better imo :P

Lookswise, Crisis Force kills Recca. But for sheer insanity, I'd have to say Recca is better than CF. I was able to make some headway in CF, but Recca repeatedly kicks my ass on stage 1.

Well, I think Power Strike II is great (and I like that the powerups/weapons fall instead of go to the top...that's annoying). I haven't played a lot of Crisis Force or Recca, but I would still would say PSII is at least ONE of the best shooters on NES/Famicom or the SMS.
Other good shmups on the SMS: Bomber Raid's a nice 1943 knockoff. Sagaia's a very nice port of the Taito game. Power Strike's good, as is Line of Fire (though it's rather short). Astro Warrior is a nice throwback to the simpler shooters of the mid-80's like Star Force. People say Aerial Assault is boring, but it picks up later.
Other shooters on the SMS:
Transbot (very repetitive)
Action Fighter (part Spy Hunter, part overhead shmup)
Scramble Spirits
Forgotten Worlds (Does this count? Probably not.)
Satellite 7 (Japan)
Blade Eagle 3-D (requires 3-D Glasses)
Choplifter and Air Rescue (Very good games, but do they count as shmups?)
Submarine Attack (decent little underwater shmup)
Xenon 2
Hmmm I just picked up Powerstrike - will have to keep the peepers peeled for #2.
Picked up Choplifter at the same time have very fond memories of this game.

I would say it does, but that's me.
