View Full Version : Your Favorite Hybrids: Out of the Console Into the CD Player

One of the best things about full-sized disc games is that many of them are hybridized to run in audio CD players. Not only can you play the game on your console, but you can listen to it on the CD player in your car as well. It's genius I tells ya! I have a portable CD player (Discman) and whenever I go to park course to walk a few miles, I always take a couple of my games with me. Two of my favorites include Twisted Metal 2 (thanks Sniderman!) for the PSX, and Virtua Fighter for the Saturn.

What are some of your favorite games that you play AND put into a CD player?

Codename: Tenka (PSX)

Very techno. Except for the parts that suck. Oh, well...

Galaga: Destination Earth (PS1). Love the updated theme music - makes me want to get production rolling on a TV series based on the game just so more folks would get to hear it. The rest of the music is pretty good too.

My Turbo Duo Ys 1+2, 3, 4, and Dracula X. They are used more in the CD player than the game console...

Thanks Achika for pointing out Saturn Bomberman to me. I'm listening to it right now (11:15 pm Jan. 7). I just love that western style tune and the samurai world music.

For the hell of it, I placed some of my Neo Geo games into the CD player. Art of Fighting 3 is badass! I might just try all my cd games in the music player, now that I think about it. Some I have neglected since time immemorial.

Saturn Bomberman and House of the Dead for saturn

Saturn Bomberman was what I was going to say. I love Jumping Flash's music but I don't think you can play it in a cd player. Nightmare Creatures is good too.

End of story, still one of my favorite cds ever...

some current faves:

galaxy fight (saturn)- a great mix of tracks here, and one of the funniest songs i've ever heard in a game. whenever i hear that guy rapping "...i'm a mixed up guy with a mental disease..." i can't stop laughing for some reason...

tomb raider 1 or 2 (psx)- good for writing stuff to, and some spooky tracks tossed into the mix to make you jump every now and then...

elevator action returns (saturn import)- cool remix of the original tune plus a load more new stuff as well...

exile (turbo duo)
exile 2: wicked phenomenon (ditto)- 2 REALLY cool scores, although i prefer the main theme from the genesis version- it just sounds more sinister...

die hard trilogy (psx/saturn)- another fun/funny set of game tunes-i love the remixed fox themes (they've used them on the network for a while)...

scorcher (saturn)- interesting music form a game that shold have been a lot better...

wipeout 2097 (u.k. saturn)- a new and improved score, folks- really groovy b-b-b-beats.

night striker (psx/saturn)- actually, i don't like this score too much, but it's funny when you switch it with what's in someone's car cd player. it's impossible to drive to this music- you'll quickly go paranoid then insane, lol... x_x @_@ :o

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX)

Granted, it only has a couple of audio tracks, but the ones it does have are awesome. Plus, there's some cool guy talking when you first put it in, warning you that the game is for playstation only, and shouldn't be played in a CD player (and then, it goes on to play music :D ), making it the coolest thing ever.

I placed GTA (PSX) into my CD player to find 10 music tracks are on the disc. The soundtracks are very good when you can listen to them without the sounds of people being burned alive, or getting shot at with automatic weapons.

This brings up another question. Unlike GTA2, GTA3, and GTA Vice City, the GTA disc can be taken out during gameplay and be replaced with a music cd of your choice. You can continue play, even with your music cd in the PSX.

What did Rockstar do to make GTA interchangeable with music cds without stopping gameplay?

Turbo Duo:

Image Fight 2, Download 2, Lords of Thunder, Gates of Thunder, Drac X, Exile, and Exile Wicked Phenomenon. I went so far as to burn the audio tracks to separate CDs so as not to have to play with the discs too much :)

The cool thing about the Duo is that EVERY game CD had this function. All music tracks are made for CD players..yay! :D

For me it's gotta be GTA, rock, rap, and techno all on one cd! Yeah, too bad you can't do that with DC games, I love the music to Crazy Taxi. It's kinda funny I know that DC games are not readable by cd-Roms, but when I tried it, it plays a little warning message.

Gotta add Steam Heart's for the Saturn to this list. It seems like the Saturn is plenty of mentions for this thread.

PC Kwajalein: GTA can process music from a music CD without any breaks in gameplay since the game is literallly simple to the point that a console like the Sony Playstation can load all of the data needed to play a level onto its buffer. Many first generation Playstation games boasted about the fact that you could interchange a source of music without any interruptions in gameplay. Of course, all of that changed as the games became increasingly complex.

Die hard arcade is a fun one. Thats some intense driving music. Plus they use a cow bell in some of the tunes gotta love that. Also in the sega cds 6n1 pack in game I was hoping to hear some Streets of rage music, but sadly there only golden axe tunes I do belive.

WOW! I didn't realize there were so many games that had plain music files on them. Has anyone complied a list of games that have this feature? Or is it standard for all CD games? I've never thought to stick my game cd's in my cd player to see if there was music on them just as I never stuck my music CDs into my Saturn or PS2 to see if there wer games on them LOL .

Anyway a comiled list would be appreciated.

I was bummed about that as well. :(

A new Columns theme and redone Golden Axe tracks are nice but it made me wish that SEGA had taken the time to redo all the music for all the games.

Have Yuzo redo or remix his music from "Revenge of Shinobi" or "Streets of Rage"....that would have made the disc priceless.

Are sound tracks available on all game discs?

I've tried looking for video from my SegaCD discs but it all appears to be propriety video files.

Yeah, too bad you can't do that with DC games, I love the music to Crazy Taxi. It's kinda funny I know that DC games are not readable by cd-Roms, but when I tried it, it plays a little warning message. That's because DC discs were made to have a small portion of the disc be an actual CD track. Basically, this small portion is just used for the warning and keeps the CD player from trying to read the GD part.

Oh man, why did you have to tell me the Neo CD version of AoF3 could be played in a CD player?

I wonder, if it's CD readable, can you make mp3 soundtracks of these games?

For note, Street Fighter Alpha 1, Twisted Metal 1 and 2, and other early PSX entries allowed you to continue playing the level while switching CDs, I used to do this all the time, popping out TM2 and putting in my No Doubt CD.

...don't look at me like that :P

Almost all NGCD games are like that I think. I've been tempted to buy Sam Sho 2 just to use it as a music CD.

And to answer your 2nd question, I tried to make a copy of KoF '98 NGCD and ended up with a CD soundtrack.

Cyber Sled and Battle Hunter (PSX). Funny thing about Cyber Sled is that, not only does it include all the music, but all of the voice samples as well! Yay!

True dat. Though those aren't "hybridized" games (they just use Redbook audio), per se, they're very nice listens.

Ed Oscuro
08-20-2004, 11:56 PM
Same be true of the NGCD. They use Redbook audio (past track 1, I'm guessing - at least Rondo of Blood on the PC-Engine has a very short non-song track at the end of the CD, I'm guessing it's a "stop" marker perhaps) so ripping them would be a piece of cake - Windows shouldn't recognize them as Audio CDs, but perhaps another player will.

From what I remember Windows will recogize them as audio CDs.

terminator on the mega cd.
opens up with the classic terminator theme and then 8 epic tracks of 80's cheese rock goodness. freaking amazing...
monster synths, huge guitar, tight trousers, massive 80's drums, random quotes from the film, you can almost feel your hair growing into a gravity defying perm.
and its also an good game, if you ignore the crappy FMV bits, much better than the cartridge versions. but seriously, this cd is amazing!

I'm so glad someone else has listened to that. It's been cracking me up for years. The one rap song is hilarious too. That last line... "You better pee your pants, you better milk the cow"

Fucks my shit up.
