View Full Version : Excitebike - Taking the game to its limit...?

I remember I used to play this game to death when I was a kid. I fired it up before in NEStopia for a trip down memory lane, and remembered that I had once put together a custom level that pretty much took the game to its limits. After fiddling around with the level editor, I managed to recreate it, and recorded a nice video for you guys to see. Its a NEStopia movie file (.nsv format), so you'll obviously need the emulator and a rom to see the movie.

Download the file here (http://home.ripway.com/2005-5/312228/Excitebike.nsv)

I don't know if you are familiar with this bug\cheat or not, but I thought I would post it anyway :) Enjoy!

EDIT: Since it might be inconvenient for some of you to find both the emulator and rom, if anyone knows how to turn this into an .avi or .mpg please let me know!

I'm not into emulation, but I'm definitely intrigued by this 'limit' of which you speak. Could you explain what it is about the level you made that 'pushes it' so much?

Well, its set up in a way, that after a few laps the bike just goes fast as hell! By fast, I mean that it jumps from a ramp at such speed that it actually rockets through the top of the screen and appears again through the bottom. During the the final 2 laps, its actually going so fast that it does this twice!

After a while the graphics start getting all scrambled, as the game obviously wasn't designed with such a level in mind.

Just to get an idea, I did 9 laps in only 1:18:56 :P

I would post the actual ROM, Emulator and movie here in a single zip file to makes things easier, but I'd probably get in trouble if I did that...

I'm not an emulation fan either, but I do remember playing Excitebike for the NES & completed the race in 59.67 seconds. That was one of many times I completed it under a minute.

Sounds interesting. But I don't have a Mac, so I can't run the video. Oh well. I hope someone does a conversion.

I have a Mac.

I have NEStopia.

I have an "Excitebike" ROM.

That file still doesn't work.

What am I doing wrong?

Might be the wrong version of the emulator or an incorrect ROM file (even the naming can make a difference).

So then, Lord Magus, what was the ROM named, like, exactly? Version and such...

Ok everyone, I finally managed to convert the movie into a ~5MB .avi. :D

The file can be downloaded here (http://home.ripway.com/2005-5/312228/Excitebike.avi)

Ed, thanks for directing me to fraps - I'd been looking for a decent .avi capturing utility for a while, and this one seems like it was the only one worth downloading. Since I was using the unregistered version, I was limited to only 30 seconds of video, so I took 3x30" movies and merged them into one, which created 2 moments of jerkiness in the resulting .avi.

The total time can be improved upon for sure - as you will see I was a bit rusty when I recorded it. :P

Anyway, hope you enjoy, and let me know what you think! :)

Your entire homepage seems to be gone. If you need a place to host that file, PM me.

The link in the 2nd edit, 1st post (excitebike.rar) is the working video clip link.

Pretty impressive.

Its a mechanical gameplay glitch that the engineers didn't find on bugtesting. Good job! Haven't seen that bug reported before and it was pretty damn funny.

Can you check out some of the ports of excitebike and try to recreate it to see if it carried out in the code. Only one that I know of is the classic nes series on gba.

PS. Screw you mac people ;)

What about the port on Animal Crossing?

I'm not sure if this bug\glitch has been transferred onto the other ports of this game, and unfortunately I don't have any other versions to try it out myself.

Is anyone willing to look into it and see what they discover?

What you have to do to set up the track is this:
1) start off your track with a "cooler" (M)
2) insert a ramp (H)
3) insert 12 "coolers" (M)
4) repeat steps 2+3 until the end of the track. That's it!

Now, the trick to gain speed, is to hold forward when jumping, and press back for a moment just before landing (as shown in the video). It takes a bit of practice to get it done correctly, but its not really that hard. ;)

Also, sometimes your jumps will not be timed correctly, and you'll end up unavoidably landing onto the next ramp and crashing. It took me 4-5 tries to do it properly, so don't get disappointed if it doesn't work out the first few times :)

Anyway, if anyone decides to try it out on the other versions, I'd be very interested to know what you discover!

cool vid, I never played that game enough to fool around with the track editor, it was good enough with the stock tracks :)
