not sure how many of you care

"After several weeks of lawyer negotations with G4 (my 9-5 job), they have agreed to release me from my contract. Friday May 27th 2005 marks my last day on the G4 network. That means we are focusing on thebroken / Systm FULL TIME! We are starting to plan the next episode of thebroken now, and we'll send out another update as we get closer to the release! Now that this is our full-time job, expect to see many more video releases coming your way!"

I wonder how many are watching this channel anymore. I was actually pretty interested in it when it started but in the last several months, I've hardly watched it at all. I don't even think to tune in when the 3 shows I like (Judgment Day, X-Play, G4tv.com) are on. I guess I get my gaming fix here and don't need that channel...

Wow, people actually liked Kevin Rose?

I'm sorry, according to Kevin Rose, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is the best fighting game ever made, and that is PROOF that he does not know jack when it comes to gaming.

He was/is knowledgeable about PC and other software/hardware, but I wanted to slap him in the mouth every time he talked about games.

Rose might be a dickhead, but was one of the few remaining pieces left from the "old days", and actually knows the technical side of it. When G4 started, it seemed like a little gamer network that didn't really have much programming but still tried. Look how many times a day they would show the same thing. Today they still show the same stuff all day long(like X-Play 10 times a day), but they really badly want to be Mtv, with all of the Street racing & "why is this crap on a video game channel" stuff.

I thought I heard that Rose & Sarah were dating, so is she far behind? Soon it will be the Kevin Perrera show.

You know I was actually starting to like AOTS for what it was (i.e. not the screen savers, but its own entity). Kevin, Kevin and Sarah put on a great show because it seemed like they were all great friends and they were having a good time doing it. Even if the show wasn't the greatest, it was still fun to watch, IMHO. Now with one of the Kevin's gone all that's left is Sarah picking on the other Kevin. This sounds like it was his own personal choice so I can't be mad at the network.

Tech TV was going down the crapper before the merger, but once they merged, I stopped watching for the most part. Once I moved from my old place and didn't get the channel, I have never missed it.

The G4 hosts are obnoxious or just ignorant about games (like on that g4tv.com show, where the hosts literally scream over each other) and they -- like most cable/sattelite channels -- re-run their shows into the ground (when someone else posted that Xplay is on 10 times a day, that's not an exaggeration).

A video game channel is going to be a niche one at best, but they seem to be trying to go for a mainstream audience, which is really destined to fail. Gaming geeks aren't going to care about "lifestyle" shows or two-hour-long shows about Madden tournaments, and joe six-pack thinks stuff like "Icons" (one of G4's few interesting shows, though, as pointed out before, it's too short) is stupid.

Like Rogmeister said, you have to wonder how many people actually watch the network anymore. They lost most of their "techy" audience when Leo was canned, and most the gamers out there are tuning out as well. Judging from their message boards, their audience seems to be teenagers who are busy whacking off to Morgan Webb's Maxim/FHM pictures and not much else.

I really don't see G4 lasting more than a year or so as a "gaming" network. Unless they go back to their roots, they're doomed. If they're trying to be more of a "lifestyle" network, there are several others already established (Like Spike and Fuel). If I was Adam Sessler, I'd probably start looking for another job.

Even though they've gone through money like it was free, G4 is bound and determined to realize their vision (a hip, MTV-like channel for the "gamer lifestyle," whatever you take that to mean). As for Sessler, I'm sure G4 would do whatever they can to keep him there.

I have to agree, that's pretty much all I watch on G4 as well.

G4 already drug TechTV down and destroyed it. I really have no use for that station anymore. They think they are too hip to keep Leo Laporte around, bah

Yup, could go on for hours how Comcast pulled TechTV from it's service to lower it's market price so they could buy it for less and eliminate their "compeition," (like the craptastic network that was G4 was ever anything like ZDTV / TechTV) finally bought the network, then killed it and tried to scam long time viewers into thinking they would merge.. but these forums are better suited for more enjoyable things to talk about. :)

They should fire that dumbass from the play show.....God I hate him lol. He makes gamers look like dorks.

If you're talking about Adam Sessler you need to remember that he was hosting GamespotTV on ZDTV (which became TechTV) long before G4 was even an idea - we're talking like eight years ago. And before that I used to watch him on bay area public access. You must be blind not to see that all of G4 is making gamers look like dorks, not someone who knows a wealth about the industry but is being forced to hold back and take the business end of every stupid wisecrack the network throws at him.

Now with one of the Kevin's gone all that's left is Sarah picking on the other Kevin. This sounds like it was his own personal choice so I can't be mad at the network.

It was, if you listen to Leo Laporte's weekly podcast "This Week in Tech" you can hear it directly from him. TWiT is basically all the old ZDTV / TechTV personalties getting together for about an hour once a week and talking tech and answering questions.

Adam Sessler is SUPPOSED to be getting his own show (which from the stuff I read would be a lot like the old ZDTV show Silicon Spin except about the video game industry instead of the tech industry) - that's probably the only reason he would stay.

By the way, no female TechTV / ZDTV / G4 personality will ever get close to the lovely Laura Burstein...

...she used to do chat moderation on TechTV for TechLive (back when it was a three hour program set up like CNN).

I was pretty much done with them as soon as unscrewed was canned.

G4 and tech TV were ok channels before, but both had the problem opf too much repeating. I had hoped that the merger would have basically made the channels just be on the same number and mix up what was on a little more. Of course no, g4 decides to go headfirst into the stupid overcomercialization of gaming that's happeneing today, kill all their good shows, fie all their good people, and kill tech TV in the process. Lame ass. I was hoping for starcade, then icons, then portal, then TSS, xplay, and unscrewed. but NOOOOOO let's talk about madden 12 hours a day and have celebrities hold controllers and shit. what the fuck.

BTW, regarding Call for Help: Leo and the gang are still trying to sell the show to the US, but definitely not to G4 (not that G4 would want to anyway). Last time he talked about that, he said that he got turned down by PBS and TLC. But he hasn't given up just yet. And the show can now be seen in Australia.

Oh, and I don't like G4's new logo. I get to see it for some shows as it's embedded with them -- here we still have the old G4TechTV logo, which makes sense since Rogers (the main owner of G4TechTV Canada) is keeping the techtv side alive through Call for help and their new weekly show, Gadgets and Gizmos.

It's funny, I actually like Call for Help, even though I'd fall asleep watching it sometimes. LOL I liked Leo though, more than the idiots G4 replaced them with. And yes, I think Adam Sessler is actually smart about games (I think you were able to see a faint bit of his former self during the E3 coverage). Of course, 12 year olds love seeing him get stapled in the crotch, and that's what G4 decides to focus on. I loved Extended Play and GamespotTV back in the day, and Xplay was good for a while, until like most people have noted, the merger happened and everything on that channel turned to crap. When the reviews focus more on stupid skits and porn jokes than the actual game, that's when I have to say, "game over".

Speaking of Kevin Rose, you should be seeing him (if you haven't already) on a couple episodes of Call For Help 2.0 on G4TechTV Canada. Damn, it must be nice having G4 only own one third of the network up there. :)

I just wish MSNBC would give Leo a helping hand for US distribution of Call For Help 2.0, after all he did win a Peabody award for The Site, which he created (as well as TSS and CFH) and if you remember The Site (it only ran for like 8 months) then you probably also know Leo did the voice and motion of the show's CG counterpart Dev Null.

The thing I hated about the change from Extended Play to X-Play was that the Game News dissapeared - WTF?! That was the best part! Also the location shoots were always cool, but alas as with all of ZDTV / TechTV good things simply don't last long.

Worst shows on G4:

Judgment Day - Bad videogame ratings, talk too much, dumb show.

G4TV.com - A pair of broads discuss nothing but Halo & Madden series on every show & over useing the term "fanboy"

I want G4 cancel these shows I mentioned cause they're a total waste of time & too many "fanboys" & "fangirls" worship this kind of garbage that I do not comprehend.

Ugh, I can't stand Tommy Tallarico -- he just comes off like a pompous ass, and isn't a good video game reviewer at least supposed to appear impartial. The guy always will give a "kiddie" game a bad score... I guess he still has bad feelings about working on Mick & Mack Global Gladiators.

The guy's done some good work on soundtracks, but he really has no business being a reviewer. They should take Sessler off of Xplay and team him up with Victor (who is pretty good). Leave Morgan on Xplay to jump around in bikinis or something.

geesh people its a start, before G4 came along you'd be lucky to even see an ad for videogames on TV let alone a feature or a show. its progress in my book, perfect no but a step up from nothing at all. for my money watching a video game review on TV (you know where we play games) is worlds more useful than reading a game magazine. even if you dont like the host or reviewer in question actually seeing the game being played tells you more than any onlne review can. ditto that for cinematech, i get a taste of games i've never heard about, its not a bad thing at all.

geelw
05-26-2005, 01:47 AM
well, every time i see those AWFUL westwood college commercials (especially the new one which looks like it was shot in 1978 with the two 'game testers" and their female boss) and the veloz ads for spyware REMOVAL which is actually a spyware LOADER that makes you pay to have the crap it installs on your computer removed, i just don't enjoy watching anything other than cinematech there. x-play is now "skit bi-weekly featuring ratty", G4's E3 coverage was a balance between enjoyable and crap (too much forced "comedy", not enough time spent with more games that should have gotten press), and whee- a show about drift racing clogging up sunday nights??? wtf?

"at least there's a videogame channel"... where, i'd sure as hell like to know. the MAIN problem with G4 is schizophenic programming over the last two or so years. icons is either "let's hype this new game or movie before it's released" or "let's do half-ass game history with errors no one will notce because our core audience isn't that smart." there have been some neat shows, but i'd agree that the show needs to be a hour per episode and better researched.

i was never a big fan of unscrewed, but the show was pretty hilarious when i caught it. i remember the last few episodes were interesting because the show was going to be cancelled, martin & laura knew it, and they went out with some really wild bits that had me shaking my head and cracking up. oh well- wonder what they're up to now?

the channel also needs a more stable set of shows- call for help was fantastic because it covered stuff non-gamers could turn to G4 for, i hated the screen savers initially as it was just a watered down call for help, but it sort of grew on me before the less intelligent kevin showed up, AOTS was/is annoying from front to back, and i'd rather see the older version of pulse on fridays than G4TV (or the "we like killing stuff, and most other games just suck" show). changing hosts and formats every few months smacks of trying too hard to cater to an audiece with a short attention span that only wants to see stuff they can post about all over the message boards.

we'll see what happens over the next few months. i know nothing is permanent in tv-land, but G4 has been sliding sideways and down for a while and is coasting on fumes...

I originally ordered digital cable to get the TechTV channel since I was interested in it from watching some ZDTV way back when. I loved watching it and it was basically the only station I watched. The merger happened and I figured I'd keep it since I loved video games (even though I heard the station was leaving a lot to be desired) and what a perfect match.

Ugh. I cancelled my digital cable subscription a month or two into the merger and from what I read on message forums it was a wise decision. Maybe someone shold start a death pool for g4? ;-)

I really like that show..Laura and Tina DO play video games. Tina used to be on Halo 2 all the damn time, and a quick look at either of their blogs has them talking about the various games they're working on reviewing.

What you have to realize is that the show is taped for a 4 hour period, and then cut down to a half hour. I'm pretty sure it'd work better if it was longer, but as it is it's about the only good piece of original G4 programming left on the air.

Maybe Comcast in your area pulled it, but Comcast here hasn't touched the channel since they put it on the lineup (back when it was ZDTV).

And yes, I think Adam Sessler is actually smart about games (I think you were able to see a faint bit of his former self during the E3 coverage). Of course, 12 year olds love seeing him get stapled in the crotch, and that's what G4 decides to focus on.

I've read that Adam actually enjoys playing the "spaz" on X-Play.

I saw the Laura in a Wendy's commercial for their new salads. Haven't seen Martin, but judging his show, he's likely drunk and/or stoned, looking at pr0n on the internet.

I hope Martin finds his way back to TV.

Martin is a very funny man.

And honestly i still say portal is a decent premise for a show, and actually wasn't executed *too* poorly.

Then again I seem to have a thing for shows with main characters in jumpsuits.
