not even an hour into the game yet and i already need help O_O
i'm at a part where i had to activate 4 runes, its in a swamp area with a big tree in the middle with branches that come out of the walls and lash at you. i activated the runes, i see the passageway where i have to roll up into a ball to fit it, but there are 2 sandstones in the passage and my scanner says they are weak, but i can't figure out how to break them. can somebody tell me please?

You're going the wrong way. You don't need to go through those sandstones until you get the bombs which happens later ;)

If you activated all 4 runes, then the entrance you need to go through should be open and you can reach it by jumping around. As quoted from gamefaqs.com

Watery Hall:
NEW CHOZO LORE: Meteor Strike
You need to find 4 runic marks in the room by scanning them to activate them. Immediately after entering the room, turn left and on the back wall to the left, over the water (same wall as which you came through, but further right) is the first Rune. Scan it (the scan mark shows red). Next, head up the right wall (right as in right from where you came in). Jump from roped platform to roped platform until a Reaper Vine jumps out at you. Take care of him, then jump to the platform just beyond that one. Turn slight right towards the big metal wall of rune symbols. Just below it is the second, and to the right of it is the third. Scan them, the jump down to the second rune. Turn around and jump platforms until you reach the blastcaps. Kill them to uncover the fourth. This will open the door. Head back up the roped platforms and head through, scanning the dor to open it. Viola! Charge Beam! Use it on the nasty Eyons that appear after. Charged shots will kill them completely. Now, head back to the Gathering Hall.

I'm stuck immediately after that.

I defeated the boss thing (Flaaahraaal or something like that) that is behind those sandstone blocks the poster described. Now it seems I can get a little ways, into a lot of different places, but without grapple or anything I seem to be stonewalled. I walk a long ways, and end up dead ended after 10 minutes of backtracking.

Where the flip do I go now? It's probably in front of my face...

(This is my first serious attempt at a Metroid game. I have metroid and Super metroid, but have never really played either. If this goes well, I shall give them a go)

If you're really stuck go get yourself a FAQ at gamefaqs.com

Here I'll even link to it directly for you ;) http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/game/32495.html

Incidentally, I'm 40% into the game and I don't even have the grapple hook yet so obviously it's not needed until way later.

MP is a hard game if you don't *look* around in each room for any hidden clues or secrets.
