View Full Version : There's a fire! What one item do you save?

Hopefully a similar thread doesn’t already exist. My apologies if one does.

In an emergency, with little time to think your choice through, what one item would you grab in the heat of the moment, saving it from impending destruction?

My choice is quite easy. I would save the folder I store printouts of my consoles, games and accessories lists in. I would rather remember what I once had, rather than save one game.

What about you? What would you save? Would you choose to save nothing?

PC tower (monitors and everything else can be replaced, hard-earned data is another story), and any of the decent stacks of burned stuff nearby. if worse comes to worse at least you'd have emulation.

i can't decide which cdr stack i'd want the most though...probably try and get any of the cd-based system stacks since those are tricker/take longer to obtain.

i'd save this

1. My Girlfriend
2. My stack of dvds with my latest back-up
3. If possible, my "history"-folder in which i store important things from my past which could not be replaced
4. If also possible, my box with one-of-a-kind stuff from my collection (nothing in there yet LOL )

with all of that, pretty much everything would be saved, the back-up also contains my collection overview and photos of what my appartment looked like so i'd get money for everything back from my insurance

After saving my girlfriend (granted she hasn't already saved me!)
...and after saving my cat (when I get one)
...and even after saving my computer (which holds all of my music - very important)...
...the one videogame-thing that I'd save would be...well it's a tie between the Gamecube (with GB Player attached & hopefully some games) OR the Saturn and my mini-collection of Saturn imports including Rockman 8, Radiant Silvergun & NiGHTS.

First my family and myself of course. If time, I would grab photoalbums. Photos cant be replaced, other stuff usualy can.

If I had time for games I would probly take all the mega man games + sealed stuff. I dont have anything SUPER rare acctualy so I guess most can be replaced, except all my composed music, must have saved that too :)

Can we count the two cats as one item?

Hopefully I'd find time to grab the details of my condo insurance policy.

if this is anything at all, I would save my kids. If this is video game related, i would grab my apf1000. I would like to save my computer but the fact is most games can be replaced. As long as you save proof and documentation that you have the games insurance can help too.

If i had enough time, i would shove all my PSone games in the empty box near my bed and head out with my daughter and fiancee. If not i would just make sure my fiancee and my daughter get out safe.

It would have to be my pets, no question...my cats Shadow & Cindy and my guinea pig Cocoa. If someone says that's more than one item then I simply stuff Shadow & Cindy into Cocoa's cage and carry THAT out. I will not leave my family to die...the hell with any electronic toys...

If we are talking about ANYthing in the room, it might have to be my PC, as I have years of documents and pictures on it. Second in line would be my photo albums!

Games though... not sure. Too many to choose. I'd go grab the hose and defend my room to the death!

EDIT: Family and pets too of course! LOL

Hey

Two weeks ago the church my family goes to burnt up and I posted this thread
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=61201&sid=4da2b3669332c94ab5bb5cb750337ccf
So I have spent a bit of time thinking bout this.

Finding ticket stubs to concerts I went to in 1978 and 1980 on ebay for less than $10 was an eye opener. Seeing how much a Schwinn Lemon Peeler bike like mine I sold for $5 in 1976 was more of an eye opener but thats a different story.

I would bet that every video game related item I own is replaceable. Except ..

Memories.

Memories of playing pong for the first time and Space Invaders and Asteroids and Battle Zone. Even beating Drangons Lair. But there is no physical stuff to go along with this and my first gen collection now just seems to be an enhancement for the memories from that time.

All my interesting pictures have been digitized along with dozens of kids drawings. Even 8 mm home movies from 40 years ago were put on VHS tape about 15 years ago and recently recorded on to VCD. Copied and given to a dozen relatives. The new pics and movies are also copied on several CD's and given to grandparents. So they are spread around. Makes me wonder what my kids will be saving 20 years from now. Where will the hundred hours of DV or the megabytes of pictures be.

So to answer the question it would be nothing besides my family.

I think i'd try to get my parents and dog out, then get my rarest stuff out.

The rest can be replaced.

Edit: After reading VJ's post, I think i would try to gather all of my drawings, Videotapes of family, Photo albumbs, Pictures... The List goes on.

I'm in agreement here, if there was a fire in my house the only thing I would be saving would be my own ass :D

You can always buy more games but you only have one life.

People always ask me that. "If there was a fire, and you could only take 1 game, what would you take."
I usually reply with something like: "Well, I could easily take more than one game if I was taking one game."
But if I were only to take one game, I'd probably just take the rarest one I own: Spiker! for the INTV.
My favorite game is SMB 1, but why would I take that?
I'd judge what I take based on how hard it would be to get it again.

Id let my pc burn so my parents would get me a new one, *kicks his old pos*

I would try to save as many things as possible of course. But if i had to choose i would take as many guitars as i could carry along with my Neo Geo. Everything else is replaceable.

I can see myself risking my life for my stupid collection.
Im sure I would grab my Vectrex, and my top-loader, deposite them outside, then go back in for more.
I would have to save all my NES games, and their all in those plastic drawers,so Id just pull one out at a time.
My house is pretty small, so Im pretty sure everything I really care about would come out of it playable...

I was just thinking about this scenario yesterday.

Actually Im more worried about humidity.

I can see myself risking my life for my stupid collection.

WHY? your household insurance (dunno if it is called that way) covers your collection too if you just make sure you've got proof of what you had

I'd have to save my 2 cats first. Then, both of my PCs harddrives (photos & personal stuff). My game collection is mostly common stuff and would be fairly easy to replace.

Well, assuming the wife and the pets are already safe, I would take my fraternity paddle. More than 24 hours of arm breaking work sanding, sanding, sanding, oh it was awful. Then came the endless hours of using that damn woodburning pen... I burned my fingers raw using that damn thing. But I would have to say I have never put so much work into one thing in my life. It was sweet, A damn fine paddle. Didnt even think of snagging on the panty hose when they dropped it in (smooth as a babys ass), and luckily I passed the gravel test after that. :)

And if it HAS to be game related, It would be My GC probably

well, of course I'd make sure my family & dog are safe, but then I'd make an attempt to grab my SNES w/ my copy of Earthbound. If that was all I could save, I'd be happy. Nothing in my collection has more sentimental value to me than my SNES & earthbound...It was such an integral part of my childhood that I'd hate to leave it behind. Everything else is pretty much replaceable.

I would save my brown box of mint in box NES games. There is something inspiring about the first Zelda game's box, with its little hole cut so you can see the gold cart inside. It was the first game that I bought with my own money, BTW. All previous games were gifted to me one way or the other. Of course, the new MIB copy that I have was not the first one that I bought. I still have that cart, but it is in terrible condition, with the label mostly peeled off and a huge crack in the cart's plastic casing.

The battery is dead inside too. I need to spend an afternoon servicing all of my NES equipment, batteries and 72-pin connectors and all that jaz.

Since I have two hands, I would also save at least one of my copies of Super Mario Kart... the new MIB "Player's Choice" version, as it as the superior DSP1b chip inside as opposed to the older DSP1 chip.

i hope the in the future that i would have a set up that can be saved in a fire -- all old stuff - not current gen stuff

either you can slamm it all through a wall

or wheel it out easily and quickly

or close it up to survive the the flame and heat

this would apply to other house stuff too

but for now - the way all my stuff is - the senario would be - grab my underware and run out, then cry

After saving my family, I'd probably just take my PC tower... So much work, code, music and games on there - it would be a shame to let it go to waste.

I don't really have a large collection of console games, so what I would save next if I had time would be hardware: my modified SNES,my PS2 and my GBA SP.

legov8
05-27-2005, 03:04 PM
I don't know. It would probably be:
Mario Kart 64 because it's my first game
Memory cards because they have all my info
Stunt Racer 64 and Cruis'n Exotica because they are the rarest games in my collection.
Unless all my gaming stuff is in one box that I could take.

I don't stop saving stuff until I'm on fire myself. (Because then I'd start to melt the games)

Faxanadu is one of the greatest games ever!!!

You should PM me a link to where you got that rip in your avatar. And any other faxanadu rips-MP3's you may have found.

Well, limiting it to just gaming stuff, I'd take the one thing that is irreplaceable: my personalized Koji Hayama autograph. After that I'd want my tri-Ace stuff including the memory cards with important files and my most expensive games like Rondo of Blood.

Lemmy Kilmister
05-28-2005, 12:48 AM
Depends. If I only saved my rare stuff then I would have to grab my Master System Girl, Kiri Kaze, Turrican 2 and a few other R7's, 8's.

However, If it came down to what I would play the most, then I'd grab my modded Xbox and as much SNES games as I could carry.

That's easy, I grab my hard drive.

I would set up all my rare, and valuable items in a specific section of my bookcase, so that if there is a fire, I can get a garbage bag, dump them in and I'm out (of course if it looks too bad, then the hell with the games/stuff). I would also take my laptop, wallet, and psp.

Ed Oscuro
05-29-2005, 06:36 PM
Jeez, I'd burn up before I even got to them LOL

Probably Samurai Spirits 4 and the cartridge version of Akumajo Dracula...and Contra: The Hard Corps, my nice nice perfectly nice Japanese copy, along with a few other JP Mega Drive games (two copies of Battle Mania...how much is that worth anyhow? First copy was $70+ and the second was $30, lol). Actually I'd just start chucking shit out the window, hell.

So many things to choose from, only 2 hands.....I guess my book of ticket stubs. Inside are 100+ from shows in the past 7 years, autographs, pictures, misc. show items (set lists, picks, backstage passes etc.) If I can't save my music I'll save the memories from it. At least it's something to look at when I'm sitting in my new cardboard living room.
