Microsoft Fixes Flaw in Xbox Web Site

By TechWeb News

A security company often at odds with Microsoft said Wednesday it had identified a vulnerability in the Redmond, Wash.-based developer's Xbox Web site that could be used by phishers to shanghai personal information.

The bug, called a "cross-scripting" vulnerability, affected Microsoft's Xbox 360 site, where gamers can get a sneak peak at the upcoming console's features. According to Finjan Software, the vulnerability could let phishers harvest such things as e-mail addresses and credit card numbers.

Finjan told Microsoft of its findings last week; Microsoft quickly modified the site to eliminate the vulnerability.

"This discovery is another example of our cooperation with Microsoft and other leading software vendors to fix vulnerabilities before they are exploited by the hacking community," said Shlomo Touboul, Finjan's chief executive in a statement.

That conciliatory tone is at odds with past blow-ups between Finjan and Microsoft. Last November, for instance, Finjan claimed that Windows XP SP2 had 10 unpatched vulnerabilities, and Microsoft responded by calling the San Jose, Calif.-based security firm's claims "potentially misleading and possibly erroneous."

At the time, a Microsoft spokesperson said "We encourages Finjan to abide by the principles of responsible disclosure and to decline to provide further comment or details on the alleged vulnerabilities until Microsoft is able to complete its investigation and can respond."

Microsoft officials have been relentless in their criticism of security researchers whom they think prematurely disclose vulnerability information.

Who cares?! I'm not getting the 360. I'm gonna get the Revolution! That looks like it's going to be the best one and it looks the coolest too.

Wow, you're so cool. Not only did you shorten the word "Microsoft" to "MS," but you repleaced the "S" with a "$."

That is freaking genius. I totally get it, because Microsoft makes a lot of money so it's "M$." Sony makes a lot of money too so maybe we could call them "$ony." Sega doesn't make that much money, but they're a business and the point of any business is to make money, we could call them "$ega."

This is such a fun game!! Maybe we can even call "business" "bu$ine$$" and we can call President Bush" Pre$ident Bu$h!"

This is so clever, I can't believe that you thought of this. I mean, you must've been the first person ever on "teh" whole planet to think of this because a seriously have NEVER seen anyone call Microsoft "M$," before... not once, nope, NEVER!!

What does Microsoft have to do with money, anyway?

Anyway, this website security thing obviously shows how the 360 will tank. Thanks for the heads-up.

Hey, don't forget about the bug in Wipeout that allows users to surf the web on their PSP. By the same logic, this obviously means the PSP will tank, and since it connects to the PS3, the PS3 will tank as well.

Using that logic, this obviously means if attached peripherals tank, TV's, Audio Equipment, Digital Cameras, MP3 players AND EVEN THE INTERNET will tank since they all connect to the Xbox 360.

The entire consumer electronics industry and global internet economy has taken a death spiral due to a [fixable] glitch in a website!

For all the sarcasm above, the conclusions seem rather feasible.

Does anyone really expect M$ (Pacman!!) websites to be secure??

the PS3 will tank as well

It may very well tank.

The US market isn't ready for a new DVD format. There are some early adopters on here that drool at crap like that but the market isn't there.

The price point should be insane it seems. I don't think that the market has changed enough for enough morons to buy a console for $450 or whatever it will come out at, not to mention if they try to put games at $60 for no reason (though they will make one up, they already did anyway).

The Cell processor is not the kind of thing that games will be able to utilize to it's full extent.

Software support early on may be tragically weak. Where's all the real time game footage for some of that stuff. Oh, wait, the games don't exist in any real form yet. They are selling it based on graphics that are "simulated" and will never F'ing materialize.

The intent of developers to support the thing won't save it if the other factors hold sway.

The thing looks rather clunky. It doesn't look like a Japanese design. Or any other kind other than WTF for that matter.
The clunkiness can be a factor in JP perhaps.

the PSP will tank

It may. Or it may not. It's clunky and has poor software with the exception of say, Lumines, and the other features are poorly tacked on. It costs a stupid amount of money and will continue to.

Sales in Japan aren't blowing away the DS folks. When some of the better DS stuff rolls around the PSP falls back in sales there, and hopefully will here.

Of course, all the PS2 succeeded because people are Sony's bitches (Other than the Nippon-Ichi stuff it served as a glorified paper weight in my experience), so the PS3 and PSP may very well follow the crap Sony products own the mindless masses trend.

The PS3 and PSP however are certainly not the sure thing that the PS2 was.....

the 360 will tank

Again, very possibly. But whatever.

Don't be the first one with your back to the wall when the revolution comes..... Or, again, whatever floats yer boat.

Woohoo... I am liked!!

I have a Show Daily from E3 this year that says that the Xbox 360 will link with the PSP as well. So I guess the 360 and the PS3 are doomed.

This generation will be the return of Nintendo! While $ony and Micro$oft are flying their Saturn V rockets in outer space, Nintendo will be safely driving on Earth with their less powerful but safer Porche.

See... Nintendo really was wise not to ever invest in the fad of the internet and online gaming. T3h internet is Microsoft and Sony's ultimate downfall!! (Thats to the PSP and the Wip3out glitch!)

You know, I've barely seen any PSP stuff in Japan. I've seen a shit ton of DS stuff, mostly games (especially Nintendogs) and a few systems, but for PSP all I've seen are some systems and the movies...not even much shelf space in comparison to the DS. Take it as you will, but it just seems to me like the PSP isn't selling as well here.
