Videogame console companies without mascots or franchise 'heroes':
Atari?
Panasonic 3DO (Or does Gex count?)
Tiger Game.Com
SNK Neo Geo
Magnavox CDI
$ony, on & off - Sony originally had ENOS, a polygonal head of a spokesmodel, but the company ditched him/her/it in no time flat. Crash Bandicoot used to be $ony's answer to Mario & Sonic before being 'sold out.' The closest thing that $ony had to Crash for awhile was Spiro, and even that character is no longer a $ony exclusive. How long will it be until pseudo-mascots Jak & Daxter get sold out as well?
Micro$oft - Halo's Master Chief was never promoted as a company mascot.

Are there any other names that ought to be considered, or would you like to discuss some of the companies I've mentioned?

Was the alligator private detective (alligator in trenchcoat and fedora) an actual mascot for the FM Towns Marty? Or is that just a character Gamefan decided to put in the Marty section each month?
If it was real, it was the stupidest fucking mascot of all time.

Good question. I have no idea, as I'm not very familiar with the FM Towns system nor its games.

Oh, and Neo Geo had their snarling, rabid bulldog mascot. You used to be able to get shirts, buttons, and bumper stickers with it on there.

That's true; I forgot about that one (probably becasue he/she isn't featured in a Neo Geo game... to the best of my knowledge, anyway).

A lot of people probably thought that Laura Croft (Tomb Raider) was $ony's mascot. Thing is, Tomb Raider is not a $ony franchise, so Croft would be more like a second-party tie in than an official company mascot (Kinda like what Rare's Battletoads were to Nintendo at one point). Also, Tomb Raider started out on the Saturn before being ported to the Playstation.

The Neo Geo had some creepy clown guy very early on. I can't remember his name at the moment. BTW, I always assumed Terry Bogard and Haohmaru were SNK's mascots.
Coleco didn't really have a mascot, did it?

I could have sworn that bulldog was in one of the Fatal Fury games......where you chose something in some menu (like who you wanted to fight next or something like that) and when you pressed a button to confirm it, your bulldog head would launch into a angry barking animation. Memory is fuzzy here......

I have several magazines with PS1 ads featuring ENOS.
... Few seem to remember ENOS (I started a thread about him/her/it awhile back, although I have no idea what happened to it).

Are you sure you weren't stoned when playing that particular game? :-P Just kidding there, although the experience you mentioned does sound sorta trippy in a bizarre, malacious sense.

The bulldog is in several games in the starting menu. He is in Fatal Fury II and Special, those are the only two i have that he is in.

You forgot about about the Enos from Dukes of Hazzard. ;)
Try a search for "ugly purple head". I do not know ENOS, but I distinctly remember an ugly purple head. Polygonal, naturally. I think his sole purpose was to give children nightmares.

Blasto was an attempt at a 1st party mascot for sony. But the game sucked so he didn't make it.

Don't think Lara Croft counts. In Europe there was even a Saturn which came in with Tomb Raider with a special Tomb Raider sleeve to promoto the package so that doesn't count. This Saturn [pack was the only Saturn package which came with a special sleeve for the outside to put extra attention to the pack-in game. All other pack-in games were just announced by putting a sticker on the box.

In Japan, Sony has the little white Playstation cat, the one that's on the Pocketstation box.
I have a mug with that cat on it, I don't recall the mascot's name though.
I think that part of it is that a mascot really does need to be at least sort of cartoon-ish, I mean, you can't use the GTA guy. Thing is, the cartoonish games, aside from Nintendo, are no longer the biggest sellers on a given system, now it's stuff like GT4, or Halo, or Madden, or something like that.
