View Full Version : I think I've been burned. Any advice anyone?

I won an auction for a PS2 game from an overseas seller way back in March. They claimed to have sent it the following day after I had made my paypal payment, but they were unsure as to the shipping method.

They later said that it could have been surface shipping from the UK, which would generally take about 8 weeks for the item to arrive.

It's been two months now and I still have no game. I tried filing a paypal refund complaint, but since the 45 day limit has passed, there's nothing that paypal will do.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do next?

Advice is appreciated.

Surface rate can take ages, 2 months is about the minimum from the UK to US or vice-versa.
The guy is an idiot for sending it by surface (unless you asked for the cheapest rate?) but I wouldn't brand him a thief just yet.
Give it another month at least before you get worried.

Where do you find this refund claim on Paypal's website? I believe the same thing may have happened to me!

Thanks for the advice, anagrama. I'm still a bit irritated that the seller didn't even bother to ask me what type of shipping I wanted, especially since I paid 5 GBP (did I get that right?) for shipping to the USA.

The seller's original asking rate for shipping was 3 GBP within the UK, but then he said to add 2 GBP for USA shipping.

That works out to about $7.50 for USA shipping, yet the seller chooses to ship it out by surface mail.

I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope it arrives at some point.

Hello Kyn.

It should be located somewhere on the transaction details page for the item(s) you bought through paypal.

If not, do a general search from the 'help' area of paypal.

Hope this answers your question.

Agree, surface mail sux!
One time i waited about 9 weeks from a package from USA to Europe.
At the moment I'm waiting for 2 packages from USA, both have been sent with surface mail :(
I have waited 7 weeks for one of the package and about 5 for the other and still havnt recived them.

If you waited 8 weeks i think its too late to fill a complain to Paypal. It must be done within 45 days if I rememeber correctly.
But eventho the package have been sent without a tracking number the package do have some sort of number. Ask the seller for this number as proof or ask for a reciept for the shipping.

Good luck :)

What would that prove? It's not possible to track surface mail, so they could just give any old number if they were pulling a scam.

The number do have some data in it so I dont think it helps to give an old number. USPS can check this.
Once I filled a complain to Paypal and the seller responed with this number as proof of sending.

OK, I give up. You obviously have more experience of sending international packages from the UK than I do, right?

What are you giving up?
How can I send from UK? I dont even live there  And what do USPS have to do with UK?
Just call/mail USPS if you want to know the right answer then, its not that hard.

Might have a few things there.. I personally dont like shipping anywhere but the US. Too much of a hassle and I HATE filling out customs forms. My buddy got burned cuz of customs when he shipped to canada and 1, got undercut on his shipping. 2 got a neg feedback because customs took a week on top of the UPS 2 week ground to send it through

Then I suggest you refrain from offering misleading "advice" when you don't know what you are talking about.

Fact: There is no way to track or identify an international package sent through the Royal Mail. Even items sent by the registered 'International Signed For' rate can only be tracked until they leave the UK.

It is possible to get a reciept as proof of posting, but this is only given if the sender requests it. Since this guy is already trying to cut corners and save a negligable amount by sending it surface rate, I somehow doubt he bothered to ask for proof of posting. Even if he did, all it shows is that an item was sent to a certain address on a certain date and is only useful if the sender is trying to claim for a missing item with the Royal Mail. As has been stated already in the thread, the time limit for filing with Paypal has passed so it can't help there.

Without delivery confirmation the USPS won't even listen to you. The numbers on the receipt aren't going to be any help in tracking a package. All the register receipt may prove is that the shipper purchased shipping for something and it may show the destination of the package but again, it won't help in tracking in any way. I don't even thing that the USPS will sell delivery confirmation on an international shipment. They'd only be able to track it until it reached out borders and handed over to your customs dept and wouldn't have any way of monitoring it beyond that.

You see, it's not always the shipper's fault.

Of course you realize, two months is 8 weeks, which might mean it's not even late yet. Hopefully it's just somewhere in the mail system.

I havnt even mentioned UK so I dunno why you bring this up. Im talking about USPS (united states postal service) which have nothing to do with UK. So whats all the talk about UK for?

I havnt mentioned tracking with the packing number either.. I know you cant track the package with this number, but its a proof that you have sent the package and when you have sent the package, probly to who also.

Try reading the full fucking thread before you wade in then. The initial question is about a game shipped from the UK to the US.

Wow, seems like you have serious issues.. Why do you take this tone? Have I offended you or something? Please tell me what it is.

It doesnt matter if the package is sent to UK og Zimbawe, it still have the number on the package.

Because you're an incessant irritating +1er who rarely offers anything of any use and instead makes inane or unhelpful comments in just about every thread I read.

And I can 100% definitively state that there is no number of any sort on the package when sent by surface rate from the Royal Mail. But of course you seem to know better than me despite never having sent a package by such a method.

Once again, I was talking about shipping from USA with USPS, NOT from UK and Royal Mail. But ok, that might be from the Royal Mail as you said. And I did missread, I thought it was shipped from USA instead, not UK.

Inane, whats that? Unhelpful comment in every thread? Where? Are you stalking me and follow every thread I write in? Show me please.
And +1? The flag for siteOP in glftpd. What do that have to do with the forum? Or is it something else, fill me inn please.

Hehe all i can do is laugh mate. Getting so mad for no reason. Your one wierd guy :)

UPDATE:

The details for the auction are no longer available on Ebay's website and the seller is now also "No Longer A Registered User".

Nearly 4 months have passed since I bought the item on Ebay. It's now July and yup...... still no game.

I seriously think that I've been screwed over.

I really hate chalking this one up as a loss.

If you paid with a credit card, you need to contact the credit issuer directly. No amount of time limits you in that case. Only paypal has the 45 day rule. Credit cards are there to protect you. I wish you luck and am sure that a five minute call to the credit card or a short e-mail will get the job done. It's worked for me, I even got an e-check refunded once through this method, even after paypal said I had lost my claim. Paypal tends to refund $$ after a bank/cc comes knocking on their door. Again, good luck.

I sent an item surface mail from the U.S. to Australia. It took over 4 months to get there. My auction stated US only and the buyer bought it anyway. He wasn't too happy about the wait but it did get there. At the time it was sent the post office had indicated it would get there a lot sooner than it did.

This right here says it all for me. I hate to say it but I think you're screwed unless, as someone already said, you can get your credit card company to cancel the payment.
