You can find a Utopia boot disc all over the net that pretty much makes it so you do not need a MOD chip.

That and most rips are self boot now. a mod chip seems pretty silly if you think about it.

I think you would still need a mod chip to play authentic Japanese DC games (unless Utopia Boot Disc takes care of that as well).

I have a boot of ikruga JP ( I own the GC one) and it dosent need a mod chip or a boot disc.

the only reason I could see (which I'm still not sure BTW) why you would need a mod chip is for a very late model Dreamcast. thats when they starting combating the Bootleg abilitys of it.

I could have sworn The DC didn't have any region lock out or am I wrong?

When someone asks about DC modchips it has nothing to do with piracy.. you can't play AUTHENTIC Japanese or European GDrom discs on an unmodded DC except via some form of swap.

That said, I have no idea if the OP's vendor is any good.

Let's clear up some confusion for everyone.

1) Dreamcast is region coded.
2) To play games from a different region than the system's make a boot disc or mod chip is needed.
3) No official games for the Dreamcast that are Japanese will boot on a US/EU/AU system without a mod chip or boot disc, and visa versa.
4) Many homebrew Dreamcast games will come with a bootloader built in, and all commercial Dreamcast games come with the bootloader, so the boot disc/mod chip is unnessary.
5) Homebrew games will boot on a system regardless of region.

There are many boot discs available and they work rather well. I prefer the Code Breaker, but the GameShark, Utopia Boot Disc, and many others work great. Mod chips are available, but there is risk of damage to the system from installation of one, and they are more expensive than a boot disc. However, a mod chip for the Dreamcast insures that one can just pop a game into the system and play without worry.

So in a nutshell, no, I haven't tried those guys for a mod chip. :P

DC-X is a great import unlocker, and the one that I personally use for all of my European and Japanese games. So far, no problems (and I'm probably 100 games in).

You can find the DC-X at the GOAT Store for a good price too, ;)

I put them in. Not a big deal when done properly.

But yes, if you dislike swapping a boot disc in and out of your DC, the region chip is a good option. most of the ones I've done were to pricey JP DC's, like the last one I did, a Regulation 7 DC.

The NA owner could then play his imports and his NA originals boot disc free, which saves some wear and tear on the transport disc grip mechanism too.

On a NA DC, it's likely not worth it, unless you play a lot of import originals.

Haven't got a mod chip because a boot disc works to play imports. You can download the Utopia disc yourself and burn it to CDR. That will handle everything. If you want to pay for one, well get the DC-X i guess. If you really dislike disc swapping then you might want a mod chip but it isn't that much effort and you have to swap discs when you want to change games anyway.

The Dreamcast was always very import friendly. In the UK one of the unofficial magazine but a demo of the DC-X disc on the front of their magazine. Never used the Action Replay parts of it but it loads up import games like a charm :)
