Went by one of the three Starland stores today - and it was closed up. A sign on the window said they were now only open 12-6, and were clearnaceing out all inventory. New games are 30% off, used 40%. Anime type stuff was also discounted some.
For those that done live in the DC area - Starland is the brick-and-morter portion of estarland.com. They are (were) a pretty cool game shop, specializing in old school and import titles. Looks like they are closing all three physical stores. I haven't heard if the web site is closing too.
This pretty much bites, as they were the only store around here that deals in older stuff or imports.

Oh man, that sucks. I went there a few weeks ago, and picked up a few SNES games. Any particular reason to why they are closing down?

That's too bad... but what's happening to the online store? I've had a few $$$ credit value there for some time but nothing that I want to buy recently, I hope they will continue business online.

I hope the website is still going strong because I'll be damned to lose my 70 dollars in trade in credit.

My ex-gf and I used to frequent them often...they had a TON Of stuff, but goddamn man they overcharged insane prices on a lot of stuff. They also had some sort of shrinkwrap fettish. New, used, complete, non, everything eas shrinkwrapped...even individual parts of a system were shrinked before being stuck in a box.
Sad to see it go though, the one was alwasy fun to go to, the other 2 were, eh....

To be honest, I can't recall, this was 4 years ago.
There was one near/next to a...TJ Maxx? That one sucked, especially worker wise.
There was one that was in the sort of corner of a strip mall that had a huge ass parking lot, i think the decor of the mall was brownish roof like. When you walked in, there were magazines at the very front of the store you had to walk around. That one was pretty cool.
I'm completely blanking on the third one.

The annandale Starland is fine. The one that is Closed is The one in Centreville. They've been closed for a while now. Over a month I suspect. It really sucks because I live like only 15 minutes away and I knew one of the guys that worked there, Mike, really well. He left right before the store closed down.
I was actually shocked because I thought they were doing quite well business wise...sad to see a great speciality game shop like that shut its doors so that the mass game whore corporation known as gamestop can keep on growing.

Thanks alot, rhiohki. I asked my brother (who lives in Annandale) about it. He said he heard nothing about it. But what's this about an inventory sale their having? He bought one used game, got the other for 40% off.

Maybe they closed the retail stores to focus on the website more. Atleast I hope that's the reason why.

Ok. I went in and got the scoop. It turns out that they are only closing the Greenbelt store. They aren't closing the Annandale store. They just don't ever answer the phone. When I saw the one store was closed, and the other two stores did not answer the phone ever, I assumed the chain was closing down.
But they are having some sweet deals at the one store. New games 30% off, used 40%. They don't have a huge supply of games though - but some neon signs are there that I might try to buy off them later. Also, they have almost all thier stock of anime still there - the guy working there says they expect to ahve to mark it way down to be able to sell it all. So if you are at all interested in anime (i'm not really) I bet you could get some cheap stuff. Be warned they are only open noon-6pm.
My only find there was getting final fantasy 1+2 for gba for $7.

Its really a shame- I bought Demon's Crest at one of the Starland branches not that long before they closed...
And about the shrink wrapping- I believe they do that because its standard practice in Japan, and from what I've been able to inference from spending too much time at the eStarland warehouse, the owner of the company is Japanese.

I enjoy going to the EStarland Warehouse in Fairfax. Great selection of games, people finding about the place from different means, and the Korean guy and the white guy joking around with others.
