View Full Version : Can somebody with a PSP and Ridge Racer confirm some things?

Ok, I purchased a PSP from Target (as most already know) about a week ago. The first one had a big scratch on the screen, upon exchange the second one had many screen "divots", and finally, the third one looked great.

I have been playing with the unit for the week now, and am wondering on a few things. One is that the UMD door does not seem to close completely flush with the system. If you look at it from the top on the unit, the door is not flush on the left side (opposite of where the hook that catches it is) just a very very tiny bit. The games load fine, and the door opens and closes fine, but it is not perfectly flush. Is this a normal occurance? Maybe I am just a bit anal here, but I just want to make sure it isn't just me.

As for the Ridge Racer question, it actually has to do with the Rally X demo game before you start the actual game. It kind of seems "blurry", but maybe that is not the right description. It's like the walls that you are driving around have the color contrast up too high or something...causing somewhat of a shadow effect. I guess I am really used to playing the game in Mame, and it just does not loook right here in that respect. Is it just me?

Any replies are appreciated. I love this system dearly, and I would absolutely hate to make any kind of exchange.

My UMD door is the same way...never noticed it though, just had to go check it to see.

I have the same problem in Rally X too, I just always figured it was due to the LCD screen technology, so it's not just your PSP!

Whew! Thanks for the reply. I just was completely dreading going back to Target and perhaps getting one that was in worse condition.

I do have to say that production of the unit (quality control that is) really will have to be looked into. The dead pixel thing while annoying, is something that I think is going to happen for some time...as it happens with many LCD devices, including laptops, pda's, DS's and GBA SP's I have purchased. But there really is no reason for screen bubbles (aka divots) or a screen being scratched right upon purchase.

Either way, this really is the best handheld in terms of power, graphics, and overall "wow-ness" I have ever owned. I consider myself pretty lucky that the only unit's flaw on my end is that the UMD is not completely flush by a hair. Guess I should stop worrying now and enjoy the darn thing eh?

One great thing about purchasing from Target is that you have 90 days from the date of purchase to perform an exchange if needed. Gives one some time to really break in the system and discover problems.

The door on my PSP looks the same, so I assume it's just a very minor side effect of the way they have it spring-loaded.

And the LCD isn't as high quality as those used in things like the GBA or DS, and thus you will notice a lot more ghosting due to the poor response time. No, I'm not trying to Sony-bash, that's just the way it is. Heh. The resolution and pixel count are MUCH higher, though.

True. The resolution and pixel density of the PSP screen are mind blowing, but the refresh rate is a bit of a handicap.

Bah, I feel bad that I even posted anything PSP related at all. I'm sure the thread would not have gone this far off topic if it were a question about a Sega CD unit or a Turbografx 16. Maybe I'll wait a year or so before I post anything PSP related again. Thanks to the posters that actually answered my question however.

You shouldn't feel that way, Zektor. You asked interesting questions. If you don't ask them here, where would you ask them?

I'm not a fanboy by any means. But in Imo The DS is pretty much Stands by itself. comparing the PSP and the DS is like saying a banana is better then a avacado. I have both systems and they rock out with there cock out :)

On topic...

The door on my PSP dosen't sit flush at the top most ends of the door. but I'm not sure what you guys mean by ghosting? I haven't seen anything like that.

Ok, I split out all the off-topicness so Zektor can have his topic back. Sorry about the mess Zektor.

Let's keep this on topic this time. :)

To get back on topic:

Ok, seems like the majority of the systems have a UMD door that is not completely flush in this way...from what I have heard here and what others have been telling me in some other forums.

Actually, nobody has told me that their door is perfectly flush with the system yet. If somebody does have one, please let us know.

Thank yah! Good to see you again too :)

No problem, I realize off-topicness is bound to happen...especially with new systems.

As far as I can tell, my UMD door is flush. Is it supposed to stick out or sink in too far? Mines seems like it's lined up.

As far as Rally X goes, there is definitely ghosting going on, but I didnt really notice it until you said something. I dont care, it's still a fun game and I think it's really cool that Namco included it.

Yeah, Rally X is one of my all time favs, and it was a nice bonus to see it in RR. I do hope that the ghosting thing does not occur on upcoming classic arcade compilations. But again, this was a mini bonus game and I'm sure if they (Namco) were to release an actual Namco Museum or the like, that they will take extra precaution to not allow the ghosting.....just the ghosts! :)

Ohh, and as for the door...well mine stucks out when closed. Not much, and almost to the point that if you take a quick look at it it looks flush. But if you look closer, one side opposite from the latch that catches the door is just slightly out. And if you run your finger across it you can feel that it is not completely flush with the system. No big deal tho...everything works fine. I was mainly curious to see if it was just me and a bad unit, so I can take advantage of an exchange while I still have the chance...while they still have them in stock at my local Target.

Well man, I think that if you don't have any dead pixels or air bubbles in the plastic over the screen, you should keep that mofo.

I only own Darkstalkers and Wipeout Pure, and don't find the ghosting noticeable with those games.

No doubt some games will suffer worse than others.

Actually, I think the Ghosting in Rally X is a feature. I dunno. Just me.

I just double-checked the Ridge Racer case. In the corner it says "Play the Arcade Classic Rally X!!! Now with Psychadelic GHOSTING!!!".

LOL

(I'm just kidding around, Jas.)
