OK, so i got a bunch of Sega stuff today. Among the games is Cliffhanger for the SCD.

The darn thing won't play!

When the Sega CD Screen comes up (After i press Start) the console resets, trying and trying to detect a CD.

There is a MAJOR scratch on it- A big "Ring" Scratch. I also can see right through it when i put it up to a light. (That is normal, i know) But in certain areas it looks like something Ate through it. I can't feel any bumps in the CD where these holes are.
Several other Sega CD games that i got today have holes in them (Just like this one) But those games play. (There aren't as many holes in them as in this one..)

Is there a way that i can Repair this CD? Or is this copy Totally dead?

Thanks in advance.

If it has little pockmarks that you can see through, but no visible label-side damage that could have caused it, the disc was probably the victim of poor manufacturing. It may be a situation where water or another foreign material was introduced during creation and subsequently caused the reflective area to degrade.

This sort of thing can happen with Laserdiscs, although for different reasons than CDs. LDs are composed of two halves glued together - if the glue was not formulated correctly it would cause the reflective layer to corrode and introduce "laser rot".

Also, circular scratches are death to CDs since they cause heinous tracking errors. Scratches can be polished out, but reflective-layer defects are terminal.

Thanks for the info.

I'll try using my CD doctor on it.

If that doesn't work, I'll be imitating the Grumbling "Smiley"
