Scratched screen (Game Gear and GBA)

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew a way to get rid of the scratches on GBA and Game Gear screens. The scratches don't really bother me during gameplay, but I'd just like to get my handhelds all spiffy and looking good.

Any advice?

Well, I don't know about in the UAE but here you can get Plastic Scratch Remover (imaginatively named) which is good for getting scratches off plastic. There's probably a similar chemical in the UAE. I think Brasso also works, but don't blame me for any damage done.

Alrighty, I'll look for something similar over here. I am actually visiting the UK in summer, though. x_x

Any advice on chemicals I should particularly stay away from or prefer? (as in checking the ingredients label things)

I've seen GBA and GameGear replacement screens on eBay.. They were only about 4 bucks I think.

What the hell....

Well I was trying to give him a more practical solution, than magical scratch removal. No sense in spending money on chemicals that may or may not remove all the scratches, when you can get a brand new screen for a good price.

Do you think replacing the screens would be hard?

Actually, come to think of it, replacing the whole screen probably wouldn't be worth it (due to the scratches not affecting gameplay).

Replacing a screen on a version 1 GBA (non-SP) is a breeze. Replacement screens come with an adhesive pad to let you lift off the old screen, and then the new one just presses in place. Even if the adhesive pad doesn't work (and it should), it's pretty easy to pop off the old screen from the inside once you've opened the case (if you have the right size tri-wing screwdriver).

I haven't tried to replace an SP screen, since they tend not to get terribly scratched up in the first place.

Yeah, that's the kind of GBA I've got (it's just more comfortable than the SP in my opinion, so I never upgraded. Might get a GBA micro, though :)).

Though, I don't really see the point in replacing the entire screen just for a few scratches (it's the Game Gear that's worse off due to its age).

YES! Thank God, somebody that shares the love of the comfort of the GBA origional over the GBA SP that is way to small for normal human hands! I thought that I was all alone in prefering the GBA over the GBA SP, for any reason, but mostly because of the size and shape that I find a million more times better than the GBA SP. I guess you and I, Fabsy , have proably just gotten used to the larger portable systems that streatch sideway instead of vertically from our many, many hours of playing the GameGear, and for me, the Nomad! I also think that the GBA origional is better in being bigger and streatched sideways because it fells more like a controller on a hame game system. I mean, have you ever played games on a console with a regtangular controller that streatches vertical, or with a square controller that is only like 1.5 inches long on each side?

I have trouble with the extremely small GBA SP, too.

One way you get more minor scratches out, is to get a microfiber cloth, and just rub the screen fairly vigorously. Not too much, but enough to sort of get the plastic to start going back into place. This has worked for me in the past, but I have heard people using it with no success as well.
