View Full Version : Consoles that only offered first party controllers?

Now, I may be wrong on this, but I think there are a few systems out there, where you can only use the original first party controller. At least, in terms of officially released and sold controllers.

Two systems that come to mind are the TurboGrafx-16 by NEC and the Atari Jaguar by Atari.

There of course might be some other systems out there that also only offer controllers from the 1st party company that made the system, but I can only think of the Jaguar and TG-16 off the top of my head.

I know that there are several different controllers for the TG-16/PC Engine/Duo, but I believe that all of them are made by NEC. Of course there might be some arcade stick made by Mas Systems or something like that, but I'm talking about an official controller that you could buy at a store during the original lifespan of NEC's 8 bit supersystem.

As for the Jaguar, the only controller that I know about is the horrible one that comes with the jag. I think there was also some type of arcade stick for it too, but I believe that was made by Atari as well.

Of course if I'm totally wrong on this, go ahead and set me straight on it.

Quickshot made SMS controllers and Beeshu did at least one stick for the TG-16.

There were also infrared pads available for the SMS by a company called WKK (in the UK, I believe).

Here's a couple pages featuring controllers and joysticks you might be interested in:

The Jaguar only "officially" had two versions of the controllers made for it by Atari (neither of which were horrible, by the way, and both of which were fore runners for nearly every other large controller since then.)

There were a few other sticks made for the Jaguar, but none official. There have been at least three people who have made rotary controllers in large quantities. Dark Knight Games "made" the Gravis flight joysticks that were released for the system in a quantity of nearly 10 that were sold.

The most successful Jaguar third party controller was the Jaguar JAMMA Joystick that was manufactured by the GOAT Store ( :D ), and sold around 100 controllers before they were stopped being produced.

Other than the Jaguar, the only other systems that I don't think any third party controllers were made for were early systems where the controllers were attached. The Jaguar was really an oddity.

There was supposed to be a Jaguar joystick released (third party) called the Lapcat, but I've never seen one....

Bally Astrocade.
And for good reason...I like that design, though. Looks cool even if it's not the best calc style pad around.

Fairchild? Heh. What about the Odyssey line (up to the GX-700)?

Really? How? The controllers were hard-wired in.

Or were these for the Intellivision 2 redesign?

Cheetah released a set of joysticks for the SMS based on popular movies:

Bart Simpson joystick
Alien 3 joystick
Batman joystick
Batman Returns joystick
and Terminator joystick

These are, however, extremely hard to find. I believe the Bart Simpson joystick did see some sales in the US, but all of these joysticks are primarily found in Europe (and very rare).

Also, the R-Zone did not have any 3rd party controllers or accessories released for it...but then again, it was completely hardwired.

Any chance anyone has a pic of the bart Simpson controller? I really wanna see that.

The vectrex didn't have any other controllers besides the officials. Up untill current, when the system was out of production.

Couldn't you just use a regular IR remote? Hahaha

Seriously, though, there probably were third party controllers. I'm pretty sure there was a gun accessory released for Mad Dog McKree, too.

Here is an auction for the Bart Simpson joystick:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=19242&item=5978416881&rd=1&ssPageName=WD2V

Cheetah manufactured these joysticks for multiple systems, so there is a chance that the joystick in that auction is not for the SMS (it should have the same "look" as the SMS version, though). The only variant that I have come across is for the NES, with a broader base and added buttons.

Here are some pics of the other movie-based joysticks from Cheetah. These are all pics of the NES version, so the base is a little different. The stick is the same for all versions, though.

Those Cheetah SMS controllers look painful to hold. Not to mention that you'll be choking the character's neck. Well, at least it lets you know how Homer feels. :D
