Is this a legit port, or is it just a hack and port with out permission?

It's not legit in the way of going to EA and asking if he could port this over to the Atari 5200. Call it a hack or port or homebrew or whatever you want. I'm just happy to add it to my collection. :) It's on a custom board too, so it's a little more invloved than some of the other ports of 8-bit software that are out there currently.

It is/was ported, unlike his last effort Castle Crisis (a Warlords clone) that was created from scratch. This is just an 8-bit title reworked to play on the 5200 with it's own special board to handle the larger sized game. It looks great, and it's one more reason to put away the 8-bit forever & just keep the 5200 hooked up. ;)

Is this considered a release or not, and should it go in the DB?

Well it definitely exists. I have one (http://members.cox.net/j_riezinger/images/5200newsoft.jpg). :) Whether the DP guide wishes to add every hack, port, repo, & homebrew, I don't know. But I'd think any release, whether it's considered legit or not, should be added. It would help save confusion later down the road when/if the games are resold.

The guide lists multicarts, yet they were not legit releases. But it's there as a point of reference. If someone spies an SK multi on ebay or somewhere else, checking the guide they can get an idea on what it is, & when/who made it.

What they're classified as I don't know. I'd say MULE is a port. In fact the two newest Mean Hamster releases are no more than ports. But they supposedly have a deal worked out with First Star. So they are lisenced ports. But lisenced or not, both exist as does the new MULE cartridge. And either one could pop back up on ebay some day, so I think both deserve listings in the guide.

The fact that this one is on a custom PCB & is limited to 75 pieces, probably puts it a step above most of the other unlisenced ports that exist. Not anyone can make this one. At least not as easily as the previous 8bit ports that have come out like Spy Hunter, Donkey Kongs, Demon Attack, etc. Bryan went to alot of effort to bring this thing out.

The only problem with the guide right now, is that it only lists US Releases & Homebrews. So any hack or port gets left out most of the time. I'd like to see the homebrew section expanded to include all hacks & ports, & repos of protos that are known to exist in cart form. Right now most of the repos that have come out are listed under the prototype entry, just as a short verbage, but I wish they were listed as part of the homebrews since they are of a recent nature. Most people searching/browsing the guide, or even checking the paper version are probably not gonna notice all the releases, when they don't have their own listing.

Makes sense, Joe you'll have to add this to the database.
