In order to bolster sales of the tepid UMD movie market, Sony has apparently allowed a whole new genre of media to reach their PSP.Glay'z is proud to announce on their official website that five of their productions will be avaiable on UMD videos next july.
Oh god...how did I see this one coming? LOL

I believe that Playboy has plans to do this with their magizines/photo's here in the US as well. It's also a great way for sony to get media attention, and it opens up the PSP as more than just a gaming system to a different audience.
Keep in mind that the PSP is viewed as more of an adults console, compared to the gameboy. This would never had happened on a Nintendo console.

Oh dear .. I can see some very unhappy repair technicians in Gamestop in months to come (no pun intended).
Technician: So, what did you say was wrong with it?
Dirty Mac Man: Um ... the d-pad is sticking ...

A minority of videophiles claim that VHS triumphed over Beta in the Format Wars of the '80s because porn was more readily available on VHS, so it's heartening to see Sony embracing UMD smut.

One of those videos is a loli movie, and it's uncensored. How strangely erotic. I read the story on IGN.com about it. In fact, three out of the first five movies will be uncensored. I heard they lifted the censorship on porn over in Japan, and now all porn is slowly becoming uncensored. THERE IS A GOD!!!

you'll have to remember a few things: sony hasn't actually put their name on these, so they're sort of like those hentai pc-engine games from games express (only much more, er...live). also, they certainly arent going to be released stateside, but that won't stop those who want 'em. finally, the playboy downloads are super tame compared tio this stuff, lol- it's almost like two different worlds. actually, you can dl some mild pictures and a 30-second clip for free at playboy's site now- the 'good" stuff you have to pay for.
being that this stuff isn't going to be so widely available (you won't see retail stores carrying playboy umd's i'd imagine), it's a lot less of a shocking thing to get pissed off about if you're so inclined. people who want porn are gonna find a way to get it, and people who make porn are gonna find a way to take advantage of any new format they can.

Yes... except that Sony is the only people that can make things in the format as far as I know, so if they are coming out in UMD format, the company has to be paying royalties to someone...

The rules (aka "the kewpie doll/mosaic") still apply, but they are allowing a little bit more to be seen--depending on the medium that is being used. PC games, for example, are still mosiac in their Japanese versions.
I agree with the above, SCEA is not going to allow these to come out in the US (who'd sell them here anyway? Wal-mart? EBgames? HA!).

I don't get the point anyway about UMD movies, I will never pay twice for the same movie. So I cant't see there will be a big market for UMD movies.
Cause why would you pay again for a movie you have aready on DVD. I really thig the whle idea of UMD movies will be commecrial failure, just like the old atrac-only music players from Sony. But I'm afraid they didn't learn from that.

you're completely missing the point of UMD movies. sony KNOWS people like you or me won't buy them- they also know that there are a lot of people who will. some collectors will want them just to have a library, while folks who aren't savvy enough to buy a duo pro card and dl the software to move DVD movies to their psp will want something to keep them occupied at the airport or on a bus trip. as it is, more companies are doing umd's. fox is releaseng some this summer, and geneon just announced four anime UMD's. i think the real seller will be ffVII: advent children, though. i'm no longer a huge ff fan, but even i'm tempted by this one, lol.
overall, there may not be a HUGE market for UMD flicks but the fact is that there is one should speak for itself. it's like the gba video carts- i thought majesco was crazy to make these, but they continue to sell well enough for the company to keep making them and garner more licenses in the process.

Porn isn't typically sold in your mainstream stores, yet it's still a billion-dollar industry (much of that being video sales and rentals). I will go as far as saying there's definitely a market for porn and actual nudity in games on consoles (and the PSP) in the States. Unfortunately, the console manufacturers and conservative/parent groups would be up in arms.

06-03-2005, 02:06 AM
actually, while the market for pornography is huge, the market for nudity in games is quite a bit smaller. while there are a few diehardheads convinced that seeing nude polygonal characters is the most exciting thing since sliced bread, the fact is it's a niche market at best. even if a developer could come up with a way to get nudity in a game for "story" purposes, i'd be less concerned about "parent's groups" and more concerned about people going out of their way just to spend fifty bucks on a game when they could just buy a dvd for five, or take a shower, shave and hit the real world to meet girls. they don't bite unless you want them to, and as tom cruise says... "they smell nice" LOL
it like we go through this every few years, but one more time: any "adults only" games would (if a game company ever licensed them) have to be sold via some sort of process that insures they come into the right hands... er, so to speak. let's say vivid does titles for the PS3 or PSP- we all agree that they'll be sold either online or in adult video stores, right? in a way, since the majority of mainstream porn is still dvd/video only, actual games (and not custom porn movies for consoles) would be more of a novelty item.
but of course, it'll just take one "kid looking at something they shouldn't" incident before the news shows go crazy. i saw a report last week on the ID policy for M-rated games where some woman made the claim that there were games available on consoles that featured "women being raped", which made me want to throw a brick through the set.
in the end, i agree with tomonobu itagaki (Dead or Alive creator) on this when he said something like people who want to desperately see nude game characters really need to do something more constructive with their time...

As A Collector I feel compeled to buy these as soon as I can. At least that will be the story I tell my wife when she sees them ;)
BTW which one will be the loli one? If I'm not mistaken Loli is underage here in the states correct? I'd really like to avoid that if possiable.

on a personal level this will bar me from having a complete PSP collection.

According to IGN's article at http://psp.ign.com/articles/621/621332p1.html (more work safe than others, but still somewhat unsafe)
July 22: Loli Nanpa 5 (3800 yen, uncensored)
On the publisher's site, I'm pretty sure that movie is the one with the cover that's a collage of pictures. If you look at the screenshots or watch the trailer, you'll see that the girls look young.
Loli isn't child porn. It has girls over 18. They just look younger than 18. That's why IGN said "...we're REALLY hoping that's the case for one of those titles in particular..."

Thanks to video conversion software. Not for personal use but just to show off what the psp can do. ;)

I'm not just talking about sex and nudity in conventional games. I'm also talking about software/games featuring video of real nudity or toplessness (ala Virtua Photo Studio on the Japanese Saturn or for a more modern American example, The Guy Game) or even just swimsuits (the Virtual View stuff on the Japanese PS2). Hey, how about a game where I can take pictures of British Page 3 girls (and also look at pictures and interviews)?
EDIT: Upon further thinking, I guess if someone wanted to get this kind of thing out on the consoles, they could just release a generic DVD that could be played on the PS2 and X-Box as well as regular DVD players (I believe Vivid's already done that).
Back to the PSP porn, if some of it is uncensored, how will they sell it in Japan? Last I checked, that still is illegal. They must plan on getting sales outside of Japan.

People watching porn on the psp isnt something new as when it was released in japan there was a special 3rd party privacy filter that only allowed only you to see the screen if you were directly in front of it.
Only reason i can think for the filter was people watching porn.
Mmm pornstation portable, indeed LOL

hold the music, maestro LOL. given that here in nyc, they're trying to CLOSE as many of these "smut emporiums" as possible (hell, frst they made them carry 40% bad kung-fu movies, now they want to remove them to neighborhoods that don't want them there), i'd imagine anyone trying to find these while on walkabout in some cities would be out of luck. i'd imagine online would be the best bet. you KNOW someone will have a boatload of these on ebay's adult verification pages once they're released... if ebay still has that section...

And the thread is bumped with a creepy comment!
Love how the IGN page is half denials from the staff. "We don't want to know, we won't look, we won't...yadda yadda." Heh, they've even got an age filter up.
As for "loli," well in Japan as elsewhere around the world youthfulness is considered attractive; it's just that there is a huge segment catering to people who like 'em REALLY young. With drawn artwork, you can get away with most anything, so long as you claim the models are over 18. I'm a bit worried how that'd work out with a real model, though.
Well, if Sony's taking the game THIS far, it looks they really are serious about dominating the home entertainment market's ever corner. Wonder if the PS3 will allow UMD playback? That'd seem reasonable.
And on the topic of censorship...man, taking away those censor squares would be depriving every hapless otaku of his cue about what to concentrate on in the picture! How're you supposed to get excited without those? LOL

Yeah, those PSP movies are selling better than you might think. All of the major studios except Warner have announced support, and even some smaller companies like Lions Gate are supporting it was well. It took some of these studios a year or two to support the DVD format.
Never underestimate the willingness of people to buy things over again. Look at all the DVD re-releases that come out. Heck, almost every new DVD I'm going to get this summer is a re-release. To be fair, though, several of those I don't have because I was waiting for a better version or I just never got around to getting, but regardless, they wouldn't keep re-releasing movies if they didn't sell.
That comment about a kid seeing something he shouldn't reminds me of the guy who was arrested for having porn playing in his car where someone near the car could see it. I think they even passed a law somewhere saying you can't have porn playing in your vehicle in public view.
Just out of curiosity, does the PSP have any kind of parental control? You can certainly watch porn on DVD on the PS2 and Xbox, but it can be blocked with parental control.

Warner's boycott probably is due to their pushing a rival format, Mini-DVD (ever see those at Best Buy?).
Amazingly, by the end of May two titles on UMD had sold 100,000 units, compared to the nine months it took their first DVD release to hit that mark.
How many titles are out? Over 70...they definitely have the support from the movie industry they need.

I think it was on this site that I read of a person getting a ticket for watchin porn on his TV dvd system. Getting in trouble for it because passer bys in other cars could see it through the window.
I wonder how long it will take for someone to be siting on a bus, or the train watching a movie, and some kid sees his or her PSP and takes a look over the seat to see what game there playing? "Mommy can you buy me that game!".
Or for the people who feel the need to have there headphones turned up so high that everyone around can hear them.
Oh I can see this is going to cause many problems.

MSNBC/Newsweek just posted an excellent article on PSP porn:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8400691/site/newsweek/
Interesting excerpts:
"After two months on North American shelves, the PSP had sold 1.3 million units, and Sony had shipped 2.97 million more worldwide; Apple’s iPod, by comparison, shipped only 125,000 units in its initial 60 days. Two UMD titles—'House of Flying Daggers' and 'Resident Evil 2,' both released April 19—have each topped 100,000 copies, a mark it took the first DVD 'Air Force One' nine months to hit."
"Earlier this month, a rep for Sony Japan called the forthcoming releases 'utterly undesirable' and insisted his employer 'cannot stop software makers from selling such videos.' All true, perhaps, but he’s only spilling half the beans. It was Sony who shared UMD specifications with GLAY’z and is providing the actual disks. PlayStation’s Seybold could not elaborate on the details of Sony’s arrangements with companies who release films on UMD, but he does acknowledge that Sony controls 'the production of all UMDs.'"
"'Sony must feel that there is a significant audience for hardcore,' says [Michael] Pachter, noting that porn and the PSP share a fan base: 18-to-34-year-old men."

lol, well... the underlying truth is obviously that sony is the only company that has the umd format and can make the discs, porn is big dollars and not having a small percentage of that cash in the japanese market at least (where overall game sales are down) would be like passing up a wad of bills on the street every day on the way to work. they probably didn't count on the story taking on a life of its own. especially here in the states where no company isn't even going to bring these out.
it's like the major corporations that rake in hundreds of millions on hotel and regular cable porn rentals. every few months it makes cable news, but it's not going to stop because someone is whining about how evil it is (i'd love to see what these idiots do in their private lives... er, then again... maybe not.. ewww.)

Either reasonable, or really dumb. The quality of a UMD is considerably less than that of a DVD. It looks great on the 3" PSP screen, but blow that up to 30"+ and I'm guessing it would look really, really bad. Most people aren't smart enough to understand why either, and would probably be pretty pissed off. Maybe I'm wrong and they'd look halfway decent, but I doubt it. Biggest UMD possible is 1.8GB I believe, vs. ~9GB for DVDs...
