As you can see in the 2nd pic, the monitor is tinted purplish at the left side (actually I noticed the same thing on the right, but not as big and much less noticable) Is this something that could've been caused during shipping and will right itself after some time? If not, can I fix it?

Also what should I use to clean off the tougher marks and stains?

Thanks.

A good degaussing can't hurt, and it could easily need a cap kit.

I'm not sure on all candy cabs, but mine (Egret) has a giant degauss button right inside the coin door. After transporting it from NYC, I had a similar issue and a single press of the degauss fixed it.

I didn't really look around in the coin door yet, I looked in where the test and service buttons are and didn't see it there. Hopefully it's somewhere else.

How tough is it to install a cap kit. I'm kinda slow. :)

Besides this issue, this cab is really sweet.

Well, cap kits require soldering, so you'll need that ability. If you can desolder components and solder in new ones, you can install a cap kit.

Looking at the pic more closely, it sure looks like a degauss issue. Localized color issues like that are usually magnetization of the tube. If you don't have a degauss button, it can be done manually with a large magnet (hell, I've read of people doing it with a power drill).

Well I've only soldered on a new on/off switch for a supergun before, and my hand was shaky as hell. LOL

Is there a guide online to degaussing a monitor without the button?

Doing a quick search, I found this:
http://www.woil.ws/fixmonitor/

There's also mention of using a soldering iron to degauss in there, which may be of use as well.

Admittedly, I doubt the monitor needs a cap kit. Candy cabs still have relatively new monitors in them and they (and their components) are of fairly high quality. Before messing with a cap kit, I'd definitely go the degauss route.

Oh, I definately want to degauss before I do anything else.

Hopefully it'll fix things.

I can't wait to get everything set to put Third Strike in this thing.

A quick synopsis of the process:

Get a powerful magnet, wave it in front of the screen in an outward spiral. Repeat as necessary until all of the magnetization is clear.

Obviously, find a better explanation, but that's the real gist.

EDIT: Use this guide (http://slot-tech-ftp.serveftp.com:8080/technical_department/monitors/degaussing%20coils/degcoils.htm).

Randy Fromm's teaching materials are the best out there, I own nearly the whole set and it is where I learned 95% of my arcade/electronics repair.

Oh, any recommedations on what to use to clean this thing?

Clean what on it?

Seems like black marks/dirt/grime.

What it is exactly, I dunno.

No, I mean what part of the cab? The outside, the inside, the monitor itself?

Supposedly, you can just take the chassis off, hose the tube down, and put the chassis in the dishwasher. I don't have enough faith to do it, but I know reliable arcade guys who say they have done it.

Peale, want to chime in on this? You know more than I do about PCB cleaning.

Did I hear my name? (speak and he shall appear!)

Washing PCBs is pretty easy. I like to hose mine down in the sink with the sprayer. Then spray with some kind of degreaser, let it sit for a couple minutes. Then hose it down again. If there is any grime left sitting take a soft brush of some type (toothbrush) and wipe it away. Make sure to rinse very well.

Take a hairdryer and blow as much water off the board as possible. In fact, before doing this you may want to rinse the board with distilled water. You don't want minerals on your parts!

Heat your oven to 150 degrees, then turn it off. Put the board in the oven (make sure to NOT touch the board or any wires to the heating elemets) and walk away. Come back in three hours and remove your dry, clean board.

I don't think my oven will even do 150 degrees... the digital controls don't go that low.

The outside of the cab, and the viewing area of the monitor.

My PCB's are clean enough.

Oh, windex or something similar.

buttasuperb
06-03-2005, 03:55 PM
Ok, anything that doesn't come off with windex, would it be ok to use goo be gone on the monitor?

chadtower

Your monitor screen is glass. It shouldn't HAVE anything on it that won't come off with windex.

buttasuperb
06-03-2005, 04:25 PM
Well there's something that wouldn't come off with windex. It looks like it's not a scratch or anything like that, but maybe it is. It's annoying that's for sure.

Well, 200 then. If yours is digital you should have the ability to see the temperature inside the oven. At least, that's the way it's been on the digital temp gauges I've seen. When it gets to ~150, shut it off.

chadtower
06-04-2005, 08:17 PM
Nope, doesn't work that way. I set it to 300, and it beeps when it's done preheating. There is no gauge to tell me what the temperature actually is. Damn Kenmore and their one click stuff.

Peale
06-05-2005, 10:16 PM
If you can set it to 200, then do so. It's not a far stretch from 150, and won't hurt anything.

If not...get an external thermometer and keep checking as it heats up, turn it off when it reaches the right temperature.

I need a molex to connect to the empty one in the pic to hook up the kick buttons.

Does anyone sell this already wired up?

chadtower
06-07-2005, 04:28 PM
I'm sure someone does, you're looking for the kick harness for whatever game is in there. Try RGVAM or RGVAC, google for vendors, etc. If not, you can make your own by ordering the corresponding connector from Molex.

buttasuperb
06-07-2005, 04:49 PM
Yea, it's for a cps2/3 kick harness. The actual kick harness is already wired up and connected to the motherboard, just need to get the buttons connected off the molex.

What is RGVAM and RGVAC?

well the degaussing coil did the trick for the monitor, just need to get these kick buttons working
