I see that they have both super mario world and yoshi's island for the gba. I'd like to know are these ports of the snes games of the same name or are they some kind of new versions?

No, they are pretty much the SNES games. A few tweaks and small additions, but essentially the same.

SMB3 on GBA though has e-Reader support and you can add new items and levels to the game with the cards that were available.
