View Full Version : N64 Game Case Project - We Need Your Box Art Scans!

Over at cheapassgamer.com an N64 box cover project was started and I was hoping there would be some people from here who would be willing to help out. The project's home is now at http://www.thecoverproject.net/
The objective is to create affordable cases that display original box art for N64 games. There are "official" n64 cases by Nintendo that can be found on eBay or amazon, but these cases often sell for more than the N64 games themselves. Here's the amazon link to see the official ones, http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004YV84/qid=1118193295/sr=8-6/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i6_xgl63/104-5725316-7739924?v=glance&s=videogames&n=507846
Also, with the official cases (and other storing units) you cannot easily see what game is in the case without pulling it off the shelf or out of the unit. With the cases that we're using from mediashelving.com, you can once you add the box art.
So how are we making afforadble cases with original box art....
1 - We're buying the full sleeve cases from here http://www.mediashelving.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=W&Product_Code=USCG&Category_Code=VHS. They sell in 100 packs, so people who buy them are selling them off to others who only need a few. The cases (after s/h) cost about .55-.60 a piece. NOTE: The instruction booklet fits in this case as well, although it is a tight squeeze.
2 - http://www.thecoverproject.net/
We only need the Front, Back, and Top Spine - all at 300DPI
3 - Then someone will fix the raw scan and re-post it for it to be printed on legal paper. After it's cut it will fit perfectly into the sleeve and the end result should look something like this. http://img103.echo.cx/img103/1981/covers28rq.jpg
I really hope some more people will jump on this project, there seems to be quite a bit of interest in it over there, but we're just lacking people with boxes and scanners (and who are willing to help). Status can be checked at the forums on http://www.thecoverproject.net/
Here is the link for the ongoing post on cheapassgamer, http://cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50941&page=1&pp=20 There is a slight modification to the spine art (to prevent duplicate logos), but you don't need to worry about that. If you scan in the images someone else will fix them (if you're savy enough you can read the OP and fix it yourself though).

My guess would be they don't have the box to the game? I guess you could go on a hunt for a complete copy of the game or try and buy the original box off somebody... but I think this route might be cheaper for those who aren't hardcore collectors. It looks like these would protect the game alot better too.

Yep, that's why. I would assume most hardcore gamers would want to keep their boxes in pristine condition - so this would also be an alternative for them (and just keep the real boxes in storage or something).
Any scan will help though, even if you aren't going to buy a case and print one up for yourself.

We are only scanning them at 300dpi, so basically any scanner made in the last 10 years should have this capability.
We're kind of drying up on box scans so we could use some more help. Thanks,

Ah, this is cool! It's also something I could definately use, since most of my N64 and SNES boxes were lost in The Great Move of '01.
Probably wouldn't put ALL of my N64 games in such cases, but ones that are special to me (such as Mario 64 and Star Fox)
This will require a bit more research... but I'm stoked. :D

Finals are half over. Once I get them over with, I will start to contribute to the project. One thing I wanted to know was, is there something that secures the manual inside the box, or does it just loosely sit there?

It just sits there loosely so when you open the case the booklet is just laying on the cart. I wonder if there is somet type of non-harmful adhesive that we could put on the back of the book and the plastic case that we could remove anytime (to view book or pemanently) w/o hurting the paper or anything, hmmm.
The game also isn't "clipped" in. It just has the corners surrounded by plastic so that it sits perfectly in place. There is probably about 1mm of space between the top of the cart and the plastic so when the case is closed if you shake the case you can hear something is in there (similar to a vhs case).
Good luck on your finals!

Another option for finding those game cases is rental stores. Many rental stores used those exact cases to store SNES and N64 games. I found a lot of 20 for $3. Might be worth a try since SNES and 64 rentals probably aren't flying off the shelf.

hey you pikachu
south park: chefs luv shack
Armorines project swarm
i can get them to ya either tonight or tomorrow.
Edit: okay, i just finished scanning them. i'm gonna touch them up and then send e'm (i'm not gonna try to crop them or change the logo, i'll leave that to you guys, i would prob. mess it up) i don't have a clue how we could fit the giant hey you pikachu box scans onto the spine of one o' those cases, though. :/
Edit2: i just uploaded the front, back, and top for those three games. those are all my boxes, good luck finding the rest!

Thanks SuperNES. I'm glad to see that my guess that some hardcore collectors (ones who want to keep boxes in pristine condition) is true.
If anyone is scared about the scanning time, you should know that at 300dpi it finishes scanning really quick. Uploading does take some time, but you can do anything when you're doing that. Thank you again to everyone that's helped so far =)

Btw which "side" of the box do you want? You get front and back, but which side part gets scanned? If you are looking at the front of the box... is it the top or the bottom?

The top side with the Name of the game on it.

He's correct. We are trying to be consistent and always scan the top spine (if box is facing right side up). The bottom spine and top spine can have different background colors, but we just opted to always do the top =)

I'm a little confused by what you're saying. The top of the original n64 box (long spine part on top) is the spine (on the side) on the mediashelving case. The bottom of the mediashelving case is just plastic, so is the top, and so is the right side - it's basically just like a vhs case.
I believe our logic followed that of the gba case project. It works out quite well I think =)

OK I looked back at everything and now I see what you're saying - ok, sorry about that. Well if the mediashelving case is laying on it's side (so that the cover art is right side up in landscape view), then yes the would be top spine of the box is now on the bottom.
However, I believe just about everyone keeps their cases on a shelf like vhs cases, so the part showing is the spine.
Again, I believe the logic of this followed that of the gba project which seems very successful (over 600 covers scanned in). From my boxes the top spine is the same as the bottom, except the background color is different. Perhaps some boxes don't have the game title written on bottom or contain upc codes or something, that's just a guess.
Or perhaps some gba boxes have different stuff on the bottom and since we're following their logic it just carried over. Either way, I still agree with the top. We want to make this as painless as possible for people helping out & since a lot of the scans are from people who do the gba stuff too - we don't want to confuse them with different guidelines.

Thing is the top side does make sense moreso on the PAL games as the bottom side normally doesn't have the name of the game of it at all.

Yes it can be done for SNES, on cheapassgamer forum there's a thread for snes and snackbar also has a catagory for them.
I'm not sure what the inserts are you're talking about, if you don't mind go ahead and scan one in and maybe someone would like it. Some people do custom covers too, which although I don't have any I think is a neat idea. Regardless I know there's gamers out there who collect artwork so if for nothing else...
And yes this project isn't for everyone since I think some of the authenticity is lost (although someone earlier in this thread I remember stating they liked it because they kept all their boxes hidden and safe and could use these). Regardless, even if you're not going to have any of the plastic cases, your scans would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, thanks a lot for the insight. A lot has been added since I last looked at it and forgot about it. I really wanted to box my N64 games since I'm no longer worried about complete games on that system. Is there a prefered printer paper or suggestions? Also I currently have 76 loose N64 games, is there a way to buy those plastic cases in bulk?
I looked back at the first post and missed the link:

So that $42 pack is what you posted in the first shots and that's with shipping?

That is not with shipping, but they charge freight (and not some crazy handling fee with it - at least it wasn't when i ordered over a year ago) so it should only be a little more. As for paper, I tried numerous types 25% cotton 75% cotton 100% cotton and a few other types that I had ordered at my old job, all looked worse than just regular plain paper. You need legal paper and I highly recommend a laser printer (ink jet will use so much ink, the paper will be soggy, and the quality lower).
Also, there are always people who only want a handful of cases so if you'd like you can sell off your remaining blank cases.
Hope that helps,
Nate

I know it's not much, but someone could easily do 5-7 an hour an that would be 10-14 bucks in an hour. Anyone who is interested let me know and I'll paypal you the cash after they're uploaded. Thanks!
Nate
Dear Nate,
I know this post is very old, but I'd be willing to pay for a scan of Lufia Fortress of Doom in unretouched condition. 300dpi minimum, 600dpi pref.
Lemme know if this is something you could look into?
