I didn't read the entire thread (there's 19 pages) but I was curious of your sell prices were the same, more, or less than those in your DP Guide. Also, does it make it any harder to be impartial when you list a game's rarity and value onlone now that you now make a living buying and selling used games

I would not imangine giveing someone more then half of book for something (and thats bing gen). The guides are a collectors price, if someone wants bbok value for it they should do the work and hunt down a collector to sell it to. Bringging something to a retail store to sell, you know your not going to get top dollar.
I rember back in my days of baseball cards and such, to get half book value from a shop was a good day.
And whos to say joe hasn't been planning this for a while and has slowly been lowering the values in the guides? Only to publish ver 10 with the correct values, after his store is stocked with goodness...jk

Actually I was wondering if the price that he sells his game at in his store were the same as those in the guide, not the price that he puys them for.

of course not (i think), those prices in the book reflect the price you have to pay if you SEARCH for the games. Going to visit the DP store to grab some deals i wouldn't call hunting/searching. I guess in fact he has a standard price on sth like loose snes games except the known valuable games..

Dont know. He do sell the guide in the store tho. So people can read it and see the prices. And if they see that a game is more expencive than the guide they might wonder. On th other hand, many of the prices are out of date.

No, the pricing in the guide and the pricing in the store are two different things, though I often consult our book when I'm not sure on pricing. Remember - the book is a COLLECTOR's guide, it's clearly written in the preface that the values listed are the "lowest possible without insulting another collector" in a trade. My store prices, on the other hand, are FAIR RETAIL values. They're well below eBay but often higher than the book.
You'll just have to come out and see for yourself :) I've had plenty of forum members already stop in and buy piles of stuff, citing the good prices. I'm sure you'll hear about some of the "finds" in the store over time!

The first week at the store has been great - far exceeding my expectations, and it's obvious that word of mouth is getting around.

Let me once again give my 2 cent opinion on the matter. I love Joe's store! Everything I have purchased works great and has exceeded my expectations! I've picked up Atari 2600, SMS (complete in the box, not loose :eek 2: ), and TG-16 (also in the cdrom cases with the books) games that I just love. I feel like the games are worth more than what I paid for them and I can see that, for Joe, it's like saying goodbye to an old friend everytime I take another game with me. I'm not one to go on ebay to hunt for things, so to walk into the store and just pick up some high quality stuff that catches my eye is fantastic. It's like a crack addiction! Once again I feel like I did when I was a kid, everytime I had a buck in my pocket I ran down to the arcade or the store. Anyone who goes to purchase WILL NOT be disapointed!
BTW, Joe, do you do gift cards? :D
I'll tell my relatives that what I want for Christmas!

Was finally in the area and able to stop by the store yesterday. Joe has done an incredible job. The store is absolutely beautiful, quite possibly the coolest game store I have ever had the pleasure of shopping in, and his prices and inventory are excellent. Seriously, did you expect anything less?
I urge everyone who can to go check it out. You simply will not be disappointed. Plus, you get to talk with Joe and any other forum members who happen to be around. I know where I will be getting my games from now on. No more EB/Gamestop for me!
Congratulations Joe!

Thanks for the feedback, folks!
Man am I loving this. It's hard to describe but being there is like sitting in a virtual Digital Press universe. It's been great talking games ALL DAY LONG with people who actually appreciate it. Occasional visits by forum members makes it all the more fun, though I am slowly and deliberately giving the kids who frequent the store a lesson in gaming history. One of the first tournaments I'll be running will be a 2600 Warlords round robin. They'll learn. They'll learn.
To the person who asked: yes, this is my full-time job. The only downside to that right now is that it's JUST me seven days a week. I'm going to hire some part-time help after the holidays, once I have a good grasp on how many people I can afford and how much I can pay out.
To the person who asked: trade-in prices are fair, my start-up values are based on Sean Kelly's store which has been running for over 3 years now. Thank God for Sean, there's no way I'd be running smoothly this quickly without his tutelage and business savvy.
I got my first PSP and DS trade-ins this week, which means I now OWN a DS (truth - I never purchased one for myself), and I've gotten some really cool trade-ins from the locals, including five box-loads of Commodore 64 stuff (over 50 boxed games, boxed monitor, boxed disc drive, etc), stacks of boxed NES games and loads of GBA games which seems to be the local handheld of preference.
The trickiest part so far has been keeping on top of stocking new releases. The urban-themed games have done better than I expected (Bulletproof, GTA, True Crime NY) while the games I really like have not (SSX, Katamari). There are enough collectors nearby to keep at least one of the offbeat titles in (Suikoden Tactics, Digital Devil Saga). It's going to be a learning process to properly stock to my clientele, once again exactly as Sean told me.
I may adjust store hours after the holidays as well. I get very little traffic between opening (11am) and 2pm, while the late afternoon and especially the 6pm-8pm hours are always busy. I'm thinking of shifting from 11-8 to 12-9. I don't mind the quiet early hours, it allows me to get caught up on yesterday's trade-ins - cleaning them up, resurfacing, pricing and stocking.
Well this went on longer than I expected it to but thought some of you might be interested. For myself, it will be interesting to look back at this a year or two from now and remember what it was like when I first opened.
See ya here or see ya at the store!

I check everything at the register, with the exception of really obscure system carts. My overhead cabinets have a variety of systems and the TV's in the store are rigged for all kinds of inputs. I resurface scratched discs (spent a fortune on an industrial brand unit).

Man I wish I could visit your store. Nothing like every system and games for every system in stock or within reach. Joe I never met you but if it's anything like DP-land I'd be in hog heaven. You are a lucky lucky man. I hope your sales are good this Christmas and enough folks to come in and visit your store. It's good to know that a corporation isn't running your fine establishment.

So Joe how was your first Christmas?
Awesome. It's more fun than I imagined it would be, and I've really gotten into discussing games with customers, even the kids, who have clearly different tastes than I do (soccer and gangsta games vs my typically eclectic tastes). The chatter has kept me on top of recent games which I haven't had the time to personally play.
Sales wise we kicked ass here. The store made enough money by the 4th of the month to cover the rent due January 1st, and things got progressively busier as Christmas drew near. I've got a "helper" who does the most vile task of all, disk resurfacing, in exchange for store credit. I hope he doesn't get bored to tears anytime soon because I don't miss that part of the job!
I've been told that January is a pretty decent month for our business, but February through summertime can be very slow. I hope to counter that with the PC LAN center that's going into the back portion of the store. It's "something to do" for the locals even if there are no good new games to play.
Also... the arcade machines have been a tremendous success. What I didn't count on was the laundromat next door - bored people waiting for their clothes to dry off often pop in here to pump a few quarters into the machines.
I still have a lot of adjustments to make but I'm a quick learner. I'm most looking forward to hiring someone to take one day a week from my schedule so I can relax a little and PLAY some. Hopefully that can all happen by February and I'll be back on the forums a little more often.
Happy New Year, all.

First off congrats on your sucessful Christmas season. I have a qeustion out of curiosity. Do you get many younger gamers coming to your store and asking about games that were sorta "before their time?" Like young teens or even preteenagers that ask about atari or nes and want to see what they missed out on?

Liz is supporting the family with her steady job! She's only been at the store a few times. As usual, she's really supportive and has had some great ideas for doing things around here.

Definitely not. Every once in awhile a kid will point to something like the Atari 2600 and say "what's that?" but they're bored halfway through my explanation :)

About the whole LAN thing. There's a place out here called Netzone that basically has a bunch of computers set up, the computers themselves are like windows 2000 and they have counter-strike, diablo 2, etc. It's really fun to go with friends and stuff. Some people also go for internet acess. I don't know just some ideas. I can take pictures of the set up if you want.

Some people are really weird at the LAN place I go to. They do not have WOW at home, so they pay 15 a month + 2 an hour just to play it at the LAN cafe. It must be some game.

Go with your instincts on game selection. Going with 'blockbuster' titles is only going to burn you down the road. Sure, you've got to have a few copies to bring the casual gamer in, but pricing-wise you'll be in trouble.
For reference, Call of Duty 2, True Crime NY, Gun, and another new ActiVision title were $49.99 up to the 24th. 12/26? $29.99. Call of Duty 2 went back up, but the others did not. You probably can't afford to lose $20 per copy of those titles, it adds up quickly.
The 'eclectic' games have a built-in failsafe: major retailers stop ordering them almost immediately. Growlanser Generations, Lunar, Guitar Hero, older DDRs, Steel Battalion, Ace Combat 5 bundle, just about anything Konami, KOEI, or Namco makes that isn't mainstream. All of these games you don't have to worry about pricing cometition on, because EB/GameStop/Wal*Mart/Target only carry them between a week and a month then switch over to used only.
Make it your business to stock things nobody else does. Go out of your way to have one of everything. When you get a guy in the door looking for a Virtual Boy and you've got it, he'll come back for every other oddball thing he's looking for, and he'll come there first.

Right, right. I wasn't saying buy the entire stock of Katamari Damacy, just that concentrating on high-depreciation games isn't necessairly the way to go either.
Especially considering who he is and what kind of gamer knows his name, he should try to have one of everything. No amount of marketing or good will can replace your customer thinking of you as a one stop shop.
Rule of thumb: the rich customers are lazy and vice versa.

Just read through this, and I have to say, well done for making a go of this! Over where I live (Sheffield, UK) there's a huge lack of decent gaming establishments, only the big chains such as GAME and Gamestation. I'd certainly much prefer to visit a shop like yours for my gaming wares :)

I'll be sure to stop in your store probably sometime in the next month. Just a thought, there is an independent game store near me with a lan area, me and my friends used to go their constantly, but they stopped having a server for the lan and their prices and quality of their inventory declines constantly. They were able to bring in people with CS tournaments when they had a Server. When you get your LAN area up and running, try to have a server and run tournaments. Anyways, I hope to stop in there soon. Also, what the store near me at one point was a set of xboxes set up with a system link so you could play 8 (i think) players against each other playing halo 2. They had charged $5-7 an hour depending on the time of day and weekday or weekend. They also offered a discount card similar to eb and gs. Just a few ideas for thought.

Hey Joe I was actually at the store and afterwards i signed up for the forums. I was there with my fiance getting all nostalgic.
I must say the store was very very impressive! And ive reccomended it to family and friends that are into games to go check it out at least once its almost like a museum for video games!
About the Lan thing, i think its an awesome idea and if you need any help as im a systems engineer let me know and of course im offering my help free!
Just to help out is cool enough for me!
PM me and ill stop by the store some time to shoot the breeze without the misses while shes at work lol.

Sadly, that's the case I've had with most younger folks but I've found if you put one in front of them with a truly entertaining game, they'll change their tune.
When we did our "Retro Retro" classic gaming night, we ended up with our biggest turnout with 9 kids 12 and younger attending.
It's pretty special to see young kids having fun with Killer Bees on the O^2 and River Raid on the VCS.
I've got pics and some video up on the greeleycgn.com site if anyone's interested in seeing a 9 year old kicking our collective asses in Combat.

I have a retro gaming store where I live, but they're bunch of rip-offs. The last draw was for Castlevania - Bloodlines (Genesis) for $18 cart only! I was in the hurry, so I purchase it. This game reminds me often that the store is full of rip-offs! They were selling Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (Dreamcast) used for $30! It sad because the store has a huge collection of VCS, NES, SNES, Genesis, PSX, and current-gen software. :(

Whoa, just noticed that this thread popped up again so I thought I'd throw in a quick update!
Sales have been tremendous - I expected a really good month of December and January is going just as well so far. I sell just about equal quantities of new stuff and old stuff. College students, adults and to a smaller degree high schoolers have become fairly regular NES, SNES and Genesis game purchasers (with the occasional Dreamcaster in there). The middle school contingent feeds regularly on the PS2, XBox, GameCube, PSP and DS.
From what I've seen, PS2 sells twice as well as XBox and GameCube, and XBox and GameCube are about equal in popularity. PSP is about 2/3 of the new handheld game sales.
This town is a soccer town. I always wondered who bought all this FIFA stuff. Clifton, a highly diverse ethnic community, is certainly part of that buying group. I can hardly keep soccer games in stock.
Somewhere in this forum are photos from our first store tournament. The next tournament is on the 27th (Super Smash Bros Melee, by popular request).
One of our forum members, Schenley, is doing the LAN Center/PC Gaming Room installation towards the end of this month. The store will have this feature ready sometime in mid-February. Word is out at the local high school where a place that used to do this full time closed down about a year ago.
I'm hiring my first two employees on Feb 1st. One of 'em will be an organizer/assistant/cleaner for an hour a day, the other will be my backup so I'll finally get a day or two off every week.
The return of NAVA starts on Saturday! I'm pretty excited about getting the gang back together.
Updated NAVA page: http://www.digitpress.com/nava.htm
Updated Store page: http://www.digitpress.com/store
That's it for now! Thanks again to those of you who have made the trip out to the store and to the new members who have joined the forums AFTER going to the store. Hope to see ya's all again at NAVA.

You have an amazing store, Joe! It was COMPLETELY worth the 16-hour round trip to visit and to poke through your wares. Congrats on an awesome layout, great selection, and - dare I say it - surprisingly low prices!
It's a nine hour drive according to Mapquest. LOL Hard to justify that just to shop
Sissy.

This is absolutely incredible.
I particularly like the panels that you've used for the walls - it really reminded me of that old look that Babbages had - really a nice touch.
The panels remind me of Funcoland back in the day actually.

When I first heard a game store opened up where the outer limits used to be, i was afraid it would suffer the same fate because of obnoxiously high prices. dp doesn't have that issue, and it's an awesome store. hope it lasts a long, long time.

I believe those were there from before Joe bought the store.

I second and third the internet vote. If you have means to do it, put some stuff up for sale for the Northwest Washington state folks. If I ever come to New York, I am checking out your store.

Believe me, I can relate. I'm a young preteen interested in classic games. When I tried to get my friends interested though, well it just won't happen. It's sad to see young kids just pass these awe inspiring systems by and leave them. For god sakes, I play tons of classic games. And anyways Joe, that's great that your store has been a huge success. Hey, I'm on the East coast, so maybe I can make it to NJ.
Damn. "Preteen"? This kid writes better than 90% of the people on the net.
Hey, thanks man. That's nice of you to say that. Anyways, I want an online store too. That would be fabulous.

Store=awesome. I'm so glad its only 20 min from my house. I need to bring my SNES list to the store next time, because I'm trying to build my collection. Even my mom likes it because of the DVDs. The museum in the back was really cool too!
