I've read a few things about this i.e. like getting a Utopia boot disc or something like that, however, I got some PAL and a few Japanese Dreamcast games and I'd like to be able to play them and was wondering if somebody could point me in the right direction.
Thanks a lot
Mark

You can download the Utopia boot-disk from various places and that offers decent, but not full compatibility.
To play everything, your best bet is the DC-X disc (note: not the CD-X disc, that's different). You might want to try DP member Nick - I got one from him a while back, and he still had a few for sale at a great price in this (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=41039&highlight=dcx) thread last time it was updated.

Well, yes, that would work, but he specifically mentioned that he wanted to play JP games on a US system.

Anyways, Doesn't the Gameshark CDX work as a boot disc? I think I recall reading that somewhere...[/i]

Yeah, it works, though all these boot disks listed don't mean shit if you have an older model Dreamcast that doesn't play CDs.

if you don't want to be bothered with boot disc get pre-mod'd DC from lik-sang or get the chip and do it yourself...

I use the Cheats 'n' Codes disc with my N.A. DC. While the only DC JP imports I have are Ikaruga, Zero Gunner 2 and Twinkle Star Sprites, it boots them up quite competently. Haven't tried any PAL imports.

I have a NA DC made in September 2000. I just bought a PAL copy of Shenmue II, and I have a Gameshark Lite. (It says it is a CDX) Gameshark Lite boots up, and it will play regular NTSC games, but it wont boot up Shenmue II. Am I doing something wrong, or does Shenmue II not work with Gameshark?

Shenmue II doesn't work with CDX/Gameshark. DC-X plays it fine.

I know for a fact that that the DC Utopia doesn't play BlackMatrix A/D or Sakura Taisen 3. SO if you're into rpg's (and have the patience to use a translation guide) get a mod chip or a JP dc.

Lately I've been unable to find a mod chip (mines died). so I got a DC from Japangamestock, and to top it off they packed in JP newspaper which was quite amusing.

I spoke to the rep from NCSX he or she (dont' remmeber now) that the chips they used to burn the ROMS for DC Mod chips were no longer available. Liksang has also run out.

Getting a DC from JP was reasonable enough.

I have a Gameshark for my DC and it plays both pal and Jap without any problems. I dont have many pal games (Just Rez) but of the 7 import games they all work.
