I recently heard someone say, "historically speaking if you look at the life of a console, the biggest games to come out for a system late in it's life cycle are usually about 8 times larger that the first games."
I'm curious if that's really true? Let's see...
CONSOLE SMALLEST LARGEST factor
Atari2600 2 kilobytes 32 kilobytes 16x
NintendoES 32 kilobytes 512 kilobytes 16x
SuperNES 256 kilobytes 4 megabytes 16x
Nintendo64 8 megabytes 64 megabytes 8x
Playstation1 700MB(1CD) 2800MB(4CDs) 4x
SegaMS 32 kilobytes 512 kilobytes 16x
Genesis 256 kilobytes 4 megabytes 16x
Saturn ??? ???
DreamCast ??? ???
I filled in the numbers as best I could. If you see any errors, please let me know.

The largest games I listed above were Final Fantasy 3 (NES/Famicon), Chrono Trigger (SuperNES), and Final Fantasy 9 (PS1)... all made by Squaresoft. Coincidence? I think not. :lol
Any bets that Final Fantasy 12 will be the PS2's largest game? I'm sure I'd win that one. It must be because Square stuffs so much story and graphics into their RPGs.
I think Action 52 was the largest legit NES game

That's a bit of a grey area. if you mean legit as in not pirated, yeah. But it's not licensed.
And there's no way that all single disc PSX game uses full 700MB, some could have as little as 10 MB or so as I don't have access to complete list of ripped PSX game so I have no way knowing what's the smallest and biggest.

I think the largest N64 game was Resident Evil 2, at like 256 MB. Didn't I hear this somewhere?

64 megabytes. They squeezed 15 minutes of PS1 movies into only 25 megabytes! Amazing. Of course, the quality was compromised: 160x100 resolution at only 15 frames per second. Still, the movies were there and that's all that really matters.
The last 15 minute movie I downloaded was 160x100 resolution Zelda: Preview and it took ~125 megabytes. The RE2 programmers managed the same feat, but with only 1/5 as much space.

I think the 2 Zeldas and DK used a 256MB cart, but didn't use all the available memory.

ehm chrono trigger isn't the biggest snes game, it's tales of phantasia or star ocean (not sure about that, don't have them on my hd right now)
