if you walked onto the gaming scene with no knowledge of system/game releases and could only associate games with the art/theme within them, which would you associate most with being from the 80s?

obvious example: vice city

I think the original poster meant games that are in stores right now.

But heck, I saw a copy of CV Adventure at a store recently. Oddly, I feel that Castlevania III is an 80s game, but CV Adventure (which is pretty bad in many ways) doesn't really feel like one to me, dunno why (both came out in '89). Guess I just associate the GB with the 90s.

Rollergames for the NES by Ultra (you ain't foolin me Konami ASDF!!!) has quite an 80's vibe to it. And the most obvious thing is the roller skates. That was a big thing in the late 80's. Plus there weren't any hip and cool roller blades invented just yet.

NARC. The game is a virtual tribute to the rise of the new right and the moral majority.

Good call.

Double Dragon: The character designs are gold.

Bad Dudes: Ronald Reagan has been kidnapped by ninjas? That's like the '80s in a nutshell.

Space Harrier: If video games were new wave videos...

Frankie Goes To Hollywood (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=971): Very unique game based on the group Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Who can forget the Reagan / Gorbachev spitting minigame?

Split Personalities (http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=2426): Puzzle game where you try to reassemble pictures of Ronald Reagan, Margret Thatcher, Clive Sinclair, etc.

Seaside Special: Collect radioactive algae at the beach then use it to kill the politicians at 10 Downing Street.

I remember playing a great strategy/war game on my dear old Amiga called...something like Nuclear War...anyone remember this? You could pick any of the major political heads during the 80s and wage nuclear warfare. And it was great fun!!!

robotriot

That's A-Team, (http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=860)which was never released. At game over, it even plays the A-Team theme song!

IntvGene

There's the Avoid the Noid game for the PC (although it's closer to the late 80's)

I'd put the Kool-Aid games (2600, INTV) in this category too.

The Cabbage Patch Kids and Smurf games also apply (CV).

Also, He-man: Masters of the Universe (INTV)

There must be tons more licensed games to add (Transformers, Thundercats, etc.)

Either Labyrinth. Any game with a digitalized David Bowie just screams 80's.

Or even Micheal Jackson's Moon Walker.

Well everybody knows that ninjas were popular in the 80ies so lets just combine them with some other popular things like a BMX (and maybe a skateboard as well), add it all together and we get:

http://62.168.142.47/~lemon/covers/full/bmx_ninja.jpg

BMX already taken? Oh well just use a scooter instead, I'm sure ninjas use those all the time:

This game is also known as Street Beat.

For some 80es nostalgia here is a site about the rise and fall of the ghettoblaster / boombox (http://pocketcalculatorshow.com/boombox).
