How does one search through the records of auctions that have occured on ebay over the past several years? Obviously the completed item search only returns the past several months.

i dont think it goes back that far. b/c i know if you try and go back to items from years ago in your feedback it doesnt work. i think there is a 60 or 90 day window after the auction ends to view it otherwise its deleted from their system. hope that helps:)
I guess I'm a little confused because a lot of people will state in their auction that Item X has never before been offered on ebay. How can they know for certain? Are they just full of bull?

It's just bull. Although I use it myself as I check almost all the eBay sites twice a week if to find some rarities. It should mean that the game is only sold once a while. It also can be like rare or very rare in item descriptions, you even see the nes-version of mario/Duck Hunt on eBay with the term rare.
Just try to get a picture of the market, and you can decided for yourself if something is rare or not. The only person who can decided what a items is worth is you (at least for what your willing to pay for it)
