I'm just wondering when we will see homebrew NES and Genesis carts (not just roms for emus)? Or why we haven't seen them?

Probably because actual phsyical carts cost to manufacture. If someone were to make an NES or other console game, odds are they'd have a hard time finding a way to manufacture it. They'd be better selling it on a CD-R with free emulators included (or at least references to 'em) for playing on computers.

I would imagine they would take the route other homebrew carts have taken, and simply reuse old carts.

Genesis sports games, SMB/ DH carts. Pennies each.

probably has something to do with the licensing/anti-theft crud. There are several hacked versions of Zelda 1 out there but no one is putting them on carts.

In fact the only NES games I've seen were Earthbound "prototype" *snicker* Ebay auctions.

Same with the Snes, there is a really good SMW re-work I'd love to have on a cart but... nothing..

There are some genesis homebrews...mostly the CENSOR demos. Some of them are impressive.

Also, some unreleased (but finished) games ARE available for the system. Like Zero Tolerance 2, another helicopter name which name i dont recall now, and some others!

Oh..theres a mario game too..it must be a bootleg, and its OK...

Isn't there some talk of a release of Beggar Prince for the Genny as well? There should be a thread around here for it. That's a good start I'd say. Assuming it does get a release.

I remember hearing something about an actual NES G.T.A. game in the process of being homebrewed, but i haven't found an update on that for a while now...

There's at least one carted NES homebrew I'm aware of... Solar Wars by Chris Covell. He's got a site with directions for how to make it.

Homemade carts pop up on ebay all the time, usually just rom translations though. It just costs too much and takes WAY too much time from what I've heard to make ONE of these, let alone enough to actually sell...

An official homebrew for the NES is being sold in about a month. It is called the "Strangulation Games Multicart", and it contains Solar Wars (http://www.zyx.com/chrisc/solarwars.html) and other games. There is also a new flash cart being released for the NES called "Squeedo". Also, there is a new Genesis game being released this year, cart, box, and all:

if there were guides and dev kits i think there would be more home brew games

ive only found an atari dev kit with gives me the ability to put a programed ROM chip into the system to test the game - it also comes with a programing manual (or guide) and theres also plenty info out on the net

-- the guys that made the atari dev kit also were making ones for the nes ,5200 and some other systems

but the NES one in particular was being stoped by nintendo the company - i talked to the guy that made them and he said he doesent know why but nintendo is giveing them problems releasing it to the public

i also think they had plans for many other systems as well

im certainly interesd in taking a shot at home brews for the nes , sms,and genny - but i woul need some kind of dev kit and programing info - some kind of guide that would help me quickly familiarize my self with the system

im sure there are many more out there with the same predicament

as time goes on i think there would be more avaiable to people but interest in home brew may also die down

if im worng - somebody plese say so and point me in the right direction for the information - ive looked and only come up with that very small garage company making dev kits witch has trouble releaseing them

It's not a homebrew, and it's not new. Still good, but nothing that meets the reqs of the topic ;)

Its all a matter of getting motivated to actually program and build a homebrew.

Genesis games I do wonder about, but nes has never been a big mystery to me. I always figured it was because it's such a pain in the ass to learn the ins and outs of the different mappers and to find copies of the carts that have them to recycle (and expensive).

I'm sure it also has a LOT to do with the same reason Atari homebrews are declining. The people making them are getting told to cease and decist, intellectual property, and all that crap. If that GTA game that was redone for the NES was put and a cart and even sold AT COST with NO profit, he would get shut down quicker than a 73 year old prostitute on the white house lawn.

Atari homebrews aren't declining. If anything they're getting more numerous.

The only "cease and desist" is only for Atari intellectual properties, which, you know, tend to already be on atari systems anyway.

Sega would be quite the viable option, considering they lost that battle vs accolade (in 90?)

GNU compilers/assemblers, all the parts are pretty much off the shelf. The biggest problem is that it would take a lot more effort to actually make a game that powerful.

It's called Grand Theftendo. (http://www.grandtheftendo.com/)
I've also heard on VGWiz's (http://www.vgwiz.com/) message boards that they are working on an NES flash card, and that they've run in to a little troble with Nintendo.
Personally, I think an NES homebrew could sell well. The user base is larger than the Atari scene, especially if you count Japan.

YEA VGwiz - that was one of the names i forgot

i saw the nes one they had last year - the guy that made explained to me that he couldnt sell it becasue nintendo was giving them problems

some one mentioned that soemm of the tools nescesary for the genesis are off the shelf -- which items are you talking about? and is there also a programing guide - something simple - explaining the adressing and some of the other related nuianses (sp i think)

edit: for nes too ?

I'm still working hard on Grand Theftendo. Although I don't have as much time to work on it as I used to since work keeps me pretty busy. I haven't bothered to update the site in a while, as I don't really feel like saying "I added this and that" every day... I prefer major updates... I'd rather spend my free time on the game itself.

Making NES carts are more difficult than Genesis, Atari, GB, etc. because of their mappers and lockout chips. For example, you couldn't just open an SMB/DH, replace the ROMs and run GTN.

Originally planned to be a remake of GTA3 on the NES, due to legal reasons, I decided to make it an original game (though still a GTA clone). GTN won't be any more of an infringement on GTA than the game "Payback"... as all the content and characters will be original. Payback had no legal issues even though the untrained eye/casual gamer would not see a difference between that and GTA1... and it was released officially and commercially for GBA (as well as other platforms). The Payback landscaping was all like GTA1, the sound effects, the phones/missions, style, etc. It even had "Freedom City" as "Liberty City", and the two others. Heh! That being said, GTN _may_ be put on cartridges when it's done. However, I've read posts about people planning to make carts of it, which is something I'd greatly frown upon. I mean, if you made a game, put years into it, only to have other people selling it and making profit? It was never about money and I've done it for the sake of fun, but still... Anyway, it's still too early to make plans for getting the carts made though.
