View Full Version : Wasn't NES Zelda promoted as "neverending"?

Now that I'm digging into my brain for the "old days", I remembered something else:

When Legend of Zelda was being promoted, just prior to release, I distinctly remember it being descirbed as a "neverending" or "endless" adventure. I was young enough to not think critically about it, and that was one of the selling points I presented to my parents as justification for it being a christmas gift.

I certainly wasn't disappointed by the game, but I was slightly sad to see that the game wasn't really endless, just cyclical on a larger scale that I was used to.

Do you remember this?

I think by "neverending" the promoters basically ment that you could play the game over and over again and never get bored of it.

I thought it was neverending because it rearranges the dungeons when you start again after beating it. Does it do it more than once?

I don't think you can keep playing after the Second Quest. As a kid, that's as far as I got, and by the time I beat the second quest I was SO sick of the game I did'nt touch it for a long time. :) Can you keep going after the Second Quest?

This is outta left field, but didn't The Neverending Story - movie come out about that time? Doubt it has a thing to do with Zelda, of course.

You can keep playing after the second quest, but the third time through is the same (but your save file saves your death count)

Maybe they were refering to the fact that Nintendo is never going to end milk this franchise? An endless number of sequels???

Yeah, kind of like Final Fantasy was supposed to be the "final" fantasy yet Square has milked more from that franchise than any other on the planet.

Didn't they actually think that, though, as in, wasn't the company going under when Final Fantasy came out? I may have just made that up, but I seem to recall reading that somewhere...

I think it was originally intended to be never ending like Atari's Adventure (by randomly placing items/dungeons each game) but I guess they couldn't iron out all the wrinkles in time for release. It would have been damn sweet though, and the box does say "Experience the Challenge of Endless Adventure!"
