i recently started collecting famicom carts, currently collection stands at 32 (not bad for three weeks and starting with only one game)

as i mainly collect nes carts i would like to know some japanese only games which are worthy of my funds, or games which are slightly different to their nes counterparts alas contra is a certainty because of the cut-scenes and map display

so if you have any ideas pass them my way

Cocorun
Gradius II

Mother
Sweet Home
(Those two above are RPGs so without knowledge of Japanese, it will be hard to do much in them)

salamander (lifeforce with more powerups and an ending)
karnov (story screens and an ending)
wing of modola (fun side scroller)
legend of goku (wonderboy in monsterland remake)
gestuffa madden (fun sidescroller)
crisis force (overhead shooter)
valkerie no boken (very nice action rpg)
mad city (better balanced bayou billy..)
double dragon 2 (can beat the game on any of the dificulties)

that should be a good start

Puyo Puyo, Ninja Kun, and any classic NES title (Dr. Mario & Excitebike). Pirateship Higemaru is supposed to be fun too, but I never played it on the FC port.

Couple notes from things in this thread:

"Demon Sword" has more stages in the FC version, and a totally different name...uh, 16-bit had a loose cart last time I checked. For the life of me, I don't remember the name right now. Maybe later. This is a "sequel" to Legend of Kage, and even Demon Sword got billing as such.

Cocorun, are you sure about that? I thought it was Cocoron.

Sweet Home loses basically all its appeal if you can't read Japanese. Try out the translated ROM if you can't be bothered to break out a J-A dictionary, or value convenience more than learning (uh, like me :P )

Ninja Kun is good, but beware of the Ninja Jajamaru-Kun games; I believe there are multiple Jajamaru games and I know *one* stinks - sorta like Konami's Japanese Mr. Goemon arcade game, but without the fun or the bouncing enemies around (it's sorta like a continuously scrolling version of the arcade Mario Bros. with projectiles instead of bouncing blocks). One extra word, makes all the difference.

Valkyrie no Bouken is the prequel to Valkyrie no Densetsu, and plays pretty much completely differently. A bit prettier than Zelda on average, but tougher. You either love it or hate it, so it seems. Japanese people put this one on the top 100 games list, so there's likely going to be competition for it when it shows up.

Double Dragon 2? Argh, slowdown. Yuck.

I think I have that version. It's called "Ninja Kun: Ashura no Shou". I accidently bought it thinking it was the first Ninja Kun game... too bad the seller wouldn't take the game back. :/

Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti. That's an expensive title on eBay.

You are correct. I misspelled it. It is Cocoron.

Akumajo Dracula: Boku Dracula-kun is an awesome and funny platformer that plays like a cross between castlevania and Megaman. Crisis force is another good one. It's a shooter that really pushes the famicom to its graphical limits.
