OK help me out here...if I was going for one of these machines which one should I go for. Do they both play the same games domestic and import or are there differences?
So would it be the JAP or US Turbo Duo. All I know is that each one plays hu-cards and cds but not sure if JAP machine plays US software and vice versa.
Also which one is rarer?

PC Engine HuCards will not play on a TurboGrafx-16, and vice-versa, but all CD software is cross-system compatible.
The type of CD you can play is based on the system card (or BIOS) you have. The System Card 2.0 allows you to play CD-ROM2 games, and the Super System Card 3.0 allows you to play Super CD-ROM games.
Neither system is particularly more common (or rare) than the other. Get whichever suits your needs.

Duo consoles play all disc games that are 3.0 and lower. There are a few games that require arcade cards to play.
In terms of rarity, the Turbo Duo is encountered about as much as the PC Engine Duo. I recommend you buy a Japanese PC Engine Duo. This will allow you to play any CD game without an accessory (save the Arcade Card), plus Japanese hucards. You can pick up a Turbo Grafx dirt cheap to play American hucards.
The rarest Duo consoles are the later PC Engine Duo models dubbed 'R' and 'RX'.

It's this one I was looking at - I assume this is the bog standard one? Any idea roughly of what I should be paying for this?

How about LaserActive PC-Engine attachment? IMO it's much rarer and it works just like a PC-Engine Duo, however, you can only use Arcade Card Duo in order to play ACD games, Pro will get stuck in the module.

Yes, that's the regular version. I'd pay no more than $150 for the system even with the box, styro inserts, and the manual.

I'd say $150 is kinda low...maybe more like $200. I have a US Duo with a huCard adaptor. Suddenly import adaptors are easy to find again due to www.tzd.com having them in stock (albeit at $99). I paid WAY too much for my Duo a few years ago at $300, but it was brand spanking new. $200 is average these days. You will want an adaptor or a TG16 to play US hucards tho.

Yes I would say you are looking at about 200-to a high of 250.00 dont go anything over 250.00 for that particular model. That particular model is harder to find and not very common to see in it's complete form. You can find the Duo R and RX very easily in japan.
I sold a Duo R complete with about 4 Super Cd rom games and one hu card a while back for about 230.00.
Thanks
