These were posted at /. and IGN respectively. Nintendo, it seems, is starting to think about re-releasing an unnamed as of yet classic console to China.

Now thats interesting. Why would they re-release it there instead of here? They must be just testing the market, because I'd like to think that the US market is much more valuable than China. But dont quote me on that. If its a sucess, I hope its a top loader!

Contrary to what we believe 95% of America wants to buy a PS3 for $300, not 15 year old tech. for $30. China, however, is a very poor country once you get off the coast.

The one thing i wouldnt like is that the cost of cheap carts at thrifts are up. If nintendo would release this in the US, it would mean that EVERY cart for that system would go up. even the ones in thrifts. also, it would bring more and more people into collecting, and they would be the ones actully buying SMB/DucK Hunt for 10 bucks!

I dont follow your logic genesisnes. Buyer sets the price not the thrift store. Thrift stores can have prices of $10,000 for a SMB cart it doesnt' mean they will sell it. I also dont see Americans going crazy for 10 year old technology.

I still don't understand the logic.

They are having problems because of piracy so they want to sell older systems there?

Now if they have all this piracy there already tell me WHO would rather buy New Super Nintendo games over cheap bootleg Game Cube Games?

Do they plan to sell SNES games for cheaper than you can buy bootleg Game Cube Games for? Doesn't it cost around $10.00 to produce a cartridge?

That won't stop piracy that just gives those who want newer games more incentive TO PIRATE.

Lets see....

One one hand I can buy a copy of SNES Mario Land for say $14.99 OR
I can buy a bootleg copy of Game Cube Mario Sunshine for $1.50

Hmmm decisions decisions

Nintendo probably wants buyers to purchase their games instead of pirates' games. Buyers may be willing to pay for legitimate, professional copies.

I will dont see the point of this, I mean there is so much pirated stuff out here in the USA and especially China. You can buy controllers at a local swap here that have about 60 games bundled in them for about 20-30 bucks some even cheaper. Ill stick to my nice carts any old day of the week.

Thanks

Nintendo probably wants buyers to purchase their games instead of pirates' games.

To be even more specific, Nintendo probably wants to establish that their older games are still economically viable properties, which will give them a leg up when trying to prosecute emulators and pirates and what have you.

I do think SNES would be the most viable product to push in China. I haven't seen as much pirated stuff (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), as I have for NES. And I think Nintendo knows that the NES has been pirated to death (how could they miss it, really?) So I think top loader would be out of the question. If China's market is anything like Japan's, SNES would do good there with a strong line-up of RPG's.

N64 still isn't bang-for-your-buck, so I think that would be out of the question. And I don't understand how a rerelease being done half way around the globe (more or less, depending on where you live) could effect collectors prices here. Or not even collectors, thrifts, funcos etc.

While the SNES has a lot of RPGs, only a few of them are actually made by Nintendo. If the big N wanted to release the system's role-playing catalog in China, they'd have to work out licensing deals with Square, Enix, Capcom, and so forth.

And if there isn't a glut of pirate SNES titles in China, there would be if Nintendo decided to reissue the system there.

Nintendo could always consider the GameBoy. It's cheap, it appeals to adults as well as younger customers, and unlike a home system, it's entirely self-contained. As Raedon says, China isn't a rich country. I'd like to see the statistics on what percentage of the population owns a TV.
