can the avatar only be up loaded or can i just use URL and link it to that

i put the URL in the URL section and it tells me that the file is to big

does it realy have to be uploaded to or downloaded by the site?

im guessing there is a way - some avatars i see have to be more than 25 KB

i have an avatar problem of a different sort.
it's not showing up for me, it shows in my profile, but not in my posts..
can anyone else see it?
