This is not a DS vs a PSP topic.

Since the emulators came out I've been playing my PSP nonstop. However, before that I was playing my DS a great deal. The PSP games I would buy would keep me happy for about two day and that was it. I really like the abilty to play games like Wario Ware Touched and the touch screen games that came with Mario 64 DS. I would play to see who got the highest score. I really can't wait for animal crossing to come out on the DS so I could play online. Imagine all the stuff that could be played on the DS online with a touch screen, microphone and Dual Screen. As far as the PSP I can't wait for games like GTA to come out. I really think that the time has come to have two protable systems living together. What do you guys think? Can Nintendo and Sony both have successful portables out?

This is not a DS vs a PSP topic.

Unfortunatly this won't stop it from becoming one in the end (I hope someone proves me wrong).

I think they can both be successful...I own both and am happy with both their libraries. I still think that both need to get more games out soon, but with the DS lineup I saw at E3 I know theres enough on that front to keep me satisfied. I like the DS for its originality (if you have played the new Kirby you get a nice taste of where they want to go with the system) and at the same time the more traditional gameplay of say Ridge Racers and Lumines on the PSP. I think that because of the variety of gameplay between each system, its enough to keep things fresh...you won't get the same tupe of game on both systems.

Yeah, I think the portable market is currently working like the 16-bit era. Both the Genesis and the SNES had fairly even market share and were definately very successful consoles.

I pretty much agree with Drexel. The market is waaay bigger than it used to be so even if people fall into the PSP camp or DS only camp there's still plenty folks to buy games. Personally I'll pick up a PSP at some point but I'm concentrating on my DS at the mo.

Well I've been hunting on eBay for a DS alot lately, because I'm a cheap bastard, and I want to find the deal of all deals.. and I've noticed that alot of the DS sellers are saying "the only reason I'm selling this is so I can save up for a PSP." That kind of worried me... but for all I know the same thing could be happening on the other side.

I think the PSP look had everyone in shock, even me. After I bought one the shock is gone and I love both equally, but differently. I don't want to give either of them up.

am i the only person in the world that thinks the DS looks better then the PSP, I mean the casing, not the graphics..

I have both, and I am a lil disappointed with my DS at the moment, but I am anticipating A boy and his blob..

I think they can live together, their libraries are completely different, and attract different people.. I like both of em

I'm sure this has been pointed out before, but...

... LOL

But Anyway, one the one hand DS is more comsetically visually appealing for it's portability aspect (closing up and protecting the screens) but on the other hand PSP has a much larger, single screen which allows you to see easier what exactly is going on.

DS > PSP but that's just my opinion when it comes to originality and style.

Yet I think someone brought up that it could be possible to make a flash device for the DS to allow you to play NES/SNES games.

and for the record Game & Watch > Lynx LOL

I am waiting for a decent DS game since Launch.
Playing Hot Shots Golf Open Tee, Metal Gear Acid and Ridge Racer.

I am probably going to get Mario and Luigi 2 if I keep my DS...

i think the 16bit era was the best. and i really hope that having such a competition on the portable market will turn out the same quality (and quantity) of games as that era brought us.

unfortunately its doubtful that it will happen, because the 16bit era was just that - 16 bit. all console were basicaly equal in power and graphics, this is not the case with the DS and PSP so we'll be seeing very different games which wont compete w/ each other (the games, not systems) like the 2 ridge racers are essentially completely different games, and the one w/ better graphics will usually win. so people will be looking at gameplay more i think, stuff like would i rather play a 2d fighter or a 3d fighter? 3d diablo-esque rpgs or classic 2d sprite rpgs?

we'll see, competition is healthy, but then again, nintendo has some of the worst executive desicions ever so i dont know. i hope they both have leanghty, healthy life cycles.

From what I've heard so far they haven't been as bad as some of the several bad choices made by Atari and Sega made. And it took some pretty big goof-ups to mess them up.

Atari had the 1983 'crash' plus a major company makeover plus delayed launch of the 7800.

Sega put too much into new hardware for the Genesis trying to keep it alive (SegaCD, 32X) and then with Saturn made many more poor choices.

Plus Dreamcast wasn't given a fair chance IMO. It was doing fine. It sold extremely well compared to Saturn and had many major titles (Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi) as well as online play with a 56k modem included plus a broadband adapter, keyboard, mouse, 4 controller ports built in.

Now the system sells for chicken feed when it should still be a current-gen system, even if it's behind GC, PS2 & XBOX in hardware slightly. Considering it was out several years before the rest you have to give it some slack in that department. I consider Dreamcast to be my favorite current-gen system, with Gamecube in 2nd.

I don't have a PS2 or XBOX right now so I can't count them. However even if I did, odds are I'd still favor Dreamcast as my #1 favorite.

yeah atari and sega messed up... but i mean what does ANY of that have ANYTHING to do w/ ds and psp competeing? lol. but yeah i agree with everything youve said, the interesting thing is, i think it might be argued that nintendo made more mistakes than both of those put together, they just have always been able to stay alive, due to reputation and various other endevours (the insanity that is pokemon)

I was worried for awhile that the PSP was just going to crush the DS. But somebody in another thread had some sales figures, and over a million DS units have been sold in the U.S. I think there'll always be plenty of people around to buy games for it, as such. It may never be a successful as its rival machine, but it can still survive, just like the GC.

Feel the Magic is the best game ive played this year... yeah its technically a 2004 game, but it felt like a DC era Sega game.

whichever platform provides more games like feel the magic will be my favorite (obviously, that is the DS right now)

I just can't wait for "Shogun: Total War" on the DS. That games looks so awesome, I can hardly stand it.

For the PSP, I have heard of "Star Wars: Battlefront" possibly making an appearance. That would be awesome!

For me, neither system has a game I'm just completely crazy about. I probably like Wario Ware and Untold Legends best, respectively. Wario Ware is probably more fun to me, like the original poster said, getting the highest scores. I find that addictive.

I think there is definetly market room for both systems. I end up using my PSP as more of a movie/music player, and play games on the DS more. I think they appeal to slightly different markets.

It has everything to do with it. Atari and Sega were competing with each other as well as with Nintendo.

... So I was just pointing out that Atari and Sega made far worse ones. So what if Nintendo may have made more mistakes than the two put together. It's the severity of the mistake that matters. Sony and MS have made mistakes with their systems as well I'm sure.

Sega has had more hardware than Nintendo and had great sucess with the Genesis and Dreamcast plus moderate success with Master System, 32x GameGear, Nomad, SegaCD, Saturn, yet it still went gave up on the console market. Funny since Dreamcast was doing very well. One heck of a way to go out, nearly on top.

TeddyRuxpin your claims are severely misguided and uninformed. im sure many others here can help you out with sega and atari history.

we've steared far enough from the topic.

You mean the many historical websites about Atari and Sega are misguided and uninformed. That's where I've gotten my info from. :/

Yeah I definitely think both systems will be succesful! I was doubtful for a while on the DS, but it really looks like there's some great games coming out, more so than the PSP which had a stronger initial launch.

I could be wrong, but I think both PSP and DS are doing poorly in Midwest, come to any store here, both systems are sitting on the shelve and collecting dust. Ironicly, both iPod and GBA SP are selling very well, I have a feeling that Nintendo will abaondon DS and go back to Game Boy root later. My local ShopKo has sold 2 PSP hardware so far, and 4 games, no joke! (since launch in March)
