I've noticed a few Arcade roms that have special hacks to make them 4 players for online mode.. mostly beat-em-ups... Well I was wondering if you could do this with console games? For instance could I modify Super Mario Brothers 3 to be 4 players?... I think that'd be fun.

How much do you like 6502 assembly?
if you know the machine code for the mnemonics off by hand then yeah you could possibly do it...
It would probably be faster for you to reimpliment SMB3 battle mode in some other (modern) language than hack in a 4 player mode.
