Question for you all. When Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance was released on the PS2, I hadn't bought my system yet and didn't forsee a reason for picking it up at the time.

Shortly after I got my PS2, Amazon.com has them for $19.99, and I didn't get it because I assumed Substance was a budget title re-release with extra stuff, like Konami did for the GH version of Silent Hill 2.

Unfortunately, about a month later it was gone from Amazon.com and I never saw it that low again. Hell, I don't think I saw it for less than $50 new again after that.

Now that I have an Xbox, I see lots of online stores have it for $15 new. And I figure that I might as well pick it up now while I can. BUT... I'm curious, is there any specific difference between the Xbox and PS2 version of Substance?

Thanks.

The Xbox version does not have the hidden skateboard level (which, was basically just the level form that awful konami skateboarding game) and sadly seems to be poorly ported.

The Xbox version suffers from a LOT of slowdown, especially when there are heavy graphical special effects, like the rain.

I bought my system for it too. Still worth it for the $15 though.

In addition to the above, I heard there was some sort of graphical effect or graphics filter or something that wasn't implemented in the bawks version. Everything looks weird because of it. At least, that's what I heard.

*hugs PS2 version MGS2:Substance*

LOTs of slowdown = a slight dip in the framerate in the opening level.

Get the Xbox version if only for 5.1. Slowdown is hardly noticable, especially if you've never played the PS2 version. (in which case it isn't even there)

MGS2: Substance for the xbox is a piss-poor port at best. Konami really dropped the ball making it. Aside for the slow down issues (which to be fair aren't all that bad) there is a bigger problem with the xbox version of MGS2, control.

I love my type-s but god damn it you really need at least 3 shoulder buttons to play MGS right. The best scheme i found used the right trigger for first person and black and white buttons for inventory.

Seriously this is a bad port. It's not a bad version of the game, but it's just so poorly coded it's a shame. Konami could've done a better job and they should've done a better job. The xbox was the powerhouse of this generation, but instead of taking advantage of it like other developers, they totally fucked it up and it suffers from slow down problems that normally only PS2 games have.

I noticed on eBay the other day that there is something called "The documents of MGS 2" for PS2 (American) - What is this? Is this a game? Is it an add on pack? Is it just a Dvd extra thing???

Any reason why Substance is the only MGS game on the Xbox? Will they make a Snake Eater for it perhaps?

Will they do the same to snake Eater as they did to Son's Of Liberty, and release a "Fuller" version later on down the line???

Document of MGS 2 is a sort of "making of" dvd extra...it only plays in the PS2, but it has lots of development info, 3d models to play around with, artwork, etc. Also has a small set of VR missions that were later included in Substance. A fun little disc if you're a fan.

They're already planning an expanded Snake Eater for later this year, MGS3 Subsistance (w/online multiplayer and ports of the MSX Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2)

Will that be for both PS2 & Xbox, or Xbox only?

Makes you wonder why they bother releasing the game in the first place, if they do this. This would be the third time they have conned people by releasing extra material after the release of the actual game...

It's neither of these.

Okay, which system is this improved MGS 3 coming out for? I've been holding off on buying MGS 3 in the hope it would come out for a new system better then the PS2.....

Oh, and I think the port of MGS2: Substance is fine.

I agree wholeheartedly. Playing them side-by-side you can really tell the difference (we did this at one of our game nites to settle an argument). Seems like they rushed the port.

Sounds pretty... SUBSTANTIAL LOL Zinger! Don't forget to tip the wait staff!!!

But seriously, as someone who still needs to finish the PSOne Metal Gear, is PS2 Substance worth the extra dough it goes for or will the regular el cheapo Metal Gear 2 SoL do the trick?

I'll be here all week (also SoL),
Ben!

I think the extra $$$ for Substance is worth it. I barely touched the Snake Tales missions, but I wasted countless hours on the VR Missions. If I didn't have those to go to after I beat the main game, I would've been real disappointed. They make up for the lack of pure gameplay in the main game.

Boo his. I was hoping MGS 3 would get ported to the XBox. Oh well. I'll still wait for that improved version and buy it. The MSX ports of Metal Gear 1 and 2 sound very nice.
