I'm working on getting an easy-to-use cheatsheet for everyone to print on the go and stick in your pocket when you're out thrifting or heading to an event. This variation gives you a quick list of games by system with checkboxes for [G]ame [B]ox and [I]nstruction manual as well as the DP-defined Rarity rating.

Here are some samples. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks to John "swlovinist" Hancock for the idea and page design.

I think they look awesome!

I don't know if my Palm Pilot allows writing to PDF files or not. That would be the ultimate tool, the guide on the go.

DP, I'm pretty sure I've said this before but... I love you.

Seriously, it looks perfect for a simple checklist on the go!

It's easy enough to do but I'm trying to build a system that doesn't force me to run 100 jobs every month. So ideally I'd put ALL of the stuff into a single report and you can print the pages you want. You won't have any overlap in US and non-US games, I can separate pages by country.

What's your ETA on this 'lil project, DP? Reckon I could have some PAL lists printed out for my second car boot sale on Sunday? :)

Neat! One thing I noticed on the Atari 2600 list is that because some the rarity of some games can very greatly depending on manufacturer, it could be confusing without the manufacturer listed. I don't know if it would be possible with your system to add the manufacturer to just those games with multiple listings, but I think that might be helpful to a lot of people.

Yeah I noticed that. It's also a problem with US titles (Sears). I'm just squeezing in a "/manufacturer" after each title. It won't always fit in there but it looks pretty good.

I was about to put a beta of the full report (two of them, actually, one US and one non-US separated by country) but the US report is 116 PAGES long!

Erm... let me figure out a better way of filtering or dividing this up.

Whipee! You and the rest of the DP crew never cease to amaze me.

Here's another idear:
Have it published into a poket sized book. Use small print and very thin paper. Too thick? Publish individual books for individual systems. I know I would buy the NES, Genesis, and Atari (2600, 5200, & 7800) books at any price! Just an idea.

Wonderful job! I have a few observations: The "R" in the rarity column is redundant, and space is obviously at a premium. Perhaps you could see if there's some way to remove it. Also, if you separated the three main columns with two lines, you could squeeze them in closer without making things too confusing. Finally, the G/B/I could be changed from three boxes:

_ _ _
|_| |_| |_|
... to a single box:

_____
|_|_|_|

Anyway, those are just some ideas. Thanks for doing this for everyone. I'm sure the paper industry will feel a slight bump in demand once these guides are released. Heheh.

I think what I'll do is put the popular systems out there (and PC Engine would qualify) and try to get away with updating whenever someone mentions that it needs to be updated. The last thing I want to get stuck with is another maintenance job.

Should be good to go tomorrow.

Check Linus on the NES list. I think there is a problem with using "/ manufacturer" like you mentioned earlier.

Maybe you could do footnotes.

I think anyone here who uses these is most likely going to be able to tell the difference between same-titled games by rarity. But I think abbreviations would work okay, or even shortening the game title (I think Linus Spacehead is quite enough, no one's going to think it's Linus Spacehead's Surf Design or whatever). But that's probably more work. O_O

Would it be possible to get the # for the PC Engine games? Meaning the TX............ or whatever? Because I can't read the japanese and this would make the list SUPER useful.

It's easy to do but it will double the size of the output. I'll put it online later tonight and you can decide if this is a better alternative.

not quite sure the best way to do it since lots of the games were released in cardboard box and case form though

Absolutely beautiful. This was exactly the sort of thing that I was looking for when I stumbled onto DP in the first place - I've since bought the books, but I am quite happy to have just these small lists.

That being said, I'll give some feedback.

Is there an easy way to make the checkboxes actually checkmarkable via adobe? IE, so we could open the document up and click on a box to have it darken - then we could print that list out to take in the wild? Or if it's already in place, could someone tell me where my adobe skills are lacking. :)

Have you thought about adding the price to simple lists? I know this is primarily meant to be a check and see if I have it list, but it might also be useful to tell at a glance: A. I don't have it and B. This game is worth a lot more than what this flea-market has it listed! I know you still want people to buy the books, but I don't think that including the price would take away too much from what the books have to offer.

Could we get a peek at the U.S. PS1 list? Please? :)

To relieve you of mantaining the lists, is there a way for the PDFs to be dynamically generated at set times? IE, you set the paramaters and the site itself pulls the data from the database and makes a new PDF every 24 hours or something? Just an idea - I have abosuletely no idea if it's even possible, but someone more web-savy might be able to say, "yeah, here's how ya do it." Probably save you time if you could get it set up.

Anyway, great work. Thanks for the lists.

I actually printed off the original NES one from the beginning of the thread as opposed to the later one that has the publisher. It's less cluttered and I can keep the Indiana Jones games, etc.. straight.

I would like to see a NES list with the licensed and unlicensed games separated. That would be way awesome.

I second the idea of putting prices in the guide, maybe even in place of rarity if space is too much of an issue.

It would be cool but perhaps too difficult to make the lists automatically fill themselves out based on the DP collection list.

This is good though, thanks.

Can anyone either a) recommend a good PDF reader for Palm OS besides Acrobat Reader or b) tell me how to get Acrobat Reader working on my Palm?

Here are the details for issue b if anyone can help:
I have a Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.3.9 and my Palm is a Tungsten T with Palm OS 5.0. I have downloaded Acrobat Reader for Palm OS onto my powerbok and the the AdobeReader.prc for my Palm.

When I open Adobe Reader, it says "To begin using Adobe Reader for Palm OS, please place your device in its cradle and press the HotSync button."

I do this, but nothing happens (it syncs the rest of my stuff, but the screen on Adobe Reader doesn't change). The AdobeReader applications *does* get installed onto my Palm.

If I click Cancel on that screen, I can add some PDF files to the "To Transfer" list, but I have no way of getting them to my Palm (HotSyncing doesn't affect them).

Any help?

I use Foxit for .pdf viewing, it's like a 1mb file as opposed to a 30mb program bloated full of crap (adobe)

Any future plans to have something like this that can be generated on the fly? i.e. using the current search online rarity guide to output to this type of format? So if someone want to they could search all activision 2600 games in US release, and have it spew out a page that looks like this?

AFGiant
07-04-2005, 05:28 PM
Woohoo! I've been waiting for more of these since the first few came out before. Awesome stuff. Thank you, hard-working DP Staff!

Anyway, in the future, I think it would be cool to see some specialized lists, for example:
Not For Resale games
store-only exclusives
PSX Longbox
etc.

Just an idea though. Oh, and I agree on the idea for the checklists for current gen systems. The rarities arn't really needed, just a simple list.
Game on everyone!

I was thinking, and I know I would get a lot of use out of a DP "field guide." Something that was a much smaller book that would fit in some pockets, but still had the game checklists with rarities and prices.
