Unlike the GBA or GBA SP, you drop the PSP on a hard surface and it's done for.

I highly suggest keeping it in a hard case at all times while you are outside with it.

I disagree, I dropped mine on concrete and its doing just fine. I wouldn't recommend doing it often though. :D

lets put it this way... youd have better chances dropping your 36" from six feet than your psp from 4.

I've dropped my psp 2 times so far. First time, it fell from my hand, inside the cloth case that it came with, onto concrete from about 4 feet. Didn't bounce, caused absolutely no damage at all to it.

Second time just happened today, it slipped from my hand, landed in a pile of dirt. Was in its cloth case, caused no damage.

It's durable, but I don't think its as durable as my DS. That thing fell from like 6 feet, bounced 2 times, and was absolutely fine.

it has too many moving parts to be super durable, then you also have to contend with keeping the screen in good shape

I've sat on my GBASP, which I forgot that I left in my back pocket. It didn't break it. Of course, I have abused my SP so much that it has knicks and scratches all over its plastic casing. I just hope that the GB Micro is as durable if not more durable than the SP. Portables need to be durable.

I have heard that the PSP sometimes ejects its disk when dropped, so you should also worry about scratching your game.

i dont have a psp yet

but i know it is durable enough to pass certain government standards - so from that point of view - you are gettgin an item that is at least as durable as the minimum standards imposed by the government - it is ofcourse depending on the market - like in medical - devices have to survie many Gs

but my feeling of sony is they like to design for failure
so you can bet that the thing was specificaly designed not to last forever but long enough to not generate negative press concerning quality

so if you want to have an idea of the minimum testing it had to pass you can look up regulatory regulations for consumer handheld products

This is kinda off topic, but is there a protection plan out there that you can get for the PSP that is a really good deal?

Obviously, no protection plans will cover you dropping the PSP onto the concrete, but are any of the protection plans really good, in terms of if maybe you dropped one, but it isn't obvious that it was dropped, and you can still get it replaced?

This is one of the main things that has prevented me from getting a PSP. I'm very worried about scratching the screen, about dead pixels, and about damaging it in some way.

It's not exactly a cheap little toy.

The other thing that's bothering me with the PSP right now, is the fact that supposedly the screens on the Japanese units are much better than the U.S. screens.

What country do you live in? The only thing that Sony has to do for the USA government is pass an FCC test, which means nothing for durability and has to do with EMF interference.

I would imagine the laser inside is as delicate as the one inside a Mini Disc. Certainly don't want to be getting any muck inside there.

The batteries will also eventually wear down to the point where they lose their charge a lot quicker. I'd perhaps buy a cheap third party set to use whilst at home (Or plugged into the mains) and then use the proper ones for on the move gaming...

Eventually, batteries will become harder to find over the years, much like Nomad or Game Gear ones.

THe thumbstick on the left is also very delicate. I can see a few people trashing that in a very short period of time!

Umm, the Game Gear takes AA's man... those are definitely NOT hard to find. As for the PSP, there are 3rd party batteries all over the place, so that should be a factor for a LONG time.
