Hey all. I know there have been instances of a M.C. Kids for NES prototype being found (DreamTR own one). What I want to know is if anyone has any pictures/articles of the prototype version? I remember it was suppose to be like Mario 3 with the characters actually changing...but I have never seen any pictures. The prototype version was shown at a few shows before it was ultimatley changed to the version released now.
Hopefully DreamTR will one day sell it...Or dump it.

It's not floating around yet, I think Skrybe is going to do something with it on his website.

I hadn't planned on it, actually. You mentioned the game deserved more than just a quickie release, so I was holding off to let someone else take care of it, since I wasn't up for doing anything big with it. I can put something together for it, since it doesn't look like anyone else is going to, but it's not high on my list of priorities right now.
GizmoGC, supposedly the big thing that Nintendo wanted changed about the original M.C. Kids was that the overworld maps were too much like Super Mario World. The maps in this proto seem pretty much the same as in the final version, so I don't think this is that Mario-styled version you're looking for.

Skrybe, Thanks for the info. If you need any help with it, I'd be more then happy to help. Its my favorite game, and I'd love to help the prototype version come out in some shape or form.
Also, where did you aquire this from?

Thanks, but let me take a better look at it first. If all the stages haven't been implemented yet, it might not take that long to play through it and pick out changes after all. I'll look tonight and see what I think I'll be able to do with it.

The rom came from DreamTR's copy. It was dumped as part of a trade between him and TheRedEye, myself, and a few others.

Hey now, some people happen to really enjoy this game! I'm still of the opinion that if the game had competent artists doing the sprites, it would have at least been considered a cult classic. It did so many things right. Hell, read the Video Fenky link in the first post, it's full of great quotes.

GizmoGC: The game isn't mine alone to share. Like I said, several people were involved with this trade. I'm working, albeit slowly, at getting something together so I can give it a proper release.
Buyatari: I'm pretty sure this was the only copy he had at the time it was dumped. It was a pretty good while ago when this happened. Actually, come to think of it, it's going on two years now. Wow, time flies, huh?

Well I'm pretty sure he had one copy when I traded him the one I traded him. This was along time ago as well, year 2000 2001 or so.

I used to have two copies of the game...one of them NESGOD has now, and it's pretty close to the released version, the other is different, and I still own it...I might have a second one still * I would need to check my list * but I am pretty sure the only one I have is the one featured on tsr's page. I did acquire one from buyatari years ago and another from an unnamed source. That is where the "different" rom came from.
a dude named frodolip or something used to have one, sold it to someone, prolly nes god or dreamtr

In the interview (http://www.atarihq.com/tsr/special/gt.html) |tsr did with the programmer way back when, he made it sound like the powerups were never implemented in any version of the game. They certainly don't seem to be in DreamTR's copy.
Most of the differences in his copy are what you would expect from a game midway through development: some debugging stuff is still in place, certain features haven't been added yet, graphics need touching up, etc. The biggest change I've seen so far is that the script was totally reworked between DreamTR's proto and the final:
http://64.53.95.207/stuff/mcproto.gif http://64.53.95.207/stuff/mcfinal.gif
DreamTR's proto is on the left, the retail release is on the right. You can also see where they added polka dots on the ground in the final version.

Yes, the game will get released. I've been very busy this summer and haven't had a lot of time to work on it. Fall semester starts in a couple of weeks, hopefully I'll have a little more free time to work on it then. If my workload doesn't seem to be letting up, though, I'll go on and just release it with what I've done up to this point.

Skrybe, when I saw you released MC Kids the first person I thought of was the guy asking about here.
Thanks for completing the 12 days of Christmas also, nice to see these games released. Maybe somebody can figure out what is different in those games that seem identical to the released versions but are not.

I'm just glad the games are finally out there for people to play (and off my conscience.) I would've liked to do a little more with a few of them, especially MC Kids, but it was past time to let everyone give them a try.
Maybe somebody can figure out what is different in those games that seem identical to the released versions but are not.
I'm wondering if that copy of Snow Bros is like Crackout in that the only difference is some kind of internal version number or notation, something unrelated to the game itself. Whatever was changed, I know it was minor.

So far ive noticed alot of changes. Enemies appearing where the shouldn't (The moose for example is Level 1-2). Ive also noticed was looks tobe new characters, or just ones that are not finished. The levels are all different as well....very cool!
