they added some content to the xbox installment. are there any downsides to it (like sh2's slowdown) that counteract the extra goodies?

Hmmm....the only thing I can remember that was added to the xbox version was this killer doll that chases you around, and of course, the obligatory graphics upgrade. I'm sure they must have added some other stuff as well.

Xbox version is harder, the monsters are stronger and respawn quicker...and a new "Chaos Tower" was added. (Which is a pain in the ass to finish) Plus some new weapons and armor were added. That Killer Doll that was mentioned, she's a pain in the ass...you cannot kill it...so just run passed it asap...but sometimes she will block your path...so good luck

PS2 version is a breeze compared to "Genma"

However if you die a certain number of times in genma you unlock an easier difficulty level.

Genma Onimusha is a great game. They upgraded the graphics, made the enemies tougher and added the psychotic doll. This doll will haunt you. You'll walk into a room and there it will BE just sitting next to a nice unopened chest waiting. You can finally kick it's ass at the end though if you use all the magic in all of your weapons, haha.

They also added the Ogre Tower. It's a 50 level tower where you have to fight tons of enemies. The hardest part is mostly the boss at the top, but if you use the wind weapon on him, it's usually fast enough to get through his cheap attacks and you get the sexy ogre armor ;D.

I highly recommend picking up Genma. It's challanging and tons of fun. If you've never played the original then it's worth getting for the extra xbox features. There's no slowdown or anything that I can remember. The only other thing I think they might have added is the bishimon sword, but it probably is in the ps2 version.

Hmm, maybe it's time for me to get into this series! Well, when the price goes down a bit...

Oh man, you defenitely need to get into the series! Genma should be like 8 bucks at most ebgames stores and Onimusha 2 for the ps2 just recently got sent out to a bunch of best buys out here in AZ new for 9.99, so trying a nearby BB out for the sequel might be worth a try.

Well, I checked the racks at the local BB, they never carry games in their small selection for that price...I can always check the local Babbage's (whatever they call it now). :)
