I checked out my "Recent Games" list for SNES9x (the emu I was playing Front Mission: GH on), and noticed it'd been quite a while since I loaded up any other title. Yes, it's that good! One of the more recent ones was Dead Dance (which is Tuff E Nuff here in the states, I guess? Some people mentioned a few of these games over in the Import Discussion forum here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58240)). I don't believe this topic has been done before. A couple games on my mind mostly just from the B section of the SFC catalogue:

Bishin Densetsu Zoku.
Huh, interesting (I think it's based off an anime series). You have these horrible Mode 7 driving sequences where you weave all about trying to find a route to the exit and not get destroyed colliding with traffic head-on (lots of morons on the road) or caught on those concrete barriers at the side of the road (lots of hairpin turns; man, the Man really hates me). After doing some of this garbage in the story mode (there's also a Vs. mode with just fighting), you get to duke it out. As usual, character designs that look awesome in the cutscenes look like pure garbage when animated.

Dead Dance
Chunky characters and a bit too much lag after hits for my liking. Also, the story sequence thing at the beginning looks like crap. The music and backgrounds are pretty good, though.

Battle Master
Some SFII-style ripoff areas, and not nearly enough animation. Some of the characters look nice (when standing still), I guess. There's a decent variety of attacks and they use the full set of buttons (shoulder buttons too). Haven't played much out of this one, because it's just so very much not promising.

Battle Tycoon
YAY, a cheap SFC fighter that doesn't look horrible. If you're allergic to anime art styled things, you'd really better stay away from this title. For the rest of us, then, it's a great looking fighter with what appears to be a ton of options, maybe even some RPG elements (like stats to fiddle with before a fight). You start off in a city and you can choose to go various places to accomplish things. Hmm. Bought the game from GaijinPunch a while ago; glad I made it.

Super V.G. (Variable Geo)
Heh, I remember being nonplussed by this title; looking at it again I see that it doesn't look too bad (all the fighters are women, too, hooray). The move set seems limited (that or it relies on combo...I'm pretty bad at this fighting thing)

Brutal: Paws of Fury
Well, taking the dive into potential FURRY MADNESS, I see this isn't too bad graphically (Prince Leon is hillarious; lions with afros are obviously awesome). The backgrounds are exceptionally cool looking, if not incredibly impressive or laden with traps (from the number I've seen). However, I could only seem to get my fighter to do a small handful of attacks; pressing back + one of the shoulder buttons gave the same attack as a different button, say. What's that all about? Seems a bit shallow.

King of the Monsters (both games are on the SFC/SNES): I like this port better than the original game, if only because of the nicer graphics. If you've played this game, you know how utterly impossible the grappling system is. Impossible, and seems random. The sequel is a cool street roaming game + fighter, just a bit more like Final Fight with boss fights at the end.

Kishin Douji Zenki (okay, this isn't like SFII)
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON
I guess it's supposed to be something like Battle Heat (why wouldn't it be, this is a Hudson Soft game after all)? Very cool anyhow.

Makeruna Makendo(u) 2
Much better looking sprites than most of the fighters in this list, and similar to the Ranma 1/2 fighter in that regard. Still seems to have a limited animation set, but when you make contact with your opponent it feels solid. Very happy-go-lucky ambience. Makeruna Makendou, the original, was a action platformer somewhat like Valis. I think both games are pretty expensive, too.

I actually remember enjoying Jaleco's Tuff Enuff/Dead Dance quite a bit back in the day. There was a great rip-off of the Sho-ryu-ken uppercut but with a kick instead, which I remember loving to pull off on my friend!

Fighter's History was also rather nice.

eh what exactly do you want us to do? list tournament styler fighters? only sfc? not a++ titles? i don't really get it, but i'll just list some

yeah, Fighter's History is awesome, one of my favs

more well known snes vs. fighters are Turtles (good), Pwas of Fury (ehhh), Primal Rage (ugh), Weaponlord ( O K ), Samurai Shodown (good, but not a perfect port), Fatal Fury ( O K ), World Heroes ( O K) and the DBZ games ( good)

for more obscure sfc titles try:

Sailor Moon (yeah, there are vs. fighters), interesting for fans, obscure for everyone else

Cho Aniki, interesting for gays LOL

Gundam Wing: Endless Duel, HUGE sprites, a must for gundam/robots/mechs fans

Pretty Fighter, cute girls fight each other, what else do you want? LOL

Bastard!, wow, thats a different type of Vs. fighter, give it a try

YES you get 10 exp. for using your intuition skill! Why not, anyhow? I like to see what the buzz is, new games or old.

Going off my own topic a bit (because business is bad right now), but the scrolling fighter (Final Fight-style) with this license looks pretty. Yes.

Gundam Wing: Endless Duel, HUGE sprites, a must for gundam/robots/mechs fans
Eh, never really got the point of it. I'll have to try it again. Seemed weak to me.

I figured that was far enough afield that it didn't need to be included. Interesting though.

natsuki crisis battle - rather bland graphics, haven't played it yet.

onita asushi fmw - basically, a wrestling game (only 4 characters, wtf?) that has been converted into a sf2 style versus fighter. there's some damaging obstacles in the levels (like the typical barrels or columns, in here i've been knocked into a little torch stand).

death brade (hehe) - reminds me of battle monsters for the genesis. of course, when i bought battle monsters from ebay, it was lost in the mail with an r6 magic schoolbus game :( .

hokuto no ken 6 & 7 - two games of the fist of the north star liscense marred by akward combat and no real gore. wtf?

art of fighting 2 - jpn only title, its basically more of the same from the looks of it.

matsumura kunihiro den - i own this. great super deformed characters (in digitized graphics, with good animation) who expressed great wacky expressions and deal out nifty attacks. (includes a move to "roll around" to the other side of the screen. no more corner massacres!)

I beat Ultimate Fighter years ago.

You can pick it to be either free-control action RPG or menu driven.

I thought it was an RPG? I know this game is on the x68000. Nice.

overlooked american games:

rise of the robots
street combat
shaq fu
double dragon v - the shadow falls
power moves (rofl, it was called deadly moves on the genesis. i guess the title was too dark for nintendo)

OVER LOOKED??? you must be kidding, there was more hype about this one than for Halo 2 LOL well, not quite, but still a lot of hype because of the graphics, but boy did this game suck, no need to mention it ever again

it wasn't mentioned in the thread yet, so yeah, overlooked.

here's a real obscure sfc title:

hana no keiji

looks like a 2d version of the original dynasty warriors (before it became a giant hackfest)
