Kutaragi also talked about his decision to adopt Blu-ray for the PlayStation 3 rather than wait a bit longer to see if the Blu-ray and HD-DVD factions would come to a final conclusion on a unified disc standard. "E3 was the last chance," Kutaragi said. "The PS3 is the console of the future, so I wanted an extreme amount of capacity. But for that, we need cutting-edge technology, and not technology that is currently available. My suggestion was to come to an agreement with a physical format that is as close to [the Blu-ray's] 0.1mm as possible. But the PS3 launches in spring 2006. If we had continued to wait for a unified standard, we wouldn't be able to release the PS3. We no longer have any more time. It's game over." -From Gamespot

Hey makes sense to me :)

YAY, more storage that most developers don't need as most don't fill a full DVD now!!!

It seems to me that many developers could still put many of their games on a regular CD or PSone disc at least many of the current-gen games anyway.

Well, we had that discussion a while ago, I say that cutting-edge games will make use of it, and all games will expand much farther than a DVD allows with high res textures and probably more speech (and...FMV, argh); the main thing is that it's going to make games cost more again.

Bah, I love FMV in games (not FMV games though >_> ). Gimme a big meaty intro and videos before and after every level :-P

I'm hoping that the added space will mean true high-definition games. There would be enough room to put a couple of different versions of the game on the same disc, one optimized for HD (especially since the PS3 can output up to 1080p) and one optimized for standard definintion.

Sony's already using UMD for the PSP, which (for now) is a proprietary format. Blu-Ray may end up being the same thing for the PS3. The system will still play DVD/CD/SACD so it's not going to be a complete washout. True, it probably won't end up playing HD-DVD's, which makes the system less valuable to some. But neither the Xbox 360 nor the Revolution are currenly offering any HD-disc support.
