Most of the stuff they are talking about is fairly rare, with the exception of the gold zelda carts.

Some of them are talking about international rarities too dont forget.

Dunno whats so funny about it. The question is:

"What's the rarest game you have in your collection? "

If I only had 2 NES games, super mario bros and super mario bros 3 the rarest game in my collection would be SMB3.

Everyone have a rarest game in their collection even it is easy to find. The gold cartridge of Majora's Mask PAL version "only" had 10.000 printed (atleast what I've heard).
Its not that hard to get, but its more rare than the normal grey cart atleast :)

"Final Fantasy 3 aka 6, Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, Street Combat, and many others for SNES. I got tons of Snes games. A lot rare."

None of these games are "rare" There were at least a million sold of each, they are just harder to come by because of the demand for them.

Yeah I also don't see what's so funny, those just happen to be the rarest games that those people have. Yet I would have to say that none of those games are really rare, just high in demand.

Well it could be funny on some accounts. For instance, one of the guys claims that his rarest game is a gold copy of Majora's Mask, yet maybe he has in his possession StarCraft 64? Not all of them might be aware of whats rare and whats not rare in their collections.

Ye.. hehe, but still. If he only have a few games some of them have to be the rarest. No matter how common they are :)

A lot of people (me included before I came here!) equate "valuable" with "rare" when that certainly isn't the case.

yeah, im still trying to get out of the habit of mistaking demand and value for rarity.. im focusing on nes now because i realize i have been collecting games and consoles for a couple of years, and know only little bits about each. i dont really fit in with any other collectors because i cant participate in their in-depth conversations about their console of choice.

Off-topic a bit, but I wish more OCRemixers would do treatments of non-Square games :D

Meh, OCRemix isn't exactly known for having a bunch of collectors there. It's a site for people who enjoy game music, whether they own the games or not, and heck, a lot of the people there don't even know much about soundtracks and the composers behind the music they enjoy.

I don't particularly find it funny. It's like if you were to go to a garage sale and find someone selling Stadium Events for a buck. Nothing funny about it, nor am I going to think the person is stupid. They just don't share my hobby or my interest in the rarity and value of games. Somebody who collects antiques of various kinds may laugh at us too if they asked "What's the rarest antique you own?" and you name something that isn't especially rare or you own other things that are much rarer and you just don't know.

Those kinds of topics aren't an oddity either. Just check the GameFAQs system boards; there's constantly topics asking what's the rarest game for so-and-so system that each person has. On the PlayStation board people usually name the RPGs they have, even the very most common ones, or stuff like Silent Hill and the Mega Man games and what have you. Then if you try to tell them the difference between rarity and demand and mention some truly rare games they say "Well, those games aren't good and nobody wants them, so they can't be rare".

I think it's just the difference between rare and sought after that's the issue. A lot of the times they come together, but sometimes they are totally mismatched.

This probably happens so much on the internet, most of would be depresseed. Thousands of message boards:

"I found the FIRST Final Fantasy on the ORIGINAL Nintendo! I'm rich!"

Sorry son, but no.
