Which reminds me- if Gamespot's shutting down what do you think will happen to Gamefaqs? You know since they bought it and all.

Too bad most people at the Gamefaqs forums don't follow that.

Actually the point is that they do. It's sarcastic. Did you read the article?

GameStop isn't dying. The powers that be are killing "GameSpotting," which vainly attempted to inject some personality into the world's most boring video game website.

-- Z.

Maybe it's because I only use the site to check which games are out on which consoles and look up screenshots- but I have no idea what GameSpotting is. O.o

It also seems to me if you're going to post all over your web site that "GameSpotting" is dead that you might make it clearer that you're ending a feature and not closing shop completely.

But then again I don't expect a whole lot of logic from Gamespot.

I like the open letter. A good description of basic fanboy attitudes.

Thank goodness fanboyism is kept to a minimum on the DP site although inevitably it comes through from time to time.

But then, we have these attitudes in all areas of life, most noticeable in politics. Sometimes I think politics is actually worse because fanboyism comes in the clothing of perfected and professionalized pseudo-reasoning (=euphemism) which makes it at first sight more difficult to recognize.

Intentionlal bias based on wishful thinking -- more often a curse than a blessing; like unintentional bias and subjectivity weren't obstacles high enough to keep your head straight and your feet on the ground.

"You're all experts in the fields of economics and finance, so your analyses will always prove correct."

That's my favorite part. That's why I so enjoy the threads about how the industry is going to crash, how Nintendo is falling apart, how Sony is falling apart, how Microsoft is falling apart, how new system X is not going to sell, how new system Y is going to sell like hotcakes, etc etc.

I sure as hell didn't! But I responded to the thread anyways. That's just the way I operate.

"You're all experts in the fields of economics and finance, so your analyses will always prove correct."

That's my favorite part.

I loved that part too, since there are certain members of this board that feel the need to contantly post sales figures and then disect them in 3000 word posts.

I also liked this one:

It makes perfect sense to insult a company's lineup one moment and at the same time hope that company will go third party and develop for your console the next.

Sgea. Heheh.

I like that letter, a lot. Damn but it hit home in a lot of ways.

One of the best things it does, is actually treat fanboys and anti-fanboys as the same thing. And to me, they are exactly the same thing.

Lots of people love to rag on fanboys, understandably, but the people who say they WON'T buy some game/system from a particular company no matter what are in my opinion just as bad as people who herald everything from their favorite company as golden.

Like the anti-Square people for example. "Everything by Square has been trash since they went 3D and always will be. It's shallow and icky and real RPG fans don't like Square. yadda yadda"

Hey, GameSpot is my FAVORITE site to go to for reviews. 99 percent of the time I agree with them. If anything, I think they can be a little HARSH sometimes on games.

But it's not like I read much there -- just the reviews and the Rumor Control section, which is great.

But yes, that letter sums up my feelings on fanboys exactly. :)

Some companies do it for the money, others do it... so, well, you can brag about them.

I used to be a fanboy. I would fight anybody who said SMS was better than NES. Of course, I was 9 and I got over it but it amazes me how many people never did.

Final Fantasy in 3d does suck though. Too bad Square wont switch to xbox before they go bankrupt.

Yeah, but i've never understood why though. Maybe it's because DP is more niche then places like gamefaqs, i don't really know for sure.

To be honest the gamefaqs forums are so popluted with fanboys that it's impossible to talk about anything on them. in one thread you get like three intelligent posts and 7678 pointless, unfounded, fanboy posts.

Here on DP we get alot more fair posts from intelligent people like myself, Goatdan, Joe himself, and thousands of other people. I'll even go as far as to say that there is a lot of thought and insight in a lot of the posts here.

In short thank you all for the lack of fanboy-ism.

"We decommission our long-running staff feature with this apocalyptic installment."

Pretty sound and explanatory to me.

I mentioned I would rather trust GameSpot reviews over IGN's on my own forum and they pretty much laughed in my face. I don't want to rant about IGN, though, but they really do suck and I would much rather use GS. It's the first place I go to to find out about a new game. And it's 99% of the time accurate that I will enjoy it, so why the fuck not go there? I don't get it really. It's a website with people talking about a game. I watch Ebert and Roeper for the same reason, to find out about a movie and see if I would like it. I don't care what the review says as long as I see stuff I will like.

To all the haters, get over it.

Glad I got that out. And I still don't understand what "Gamespotting" is.

Final Fantasy in 3d does suck though. Too bad Square wont switch to xbox before they go bankrupt.

Technically I said Square, not Final Fantasy. It makes a difference.

The only point I was trying to make is that just like people shouldn't have a narrow-minded view about companies they like, they also shouldn't write off every game by a company they don't like.

Square puts out a lot of RPGs, and they're all VERY different. So it's not quite fair to call every Square game from the last eight years "sucky" if someone has only played a couple of them.

Besides, most anti-Square people can't explain why Final Fantasy sucks now without using the word "fanboy" or "trendy" or "hype," even though those have absolutely nothing to do with the games themselves.

The point that's made horribly clear by this article and what you've just said is this: You're wasting your time. If people want to not enjoy Squares games, let them. Just because they're too closeminded to give them another shot after Game X pissed them off, so be it. You're still enjoying the games so what does it matter?

As for the article, no one who is one of those dumb bastards that can't muster up anything more than a "dude PS2 is st00pid, XBeast 4 lif3!1" will read that, and if they do, they will instant exclude themselves from the target audience.

Let them be ignorant, doesn't hurt me any.

Glad I got that out. And I still don't understand what "Gamespotting" is.

Before Gamespot implemented their “Journal” feature to the site, Gamespotting was a semi-blog feature for the editors. They would essentially write a small article about whatever game related topic was on their mind in a more “personal style”.

Great article. Nice way to end the feature.
