Until today I thought that the Turbografx 16 was an NTSC only system but it has come to my attention that there was actually a PAL version made.

Can someone shed any light on this?

There is no PAL TurboGrafx-16 system, but by using the Turbo Booster, the A/V outputs eliminate the issues you'd normally see using the NTSC system in a PAL-standard country.

So when you get the TG-16, get the Turbo Booster as well. I'm pretty sure there are no issues with the TurboDuo using the A/V connections, either, but it might be a good idea to get someone to confirm this.

I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but:

You're wrong DP! There WAS a PAL TG16 released. It was released in Spain only I believe, and it's unbelieveably hard to come by...harder than the PC Engine LT. IT was a very limited release item, but it DOES exist. It's one of those TG16 collectors items that most people don't even know exist...I've seen pics of them, but never seen one, and I know a couple people who had them. It was a Coregrafx (maybe a Coregrafx 2) of some kind that was release as a PAL system. I'll see if I can find the relevant data.

Hey I don't mind if I'm wrong! I like to LEARN :)

So is there a picture or website somewhere documenting this? All the years I've been collecting Turbo and never heard of it. I must have been napping when that info came about!

The biggest favor you could ever do yourself as a gamer is to buy a multi-format T.V.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1393372504 There's one that failed to sell on eBay a while back. I'll see if I can dredge up a web page that talks about it.

Check it out - the proof of the pudding :) However I wonder which hu-cards this one will play?

(already entered in database - check addendum tomorrow!)

I'd speculate that since it's CALLED TurboGrafx and not PC Engine that it will play TurboGrafx-16 HuCards. Again, just speculation. I hope you find one of these so you can give us some details.

It's even a different colour from the US one - seemingly a dark grey instead of black. Not much of a difference I know but a difference nonetheless :) All I need to get is some hu-cards!!!

So what, if anything, was the pack-in game? The box shows R-Type, but Asylum's picture has Blazing Lazers in the background.

I remember seeing that on ebay for a low price.

If anyone is interested in one of these let me know as I have a source where I can get them brand new mint! Price per unit will probably be around $120 plus shipping but I'm sure you will agree it is worth it :)

Let me know if any of you are interested!

The PAL and NTSC Turbo Grafx consoles are identical in appearance, yet both of them are nothing but Westernized PC Engines. The PC Engine is much smaller than the Turbo Grafx. (use the control pads for scale)

http://www.retro-games.co.uk/nec/pc-engine_core_mini.gif PC Engine (Core Grafx)

http://www.retro-games.co.uk/nec/tg16.gif Turbo Grafx

My question is why is the Turbo Grafx so much bigger if it's essentially nothing but a PC Engine? What's inside all of that excess casing?

lol nothing but air, which explains why the systems always feel as though a gust of wind could send them flying across the room. The only Turbo/PCE system that I've encountered that had a siginificant weighty feel is my Duo-R. Sturdy lil guy. I guess NEC thought that outside of japan , everyone believed bigger to be better.

I remember reading that it was due to the extra RF shielding needed to release the system in the US.

I've seen the gut of TG-16 and if NEC shortened the path on the PCB leading to controller port and to HuCard port, the TG-16 can still be as small as CoreGrafx. If I had a spare CoreGrafx case, I could alter the TG-16 board and make it all fit.

I still don't see any logic in wasted space other than increased cost and to make the system look bigger than competitor's consoles.
