Please help! Im trying to put together a website for the Sega Saturn, the second-best console for shooters next to the PC Engine. Im trying to compile a list of all the shooters for the Saturn, both import and domestic. Some shooters are easy to categorize. Others are not so clear-cut. I have purposely left out first-person shooters like DOOM as well as gun shooters like Virtua Cop.

Could you experts PLEASE look over the following lists and tell me what Im missing or if a game is in the wrong category? Im especially concerned with PURE shooters and 3-D shooters with LIMITED movement like Space Harrier.

Come on. Dont be lazy. Give it a look!

Impressive! I missed Twinbee at first, but then remembered that it's the Detana Twinbee Deluxe Pack. I don't personally know of anything you haven't got on your list. BUT, if you go to the Saturn section of the Xenocide files at shmups.com, there are a couple of differences between their list and your list- http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/index2.htm

In particular, I see "Arcade Gears: 3 Wonders" (horizontal scrolling) by Xing.

Also, is Super Dimensional Fortress Macross the same game as Macross: Do You Remeber Love? They get separate listings in the Xenocide files.

Excellent list. How about splitting the scrolling shooters into horizontal vs. vertical?

PS I don't see anything missing but I don't have a lot of Saturn imports.

Thanks for looking! The Macross game had me stumped for awhile, too. Its only one game, and its official title is

Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Do You Remember Love?

As far as Wonder 3 goes, it's on the list... it is listed under Chariot... the one game of the three on the disk that qualifies as a shooter.

Anyone else?

I thought Terra Cresta 3D was supposed to be a 3D shooter (hence the name).

Terra Cresta 3-D has polygonal graphics and environments but the game is played on a 2-D plane. you can move up, down, left, and right like a classic shooter. movement is restricted to 2 dimensions. other games like this include Radiant Silvergun, Layer Section 2, and Planet Joker.

great list!

here's one more for you (3D shooter):

G Vector (Soft Office, 1997)

You could conceivably throw Steamgear Mash (Tamsoft/Takara, 1995) into the quasi-shooter category. It's a isometric action title with a lot of shooting, like a cute version of the PSX game Project Overkill.

this is EXACTLY the kind of information i am looking for! I had no idea that the game G Vector even existed! i even found a scan of the box, so its been confirmed. thanks again!

ive also added Steamgear Mash to the quasi-shooters list, as well as the similar isometric shooters Prikura Daisakusen and Crusader: No Remorse

any more help?

(smacks self in forehead): how could i forget these:

krazy ivan (psygnosis/soft bank, 1996)- 3D mech shooter, and a so-so port of the psx game.
night striker s (ving, 1996)- sprite-based "3D" shooter- great arcade game, btw.
tukai slot shooting (bmg/shoeisha, 1996)- a "quasi" shooter, and a true oddity- it combines space invaders, tetris, and slots in a shooter/puzzle hybrid. definitely not a game for die-hard space shmuppers, but it's too much fun to ignore here...

ALSO, keio yugekitai (victor, 1996) HAS to get a mention- not only is it a sequel to the best sega cd shooter (keio flying squadron), it's a great platformer with some shooting stages in it... :D

THIS is what I'm talking about! Yet another shooter I knew nothing about... Night Striker S! I meant to include Keio... I don't know why I excluded it from the list.

By the way DP, I'm also working on splitting the list into horizontal and vertical shooters.

Is Krazy Ivan presented from a first or third-person perspective?

ANY MORE??? :o

like mechwarrior & the gun griffon games, krazy ivan is first-person. actually, it gets abit dodgy calling these games shooters, as they don't quite fit the "known", fanboy description of a shooter. if you want to include mech-based shooters from a first-person perspective, add dedalus (released in the u.s. as robotica).

also, if you have black dawn listed, then add thunderstrike 2, and solar eclipse as well...

this raises a good point... i'm specifically trying to keep out first-person shooters out of this particular list which would also include some of the mech games listed. im including third person shooters, but in their own section. my main concentration is on 2-d shooters (including those with 3-d polygonal graphics but 2-d gameplay) as well as 3-d games that limit a players movement like space harrior or afterburner.

any more?

Tempest

What about Machine Head? That was a 3-D Mech shooter.

like i said, "i'm specifically trying to keep out first-person shooters out of this particular list which would also include some of the mech games listed". this would exclude games like mechwarrior 2, gungriffon, and machine head. while are are certainly shooters, the inclusion of 1st person mech games would probably mean that other fps like doom, quake, powerslave, etc would need to be added. should all fps like doom, metal head, and the like be added to their own list? a first person shooter list versus a third-person shooter list? i know some racing games allow you to switch from first to third person. do any of the shooters listed allow for this change of perspective as well?

setting things sort of straight:

in saturn games like doom, quake, powerslave, congo, and duke nukem 3D you're controlling a guy running around with a gun.

in games like machine head (yah, i forgot that one), tunnel B1, robotica, gun griffon, mech warrior, ghen war, etc., you're controlling a vehicle piloted by a guy (or gal in some cases).

on one hand, they're all first-person shooters, but on the other hand, mech-based games should get their own category, but probably not on this list UNLESS you're going to separate them into that category apart from traditional 2D/3D arcade-style shooters.

THEN you have games like shellshock, which is a tank combat game simplified to a point that it's not a sim, and games like thunderstrike 2, soviet strike, and nuclear strike, which have just enough realism mixed with sim qualities to make them accessible to just about anyone.

another thing to consider is, in a "true" shooter, you're always in motion, fighting against the environment as well as the enemies. in action-based shooters, wheter they be 2D or 3D, (usually) you can stop and take a rest or plan out your next move/look at a map to see what's ahead...

the plot thickens... x_x

oh yeah, if vatlva is on the list, add eidos' crime wave, another vehicle-based shooter (not all that good, but...)

owww... my eyes are starting to bleed! @_@ im going to have to completely rework this list with all sorts of categories! damn. the main ones are still traditional hand-eye coordination shooters though.
