View Full Version : Trying to bring a dead Jaguar to life.

I have an Atari Jaguar that I can't seem to get to work.

The power light never comes on. I have a cart in the slot, (I understand that the Jag "needs" a cart in the slot to turn on). I've cleaned the cartridge slot very well.

I'm not sure what else to try. Was curious if anybody had a similar deal with a Jag and they got it to work?

Any tricks or anything I can try to get this thing to work?

You really don't give us anything to go on, other than the light doesn't come on. So the problem could be *anything*. Right now it could be a blown fuse, a bad switch, a faulty cartridge slot, bad regulator, burnt trace, bum processor, etc......

If you are serious about getting this to work open it, get a good multimeter and then see if power is being supplied. That is step one. When you open it up you may actually even see something wrong, like a burnt or broken component. But right now without anything else, these is nothing we can do to help you.

Assuming nothing odd has happened to it, it's probably the voltage regulator in the power input circuit. That's usually the thing that just makes a console dead. Can't remember if the Jaguar would have a 7805 or a 7812.

Ok, I have my Jag open, and I'm looking inside it. I don't notice anything in particular.

where do I get a good multimeter, and how much do they cost? I really don't want to spend any money on this, cause a working jag isn't worth much anyways.

I think I'm going to take the cartridge connector thing off, and try cleaning it again, and see what happens.

By the way, I know the AC Adapter works, because I tried it on my other jag and it's working fine. It's just with this jag, the red power light never comes on.

Dead Jaguar? Might be worth contacting these guys (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,15739502-13762,00.html)

Well, I cleaned the cartridge slot again and that didn't do anything. The little red light on the motherboard won't light up.

On the motherboard, to turn the jag on is this little white clicky thing. The red button on top of the jag that you push down to turn it on, pushes this thing down. That's how the jag turns on, and the red light comes on.

I thought maybe there was a problem with that thing, but it seems to be working fine.

Multimeters can be purchased at radio shack:

They range from ~$15 up to $200+ depending on use. For what you need I'd buy one with a digital display, and that should be around $25. Using this you can measure voltage and begin to trace the voltage.

And that "white clicky thing" is called a switch. If you didn't know that, maybe you shouldn't be messing with this after all.

I have this problem with a Jag I had on my shelf when I lived with my Mom(yrs ago)...It was bought new in the box and hardly used.

It was working fine..then one day I went to play it and nothing, the red light didn't turn on....I had a meter so I tested the Power Supply and it's fine..
Then I went nuts and bought a boxed Jag off Ebay/one of my first Ebay purchases using my In laws Web TV..
I tested the power supply on that jag and it's fine.

I cleaned the cart slot still nothing..the system is dead..I actually was messing with it a few months ago as I kept it to eventually repair or to use the mint shell.

I can't seem to find a Fuse in it..Where would it be located..?

It probably doesn't have a fuse. Is there a capacitor in the power circuit? That could be dead... though I suppose that wouldn't stop it from powering on, just from being reliable. I still say check the voltage regulators. Somewhere very near the power socket there should be a vertical, squarish, three pronged transistor (a Tip220 package, I think) that says either 7805 or 7812. That is the first place to start.
