View Full Version : do drugs enhance YOUR gameplay?

pragmatic insanester

the past few gta titles and the more recent narc have had gameplay alterations for your character after taking drugs. sometimes you get a trippy landscape, better aiming, or something else that enhances.
now, do any of you get better at gaming after a little dance with the smoke, bottle, or whatever kids do these days?

If I've had a couple of beers its easier for me to get into the gaming "zone", and my skills can improve significantly. However, any more then a few and my hand-eye coordination goes into the toilet.

PS - Yes, I'm 21, and I'm such a big dork I didn't even drink before my birthday. Also I've never tried any "drug" other then alcohol.

Drugs don't improve your game, they just dull your perception to the point that you "think" you're playing better. @_@ x_x :eek 2:

While I wouldn't say it improves any skills.. getting drunk with some friends and playing some Mario Party or Culdcept is insanely fun. Casual drinking and NES gaming is also a frequent activity we partake in. Now, many, many years ago, with a different set of friends, we'd smoke hella weed and play Tekken 2 until the sun came up (which meant it was time for bed). Again, not sure it enhanced any skills but it sure enhanced the amount of fun we had. No more herb though, just glorious beer.

I was thinking about making a thread like this for a long time but somehow I thought it might not be appropriate. From my own experience I can tell you the following (even if it means that I'm making a fool out of myself for admitting to take drugs):

Games in the Baldur's Gate style go great together with uppers. My skills aren't any better but I can focus on the game way harder and I sink really into the missions to slaughter all the enemies. Also puzzlers like Columns or Bust-A-Move are fine to sink in when on uppers.

I've tried to play Final Fantasy X on mushrooms but I didn't like it. I expected to be sucked in by the story but it was just anoying. Maybe I should have tried it with a game that is more interesting, something like Final Fantasy VI. Maybe I'll give it another try with another hallucinogen drug.

Besides that, kids don't do drugs, it's dangerous. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about.

For me, the idea of trying to game in an altered state is counterproductive. Gaming is a drug, and when I really get keyed into a long session with one particular game it enhances me into a hyperaware state - thinking many moves ahead in microseconds, being aware of things on screen that I'm not even looking at directly, making multiple complex decisions with a plethora of control buttons, et cetera. Halo 2, Lumines, Mr. Driller, Final Fantasy VII, the list goes on and on. And like most "drugs" that people take, they are certainly addictive, to the point I need to be torn away from them by my loving wife or close friends. Now why would I mess up that high by getting high on something else? They'd clash. I'm no straightedger, it's just that for me gaming is ALREADY a rush. The only thing I'll even consider is maybe a cold beer to relax my mood, but I do mean ONE. Even that is taking a risk of slowing down my reaction time, but since I have a high tolerance (6 foot 223 plus a drinking history from college I'm not proud of) it generally doesn't make a difference. More than that and you know what alcohol does - makes it hard to concentrate, you spontaneously make bad choices, your vision is impaied and your motor reflexes go to pot. That doesn't "enhance" game play for me at all.

This is the best thread in long time. I highly suggest playing California Games (SNES) on coke. Also if you are on speed, I gurantee that your 1943 scores will drastically improve. Also, I know that mescaline is difficult to score unless you are from California, but I also highly recommend playing any highly colorful game like Mario Kart 64, Bubble Bobble/ Rainbow Islands, or Yoshi's Story once you are high on the horse pill.

PS. I do not advise playing a game like Grand Theft Auto or Loaded when you are coming down from X or coke as it will double your depressive state.

Have fun, children!

Hallucinogens plus gaming... is usually a bad idea.

The cat played many of current gen games on Psilo and most were ended in pondering questions like why does he use guns .... why.. why... to many whys. 8 bits games are taming another horse all together and can be great fun however... it really depends on how your cat handles his shit. He also said unless its a very fast paced game uppers will lead your mind astray.

Drugs are stupid, they make me stupid, which is why I don't use them.

However, back in 1999, I did play some Sonic Adventure after I had smoked pot, and I sucked at it. In fact, I think that was the last time I ever did any illegal drugs.

I don't see a difference between taking coke and playing California Games (or Baldur's Gate in my case) and taking coke and then going out clubbing or whatever else. It's a hard drug and if you get addicted to it then you sure have issues. But what you do when high is not really an indicator if or what kind of issues you have if you aks me.

But besides that: the pushy feeling of coke fits well with action games and fast button pushing. Same for Speed. I wouldn't take E and stay at home, this is a party drug for me.

Oh and besides that: As I have said in my first post, durgs are dangerous for your health. Even if they can be fun, you will have to pay the price for taking them when you are not carefull (and I don't mean money).

Me and my roomies used to get high as kites back in college and then play all sorts of stuff. We generally sucked, but we'd all have occasion moments of supreme greatness that we normally wouldn't have had otherwise. We played SNES, Genny, PSone, NES, 32x... whatever we could get our hands on, really. We spent a great deal of time with the Super Game Boy. I was called in for those rare times when go one else could get past a level. I'd usually get through it, and I was generally stoned off my ass.

Those were the days, man. A bong, a TV, a SNES, and a big bag of chips. A big brick of cheese didn't hurt, either.

Since caffeine is not considered a "drug", it has been used by me to enhance gameplay.

Prescription anti-anxiety meds help lower my blood pressure when playing games like Robotron that get me too intense.

If it is a compound that changes your perseption of the world around you then it's a drug. No more headache? You probably took a drug. Anti-Anxiety meds are considered to be as bad as alcohol with addiction. caffeine is most certainly a drug, it's a stimulant. Sugar is a drug as well.

These days its just a couple of beers while I drive . . . a 60 foot tall Vertical Tank! Bristling with cannons! Grenade launchers! Howitzer weaponry!

WOW. Somebody mentioned taking "Shrooms" and playing video games.

That doesn't seem like a good combo at all. I remember doing shrooms on occasion during my college years, and the main thing that I remembered from that, is that when I was on the "Shrooms", I didn't want to be around anything electronical.

I didn't want to be in a car, or around TV's or anything like that. I wanted to be out in Nature. Like Camping or something like that. Now, of course music is incredible enhanced when on "Shrooms", so shrooms and concerts go hand in hand. But I could never imagine playing a video game on shrooms.

By the way, shrooms are very dangerous, and I don't recommend them for anybody. This was a long, long, long time ago when I tried them.

Oh, I forgot to mention.

The hippie lettuce and games are a match made in Heaven.

I can remember back in the days when I was one of the best Madden players in Northern California. (around 1992/1993).

I smoked trees like crazy back then, and I would play Madden all day long, and let me tell you, the weed helped me.

The weed would make me more focused. Make me stronger. (Episode 3 quote)

No seriously, the dank would allow me to get really focused and dialed in for each play of the game. Before competing in tournaments I would be in the parking lot smoking a big fattie.

The key was not to get "over high". You want to make sure that you are indeed high, and not just a teaser high, but indeed high, but you have to make sure that you don't get "over high" or you would get killed in the first round of the tourney. I made that mistake before.

Sometimes, I wish I could still smoke trees to this day. But I had to stop. But the thing is, that when you are high on the dank, the games are just better. It might be wrong, and it might not be polically correct, yada yada yada....

But the games just are better. The experience is just better. Same thing with movies and concerts and things like that. Again, just make sure that you aren't overhigh, or you will ruin the whole experience.

......runs off to hit the hippie lettuce and play Outrun 2 on XBOX on a 113inch screen!!

I like to play rpg's and platform games when i'm smoking weed. I don't think it makes me much better at the games but I enjoy them quite a bit more . If i'm by myself I usually do better because i'm concentrating only on the game, though if I have friends around i usually get distracted. Chrono Trigger,Super Metroid and Secret of Mana are all great games to play when you're high.
As far as other drugs i've only done coke a couple times but it made me much better at space shooters which i'm already good at. I believe I got 250,000 in namco museum galaga. I also completed Astro Warrior for sms which is otherwise pretty hard.
Alcohol on the other hand makes me worse at just about every game, totally messes up my hand-eye coordination.

I used to do quite a bit of hallucinogens and would play a lot of SNES/Genesis and it made them more fun (it even made Sega CD games crappy FMV look good).

I don't do that stuff any more though... just stick with beer, which is good for games like GTA, but horrible for games where you need fast reactions like Halo (though I still try).

I played party crash on Burnout 3 last weekend after coming home from the bars and it was pretty fun, and I actually did pretty well, though it sounded like every one else was drunk as well...

I've never even smoked a cigarette in my entire life, let alone done any illegal drugs. I got far better things to waste my money on. (And no, it's not 'cause I'm some tight ass nor was I strictly raised or influenced; I've just always had zero interest in trying that stuff.)

I have a bit of alcohol from time to time, but never enough to get drunk, or even tipsy. I only drink alcohol because I like how some drinks taste, and generally, the less I can notice the alcohol in it, the better. I can't stand the taste of beer.

However, when I was little kid, Duck Hunt was THE game to play when staying up all night with a bunch of kids. Feeling stoned from lack of sleep always seemed to improve the game. O_o

Drinking and using drugs has never been anything I am interested in. I haven't ever been high or drunk before and I don't ever plan on it, either. The guy who mentioned getting the perfect amount and not overkilled or teased was true on. Well I gotta just say this, there are times when a drug enhances certain attributes and other times it can hinder the same attributes. Isn't it about knowing, and choosing responsively how and when? Sometimes it do, sometimes it don't.
