View Full Version : What's The Greatest Gaming System You've Never Owned?

There's a lot of great systems out there but, with the exception of a few, most of us haven't owned them all. So, what's the best system you never owned...not even for a day? For me, it's probably the Neo Geo but I could never afford that...so if I discounted that it would be either the Intellivision or the Vectrex. I'm sure the Intellivision was cool but the Vectrex was beyond cool...I wish I'd owned it...but I never have.

whoops! it was greatest system youve NEVER owned.

i would have to go with the turbografx-16, as i have owned all the other major ones since 1990. i hear it has some good shooters, and i like castlevania...

Sega Genesis. I know I could pick one up fpr less than $20, but I never really made a commitment to do so.

Probably turbo graphix, but I'm not sure if there's anything on the system I'd really want that badly. I would like a neo geo system too, but the games are way too expensive.

3DO. How could anyone not want to play Gex. I loved the 3DO when my friend showed it to me.

It's a tie between the Snes & the PS1.

Easily the Dreamcast for me. There are SO many underrated games for that system, I wish I had one. I've just been too lazy or cheap to get one and a decent library.

But seriously, the Dreamcast rocks.

TurboGraphix 16

I lusted over this sytem whenit came out. I used to stare at it through the glass at Toys r Us, wishing I could have it. Through the years it stayed in the back of my mind, taunting me. I've never seen one in the wild. I found some games one day, but no system. Eventually my desire turned to the Turbo Xpress. It fit in better with my handheld obsession, but it was still a TurboGraphix. One day I'll get one, I'm just not sure when it'll be.

Perhaps I should've asked people to say why they never got that system. For me, I now hesitate to get a Vectrex as I'm afraid the screen might go bad and I'll not have any clue how to get it fixed. For the Intellivision, I never like the controllers. And, as I said before, the Neo Geo was just too darn expensive...expecially where the games are concerned.

Atari 2600 my Grandma had one and i played it all the time as a kid. I loved that thing I'm not sure why i've never got one. I guess most of the thrift stores i fequent haven't seemed to turn any up yet but I'll grab one as soon as they do. I actually have a list of systems i'd like to get that i've never owened and it goes a little something like this.

Atari Jaguar
Neo Geo
Sega CD
32X
Turbo Duo or CD add on
Super Grafx

Other than those I've already gotten every major system I've ever wanted.

I would have to say Neo Geo, I've always wantedto get one. The system is just to expensive plus the games are sick in price aswel. The price is why I have never owned one.

Turbo Grafix 16 or the Neo Geo. The Neo Geo was always way too expensive for my parents. One of my friends used to have a Turbo Grafix 16 and I loved it but my parents thought my NES and SNES were enough, system-wise.

My first was an Atari 5200, so I never owned a 2600. There's some cool games for it but I don't ever see myself getting one. Pressure Cooker was released on the GBA so all is well in my world!

Probabley Playstation 1. I have a PS2, but don't own a single PS1 game or anything, so I think that qualifies. I was out of gaming for most of the PS1 years, and was a Nintendo guy anyways, so when I would play, I was playing N64. I have owned all of the other great/popular systems from the NES-current.

Another one I always wish I had was the Turbografx-16.

When it came out, my parents wouldn't let me get one. I was operating on a two dollar per week allowance, and I said I was going to save up for it myself then. My mother told me, "By the time you save up enough money, there'll be some new thing you want instead." I guess she was right, because I never got one. Of course, it's hard to save up that much money.

And now look at the prices on TG-16 stuff. It's nuts. Which makes me even MORE sorry that I didn't get one back then. And currently building a respectible TG-16 library is out of my budget. I just collect for what I already have.

One day though, just maybe I'll get one. If they're even able to be found by then.

Or perhaps that Japanese free emulator will make some strides in the near future.

Neo-Geo, but like you, i would never be able to afford such libraries as i have for my other cherished systems, so my other choice is definately the Sega Saturn. its a cool system with lots of games id like to play (even now), i never got one then cause after the SCD and 32X everyone pretty much abandoned hope in the Saturn, and it wasnt hyped enough, so my friends and i stayed with our SNES and waited for the Playstation.

i really really want to get one now. itll have to be mint and complete of course, im kinda dettered by the high prices of the games and hardware i want for it (pro action replay and the WD games) so unless i get a great deal ill hold off till i can complete my Genesis, SCD, PSX, and SNES collections. (my 'collections' consist of games i like and would enjoy playing, i dont buy every damn game available.)

3DO. How could anyone not want to play Gex. I loved the 3DO when my friend showed it to me.

you know theres a perfect version of the original Gex for the Playstation (not the abismal 'Enter the Gecko' sequel). it can be found in longbox and regular variations. it truly is an excellent game, one of the best side scrollers of that time period.

The systems I want are the ones I dont have, Sega CD, 32X, Jaguar, Saturn, 3DO,CD-i, Gamegear, Lynx, Neo-Geo Pocket, virtual boy. If I could only pick one though it would be a saturn.

I never had a NEO GEO but I have games for it.

The other top system I never had was a PC Engine (I have 2 Turbo Duos)

I will buy a NEO GEO one of these days.

I have just about every other top system.

I would say its a toss up between the Neo Geo and the Master System. Both were systems that at time of release I could neither afford nor care about. By the time I realized how much I should care, both were long gone and not to be found localy (years before I know of a "internet").

Neo Geo AES, PCENGINE and all its variations, PSP, and Nintendo DS.

I haven't bought the handhelds cause i'm poor.

I never got into PC Engine stuff cause it was a bit confusing, a lot of people I talked to gave me very different answers when concerning "the way to go" with that stufff. I do own a TG 16 though.

I don't own an AES because the Carts are way overpriced. Sorry Neo freaks, but $400 for a Street Fighter 2 variant is not the way for me to go! I did own a Neo Geo CDZ but sold it because there are super reliable emulators for Neo Geo and PC Engine/TG 16. Perfect Emulation? You fucking bet! At least stacked up to the stuff I owned.

For me it's these systems:

32X
3DO
Colecovision
Intellivision

which probably have a couple of good games. Other than those, I've got pretty much each and every important console :)

Sega Genesis which im getting soon from a friend hopefully

or the neo geo which i can't afford

It would have to be the Neo Geo. I can't bring myself to shell out $400 for a console and $70+ per game, not just because of the price (after all I'm stupid enough to spend $250 on an NES Hot Slots trying to complete my collection) but because no matter what people say it's still basically souped up SNES technology, and comparitively speaking you can get an SNES for $20 or less and great games in that same range - hell 95% of SNES games I own I didn't spend more than $5 on tops. So Neo Geo is probably the great system I will never own, because I admit it's great at what it does, but I can play it in emulation on a MAME cab anyway so I don't feel like I'm losing much, not to mention the Metal Slug games all get ported to the other modern consoles anyway.

Funny you should ask this question - I've actually recently been working on filling in the gaps in my collection of classics 70s/early 80s consoles. Thus far, I've gotten a Channel F, an RCA Studio II, and a nice, complete boxed Arcadia 2001; this leaves the Astrocade and the Vectrex, and the latter should be hitting my doorstep any day now (and a boxed one no less!). I also recently snatched up a PS2, which I've enjoyed tremendously, and another console, about which more in its own brag post when it arrives from the other side of the world. ;)

I'll get an Astrocade eventually, though I'd say with my recent console acquisitions I should be pretty busy for a few months just playing it all. There'll still be an Astrocade out there with my name on it. :D But it's been nice to close in on "the forgotten five," those machines I never owned but always wondered so much about. I'm really looking forward to the Vectrex. And the mystery console.

Beyond that...I have one 16-bit machine, and it's entertaining enough, but I really don't have any ambitions for any hardware newer than that at the moment. Besides, I have to slow down soon so I can rearrange my shelves to make room for all this stuff!

End of minor brag - everybody probably thinks I'm a total bastard now. LOL

Turbo Duo, Xbox, and Neo-geo. Neo geo is too expensive, so I'll probably never actually own one. :( Turbo duo I'm still hoping I'll find cheap at a garage sale like I did with my turbografx-16. And Xbox I'll just pick up when it hits $99 or less. :D

This is an easy one. I really want to at least play and eventually own an Adventurevision. I'm sure the games are a bit on the bad side, but the technology looks really cool and the fact that it's so rare makes it that much more appealing to me.

None. If there's a system I want badly I'm gonna get anyway.

It worked out with the Neo Geo and the Turbograf-16, considering that I'm a student its nothing special.

Of course its a matter of how much one is willing to pay for his hobby.

My Neo Geo makes about 1/3 of my collections value.

Wow, this is a very difficult question for me to answer. At one time or another I've owned just about everything that I have ever had a desire to own in terms of game systems.

The first thing that comes to mind is the Neo-Geo CD sytem. I actually owned a regular Neo Geo for a few months, so I'm not sure if the Neo Geo CD really counts, since it's just a CD based version.

Of course there is the PSP. I've never owned a PSP, and I would like to get one very bad. But that is a portbable system, and it isn't a retro system, so I'm not sure that counts in this discussion.

I've never owned a Philips CD-I, and I kinda have a morbid curiosity about that one. I also have an interest in both the FM Towns Marty and the SuperGrafx, but I'm not sure either system has enough games to make it worth it to get either one of them.

When I was a little kid, I had seen a few commercials for Intellivision and Colecovision, and I'm sure at the time I would have wanted one of those, but I actually don't have much interest in them now.

Here is how I would have to rank them:

1. Sony PSP - not sure if this counts for this discussion since it's a portable, and it's a new system.

2. Neo-Geo CD - not sure if this counts, because I had a Neo-Geo and this is basically the same thing with just a different kind of media.

3. Nintendo DS - see above under Sony PSP.

4. FM Towns Marty - I do have a strange interest in this sytem, but I know that there really aren't that many games for it that are that great, and the ones that are cost a fortune.

5. Philips CD-I - I know this thing is more of a interactive CD player than a games machine, but I still have a curiosity towards it.

6. SuperGrafx - I probably won't ever have one of these, they are expensive, and not enough games for it to make it worth it.

7. Atari Jaguar CD unit - not sure if this really counts, since it's just a add on peripheral, but I've never had a Jag CD player, and I would like to play the sequel to Cybermorph. Although I've heard that's the only good game for it.

8. Sega Nomad - Not sure if this would count, it's portable, and it's just a Genesis, but I've never had one.

9. Wondermega - I've got a Genesis and Sega CD, but I've never had a wondermega.

10. Sega CDX - again, I've never had this, not sure if it really qualifies.

11. Neo Geo Pocket Color - Never had one, not sure if portables count.

12. Game Boy Color - Never had one, not sure if portables count.

Probably the Neo Geo, but at those prices I won't be getting one any time soon. My biggest hole is that I don't have a Jaguar, unless you count the one in my trash that caught fire when I plugged it in. I'll get another some day.

I liked Anthony1's countdown, so here's my top 5 in reverse order.

5 - Sega CDX: This bad boy came out after I got %#$@&! over with the sega cd. I didn't buy another video game until the last years of the PS1 (just after Metal Gear Solid came out). It mixes all that sega hardware into one tiny unit. I need to get my hands on one.

4 - Turbographx-16: My cousins had one of these back in the day. I was a diehard Genesis supporter throughout the Genny Turbo wars so I never gave it much thought, but in retrospect it had some badass games for it.

3 - Saturn - I've collected all the sega systems since the Master System. This is the one generation I skipped entirely. I really don't even know that much about it. The sega cd/32x debacle left me a broken man when it came to video games. I hear nothing but good things about it though. I should really pick one up.

2 - SNES - Brother had one. Million great games. Never picked one up myself. Need to remedy.

1- NES - Played it on countless occasions. Every person I knew growing up had one. I stayed loyal to my Master System. I now own over 40 NES games and I still don't have anything to play them on. And what's even sadder is I may hold off on buying a refurbished one since the Messiah NEX is coming out in the next few months. Commence with the throwing of spoiled produce.

no matter what people say it's still basically souped up SNES technology

Uh... no. Have you ever played a SNES Neo Geo port? While some are playable and enjoyable enough, they're absolutely pathetic in comparison to the real deal. When they said "The future is now", they really meant it. They were using advanced arcade technology that was far above and beyond anything at the time. The prices weren't so high just because they wanted to milk the consumers for all they were worth; they were high because that technology really DID cost that much. It took GENERATIONS for anything else to catch up. Not until the Dreamcast could any other home console attempt to do a competent and fairly accurate port.

That rant aside, I'm fortunate in that I have a consolized MVS. It's no AES, but it's basically the same thing and is every bit as good to me (if not better). Right now, the PC Engine Duo is at the top of the list for me since I already own Rondo of Blood. However, I already have my foot in the door on that system, so I wouldn't really count it. What I really should get is a Saturn. I know that once I get one and import a few titles, I'll be loving it and wondering how I ever lived without it, but right now, I'm broke, lazy, and I just have too much on my plate as far as collecting games I want for other consoles goes. Sooner or later, though, I'll get my own (for now I can always borrow my bro-in-law's Saturn, hehe).

Easy one for me the NEO-GEO I remember having dreams about this system when I was a kid :embarrassed: sure I had my beloved SNES but the ports to Snes while competent enough just wasnt the same.

There are two systems that I did have that I trade or sold I miss sooo freakin much and those two are the turbo-graphix-16 ninja spirit mmmm and Sega Saturn Streetfighter Alpha 2 on SS how I miss the :(

The Neo-Geo for me. The bad thing is, I'll probably never own one because I wouldn't want to pay for it. I've played it several times at various swap-meets and friends houses and such, and I was always amazed at what it could do.

The reason I started collecting is to get all the stuff I never had as a kid.

Why i got a genesis, a segacd, a saturn.

TG-16 is one of those systems I wanted as a kid, but I simply don't see enough games on it that I want ot justify the purchase.

Panasonic 3DO FZ1. I saw one in my local pawn shop, it was complete with no games for $59 but, I don't know if that's a good price.

I would say that that's a pretty good price. That is around the price that I got mine for. It's a really good system too. It's one of the better models of the system. For me the systems I would have to pick would be the Bandai Atmark (Pippin), NEC PC-FX, Fujitsu FM Towns, Sharp X68ooo, Neo Geo, Nuon, Msx. There more of the harder to find systems, and they can get a bit pricey. Eventually I will have them. :D

A few I can think of off hand...

SuperGrafx - High price tag and limited amount of games put me off although I'll finally have one in the coming weeks. :-P

FM Towns Marty - I've heard mixed opinions on the games/prices but I'm really interested in it. I'll have to try and track down a console sometime for myself.

MSX/2 - More of a computer I'd say but somewhere along the same lines as the FM Towns Marty.

TurboDuo - I just love how sleek this system is and I'd love to own one sometime, but I'm quite sure my console space is all filled up. :(
