I think Gradius is one of the best horizontal scrolling SHMUPS ever. If it hadn't been around, there would not be other franchises like R-Type. If you want to chat about Gradius, Salamander (Lifeforce), or Parodius, post here.

I'd like to try the rather weird Forever With Me Parodius on the PS and compare it to the SNES outings.

I think it's the exact same game

The only one I have ever played was for the SNES (Gradius III maybe?). It was a fairly good game from what I can recall, with all the different ways to upgrade your ship and all.

I'm just happy that Konami continues to make the Gradius games. SHMUPS have become a niche market and I hope that Konami continues to feed our needs for new Gradius games. I'm also glad that (so far fingers crossed) Konami hasn't tried to make a 3D Gradius ala KOF, SF and Metal Slug fate. Some games just need to stay true to their roots.

oh yeah back on topic I've played Gradius before... great games i hope they keep coming.

Never liked it in any incarnation. For the last time SHMUP designers, DO NOT TAKE AWAY all of my weapons when I die, including my comfortable speed. That's not freakin' fair.

that's not totally true your "options" float around for you to pick up again in some Gradius's

Luckily, Konami developed Scramble and Super Cobra years before Gradius. Otherwise, the entire Gradius series might not have ever been created.

AND we might not have fried Snickers bars today.

Gradius and R-Type have been two of my favourite games since the NES and SMS. The PlayStation 2 outings of both games still keep most of the original gameplay intact yet still rock pretty damn hard (Although I havn't played Gradius V yet...). If you have a GBA also try to pick up Gradius Galaxies, it's the friggin wickeds!

Whuzzat? Gradius? Is that some sort of new fangled luncheon meat or something?

Gradius, it's whats for dinner. No, thats beef.

Yes, I've played Gradius. Not knocking the ?, But a poll of registered users would probably yield 80 % or more at least played it and its predecessors as well as followers.

Gradius is good stuff. One of my favorite shooters. III is my favorite, the first one is good too. The ps2 one is nice to look at but they make you fight way too many bosses in a row(kind of like that ps2 contra game which i hated).
I've actually never played lifeforce. I've always heard it was good, just never found a copy.

Who here hasn't played Gradius (or some form of it)?

All 3 versions of Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius: Forever with Me are different. The PSX and Saturn versions are close, but the PSX has more features (The kick-ass Accident Stages). Both do have a hidden code to hear Mami Kingetsu's lyrical version of the Tokimeki Memorial theme song on Stage 2, plus a pair of secret characters.

Hmm, thanks for the info. Do they all have the irritating [yet somehow tolerable] commentators talking the same quotes?

Yeah, in fact I played it tonight, on my PSP. 8-) Shooters such as Gradius are like fine wine - they get better with age.

My favorite Gradius in order.

Gradius II Gofer>Gradius Gaiden>Gradius 5>Gradius

Sorry can't say much for IIIorIV, i haven't put the time into them much.

Note: for any one who's never tried Gradius II Gofer.I suggest picking up, Gradius Deluxe pack for the Saturn or PS1 or the stand... alone release for the PCE.

Gradius = greatest shmup series ever made. And yes, I'm including the Salamander and Parodius series.

That reminds me, I've been meaning to fire up Gradius III recently.

That reminds me, I've always been a bit foggy regarding the whole Pariodus and Twinbee lines since I don't do imports. Below are a list of assumptions I've been working off of. Please let me know if any of the statements below are incorrect.

1) Pariodus and Twinbee are different series.
2) No Pariodus game has ever been ported to the US.
3) Only the original Twinbee was ported to NES as Stinger.
4) Neither Pariodus or Twinbee has any relation to Fantasy Zone.

Sorry for dragging in other series but since they all seem kind of similar, I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't any connection there.

You are correct on all of the above.

Here are some Yu-Gi-Oh cards releated to Gradius and Parodius. I doubt very many YGO players know where Koitsu and Aitsu are from:

Stinger is actually Moero Twinbee, which was basically Twinbee 2. Otherwise, you're right.

I love the Parodius games. The music and artwork cracks me up. Nothing beats shooting penguins while more penguins DJ, while playing "that's the way [uh huh, uh huh] i like it."
